  • All the features I loved in the old one, with all the improvements I wanted.
Style: 40V Cordless Mower Kit
I had an earlier model of this mower, which is why I purchased this one. After years of continuous use, it finally got to be time to replace. And I'm glad I did. The new one is lighter and easier to handle, but seems no less powerful, easily handling my lawn. Height adjustment is by a lever in easy reach and the height of the handlebar is also easy and precise to adjust. Not sure about the proprietary battery, but it seems to have lots of power, and on-board storage for the spare is a great idea. Also, there's now a "power remaining" indicator, which the old mover lacked. I've used it once, and already I love it. Edit: The battery life is not as great as in the older model. Fortunately, they included an extra battery which more than enough for my modest surburban lawn. I notice that Amazon offers third-party batteries for this unit, which have a higher Amp-hour rating; I intent to get at least one of those just to be sure. Being a photographer, I'm well aware that many battery manufacturers offer high-guality replacement batteries for cameras, so I'm pretty confident in such batteries. If you have a large lawn, I would suggest getting one or more additional batteries to be sure you always have enough. ... show more

  • Light weight - great power - two batteries - one charger
Style: 40V Cordless Mower Kit
This mower exceeded my expectations for power and performance. I previously had a Worx mower that was over 8 years old with the large battery. it was heavy but got the job done until battery finally failed and no replacement. This B&D mower was a great replacement for my Worx. I took a hard look at another Worx, but their price to mower size just didn;t compare to this one on Amazon. The large blade and mower deck gets the job done. The single lever with multi height adjustment is awesome for getting the perfect mow height. A few quirks to mention, but I would still say this is a great mower. 1. The plastic wheels squeak a little when I mow and turn. A little lubricant might solve that haven't tried yet. 2. It only comes with a single charger and two batteries, so if you deplete both batteries, you have to charge one, then swap and charge the other. if you forget to swap you are short a battery for next mow. 3. Only one battery is active at a time. Not a big deal, but it isn't that obvious from the pictures. The rear battery compartment is storage only, and you swap the front battery out when it is depleted and move the spare to the actual battery port on front. (This is good for me, as I currently get whole yard done on single battery. since it isn't drawing from both batteries, I only need to charge one when done with mow) ... show more

  • Good buy for the money
Style: 40V Cordless Mower Kit
>-- Summary --< pros + Got my whole yard (about 9000 sq ft, just under 1/4 acre) even after being overgrown + Very quiet, makes about as much noise as a high powered indoor fan + Extremely light, almost felt like a toy when I was using it. + Easily adjustable handlebar, you can get it in the perfect spot so pushing it is effortless + Folds and stores to take up very little space when not in use. cons + A lot of plastic parts, including the wheels, doesn't feel super durable (but should be good as long as not abused) + Required a battery change to get the whole lawn (comes with 2) + Comes with 2 batteries but only one charger (an inconvenience) I bought this after having owned the previous model of this lawn mower for about 5 or 6 years. The previous model had a 36v sealed lead acid battery, and it worked perfectly for those 5 or 6 years. Batteries do wear over time, and since the previous battery was expensive to buy when I needed a replacement, I decided to spend a little more and try this "entry level" cordless lawn mower. I just finished mowing my yard (about 9000 sq ft), which I had let go for about 2 weeks. A little overgrown, but not horribly so. I was able to get the entire yard in one go, although it did require using both batteries (there is a storage slot for a second battery in the mower). It was a very effortless job. The mower itself has handlebars that are easily adjustable so you can get it at the perfect ergonomic height, and it is so light weight (even lighter than my previous cordless mower) that I basically felt like I was going for a walk instead of doing yardwork. All in all, I have to say that for the money, this is an impressively built yard tool, and B&D made the right design decisions to keep it affordable. There are improvements I would like to see, hence only the four out of 5 stars, but these are more annoyances than anything. I feel like this purchase is absolutely worth the value. 1 - It would be nice if it came with 2 chargers, since it uses two batteries. I tend to recharge after use so I don't have to think about it, and with only the one charger I have to charge over 2 nights and remember to switch the batteries. 2 - It would be nice if the storage slot for the second battery was another power source. They could either link them together, or put in a switch to go between one or the other, but it would save me the 30 seconds it took to change the battery (again, ultimately an inconvenience). 3 - It would be nice if B&D sold a multi-battery fast charger (3-4 batteries). The fast chargers they sell still take about 2 hours to charge the battery. A multi-battery fast charger would make it easy to go "all in" on the cordless suite of yard tools (edger \ line trimmer \ hedge trimmer \ chain saw) for one of those extended yard work days. 4 - It would be nice if B&D sold higher amperage batteries. The batteries are 2 amp batteries, a 4 amp battery probably would have gotten the whole yard. There are 3rd party sellers who seller higher amp batteries, I may invest in one eventually. Any of the improvements I had listed I could have overcome by buying another brand of lawnmower, but the brand I know of that has all those improvements is twice as expensive. Again, these are inconveniences, the important thing is that my lawn was mowed in one go, it was pretty effortless, and the noise was so low I could easily hear my headphones while mowing. ... show more

  • Batteries make this nearly useless
Style: 40V Cordless Mower Kit
Needing a new lawn mower at the start of COVID, I didn't want to shop in person, so purchased this. The mower itself is lightweight (not surprising, since it's mostly plastic) and maneuverable. Granted it has been over 2 years since I assembled it, but my recollection is that it was straightforward to put together. Unfortunately, a major problem - and what brings my overall rating of this mower to just 1 star - is that the batteries don't last long enough to do the job. My home sits on a quarter-acre lot with a house, shed, driveway, several trees and a garden. If the grass wasn't overgrown, I could mow the yard in 45 minutes with my old corded mower. The description of this mower stated that just one of the two included batteries would last the amount of time I needed to complete cutting my yard's grass. Unfortunately, this was never the case. The original two batteries combined have never lasted the 45 minutes that were promised for one battery. On top of that, only one charger was included, so only a single "round" of mowing could be done at a time. With a charging time of several hours, I often had to wait until the next day to resume mowing. After a couple months of frustration with the above situation I purchased new batteries and a second charger. When I made the purchase, I stuck with Black & Decker batteries. I verified that the voltage, amps, etc. were the same. The batteries also looked identical in the pictures I could see. Unfortunately, when the batteries arrived they were obviously not right for my mower, as the connectors were wrong. Last year I purchased another replacement battery and charger. This battery was stated to have twice the capacity (amp-hours) as the originals. Unfortunately, it also fails to last anywhere close to the 45 minutes (let alone the 90 minutes one would expect) I need to get the job done. At least I can get in two "rounds" of mowing now. Another frustration is that if the grass is overgrown and thick, the mower stalls quite easily. With the battery situation being what it is, this often happens as I need several days to mow my yard. The method I've adopted when dealing with this is to "pop a wheelie" with the mower: Where there is a small patch like this I will just lower the mower onto the patch. Where there is an extended stretch of such grass I mow over it multiple times in order to get it to the desired height. This can extend the time needed to cut the grass quite a lot. When I was younger it seemed that Black & Decker had a pretty good reputation. Unfortunately, this experience, a few others, and some things I've seen & heard from other sources, leads me to conclude that they no longer deserve that reputation. I certainly won't be buying any more of their battery operated tools in the future. Update: At only three years old the starting mechanism failed. I tried to fix it myself, but found that beyond my skill. With the problems mentioned above, I wasn't willing to put more money into having it repaired and bought a replacement from another manufacturer. ... show more

  • Impressed with this mower after 2 years
Style: 40V Cordless Mower Kit
I've had this mower for two years. In that time I have added 2 more batteries to my line-up as I have the matching trimmer, leaf blower, and hedge trimmer. I mow once a week, my front lawn take 1.5 batteries, the second battery is also used to trim and blow the clippings. The mower is nearly silent, just a low hum, I can have a conversation with someone while the mower is on. The adjustable deck is great, easy to operate with one hand, very light weight and gets very close to the edges of my garden boarders. The back lawn is over 0.5 acres, but this thing will get through it with the 4 total batteries I have. If you think that the battery this came with is all you'll need, you will be sorely mistaken. Just like any battery powered machine, the battery does get used, and needs to be recharged. I also highly recommend buying a second charger, for the batteries. Lithium Ion batteries are made to either be discharging, by use, or charging. If left out of either of these states, the battery will slowly discharge and if it ever gets to a 0% charge the battery will fail and no longer hold a "good" charge. Best mower I have had in a long time. ... show more

  • A nice, light, cordless mower for a small yard
Style: 40V Cordless Mower Kit
I chose this cordless mower because I had invested in 40V batteries for B&D leaf blower/vacuum and string trimmer. I use it in mulching mode and it does an excellent job of creating a clean, even cut and does not leave wheel ruts like my previous, heavier gas engine mower. It takes at least three, 3.5AH batteries to mow my yard. The two 2 AH batteries that come with the mover are essentially useless for mowing because of their short runtime. And the slow charger is a joke. I bought batteries and two fast chargers from other vendors that work much better. I had to remove the foot protector from the mower so I could turn it and pull it backward. I really like the lightness of the machine. Like the other B&D 40V tools, its design started with some good ideas, but then marketing ruined them. Overall, though, I'm satisfied with the mover, but wish B&D had tried a little harder to improve the design and shipped it with more powerful batteries and charger. ... show more

  • 100% Honest Review
Style: 40V Cordless Mower Kit
Honestly, my first impression was that this was going to be too weak but it actually does a pretty good job (Battery life is about 10 minutes each). I had not mowed my side yard yet this year and the grass was seriously tall, 2 feet in some places with some crab grass clumps. This really went to town on the highest setting mowing the grass. The only draw back is the batteries only lasted about 10-15 minutes each and I think really more like 10 minutes but in those 10 minutes it knocked down some really tall grass with little struggle. I think with about 4-5 batteries this could do my whole .4 acres. The other major draw back is the charger, it does take awhile, 4-5 hours to charge each battery. But I have a rapid charger (90 minutes each) I got with the 40V Black and Decker Weed Eater I also bought off Amazon. I like the fact it does a great job, No Oil or Gas to have to remember to get, No pull starting or waiting for the mower to warm up, It is really light weight and it is pretty quiet. I was mowing at 7am and had no worries about disturbing any sleeping neighbors. I still give this a 5 star rating because the battery issue is really due to the size a yard someone has and the grass height they are trying to cut. The mower it's self is pretty good. ... show more

  • Disposable Mower... Batteries No Longer Hold Charge, And...
Style: 40V Cordless Mower Kit
I have been generally happy with this mower for four years. It's a little weak on power (torque) and the battery endurance is only fair. But I could cut both of my smallish lawns with the two batteries. ~600 square feet total. But I did need both of them to finish the job. Now, the included batteries do not deliver power to the mower, even though the on-battery indicator lights show a full charge. Mower just dies right out of the gate. B&D wants fully $100 apiece for replacement batteries. If I do that, I have spent most of what a new mower would cost. I tried a $35 aftermarket battery and it delivered good torque initially but, after one mowing doesn't appear to hold a charge either. Oh well, I guess this is a four year disposable plastic lawn mower. So much for trying to help the environment with and eLawn Mower. ... show more
