Description

Black Beauty (1994) (BD)Carol Thompson ("The Secret Garden," "Edward Scissorhands") wrote this wonderfully moving film adaptation of the classic children"s story told from the perspective of a horse named Black Beauty. Thrust on a personal odyssey -- taking him through good times and ill, trusted friends and callous enemies, disasters both natural and man-made -- Beauty experiences the best and worst of human nature, all the while seeking a safe place where he will be loved. The New York Times calls this "the most distinguished children"s film of the season..." and The Hollywood Reporter calls it "a graceful and moving film, playful and spirited."]]>

  • THIS MOVIE IS A TREASURE
From the moment the first strains of music begin, I am in tears - every time. This is a story from the horse's point of view -- with incidents cobbled together by the author who witnessed them growing up in England. The abuse mankind heaped on animals, with horses in particular, is made PAINFULLY CLEAR by our hero, Black Beauty. Black Beauty bravely holds out hope that somehow, some way, after being sold on and on again, that he will finally find his way to a forever loving home. This is beautifully filmed with a breathtaking soundtrack by none other than the genius composer Danny Elfman ("Oingo Boingo"). A great morality tale for all ages. Suggestion: grab a box of tissues, turn down the lights, and watch a tale that is still as relevant today as when the book was written in 1877. I highly recommend this movie version. I would give it ten stars if I could. ... show more

  • Another classic movie
This is a classic from my childhood. I love horses, and so anything related to horses I was interested. It's a story told thru the eyes of a horse. Narrated tale warms your heart, bring laughter to your heart and for me was a very touching tale I adore.

  • My absolute favorite film
When I first saw this film, I was around five years old and at the time, I was in love with it merely because it had horses. I played that tape(mind you this is 1995) so much so that even my mom would grow tired of walking in my room to find I was watching it once again. I'm 22 now and I can still proudly say that this movie remains my absolute favorite of all time. Thankfully, I've upgraded to the dvd but this movie holds a depth that I find hard to describe or explain. If you're a horse lover, and animal lover for that matter you can't help but see the world as Beauty does as Alan Cumming narrates the story from the horses point of view. There is so much beautiful detail in each sentence and phrase that you cannot help but feel the pain, concerns, joys, and comforts that he goes through. As humans, we encounter people every day. Some are cruel while others are kind and gentle. This movie portrays this beautifully and afterwards you really begin to think .."How terrible a life it would be if we never had a choice." It truly awakens you and Beauty states in one part of the movie "We don't get to choose the people in our lives. For us, it's all chance." To wrap it up, do not hesitate to see this film. It is phenominal in every way and that goes for any age. There has never been a movie that has moved me more than this one. ... show more

  • 5th Graders watched after we read the novel.
The class liked the vivid descriptions of Black Beauty's life, lots of live action in London, so good portrayal of setting and time period. Clear representation of the awful abuse that horses endured in the past that will resonate with all viewers! Lots of foreshadowing and cliffhangers. Emotions went up and down with all the sad and happy parts; glad to see Joe rescuing Black Beauty at the end. May contain spoilers if book is read first because some important parts such as his mother's role on Black Beauty's character and perspective on life was left out. Overall, excellent movie to watch to follow the story line. ... show more

  • Painful, but very well worth it
This one is different. It goes very deep into the psyche regarding the nature of Man as told through the horses in this movie. Watching this movie reminds me of watching documentaries about the Holocaust; something very much worth watching and learning from, but not the kind of thing I need to see ever again. The lesson was logged in, and in a very painful - but real - way. It also made me think of what it really must have been like to be a slave under control of other humans. I recommend this movie as a study of mankind, and his relationship with animals, and how man's ways has influenced their relationships with other humans over the centuries as well, and hopefully the viewer will take away some valuable insights that could impact the rest of their lives. This movie is very well done, painful to watch, but has the possibility to leave you thinking about it's depth of meaning for days. I watched it, I appreciated the quality of the production, I was profoundly impacted, but I don't think I'll ever watch it again. ... show more
