  • i held my nose...
Color: Green Aluminum - Satin Finish
.....10-2-13...the review below was written over a year ago and i just want to add an update. i like my knives for many reasons, i like this knife for most of them. after a year it's become my daily carry knife and i think will stay that way until something new comes out to replace it, i can't imagine it now, but who knows? when i'm in the woods or just doing something that i know will require a larger/stronger blade, i take the bigger blade along with the 940. it's just become a part of my daily living. knife people know what i mean, when you find that special blade you stick with it. i purchased a chris reeve small sebenza about 6 months ago and while it's a work of art and solid utility knife at the same time, i like the 940 better as a carry knife. i have 8 benchmades now and they are the cream of the american made pocket knife industry in my opinion. if you can do better for under $200.00 i don't know how. i'm getting another one soon and just storing it until the day i can't find this one or it gets ripped off. i like it that much. i could have bought three 940's for what i paid for the sebenza. .....ok, end of the update...enjoy what you carry ...isn't that what you do when you take a medicine that's good for you but tastes icky? that's how i bought this osborne 940, knowing it was a 'benchmade' but not loving the looks of it - on paper anyway. i still would be happier with a black or at least darker handle but that's all water under the bridge now. others that have seen and handled this knife love the dynamics and looks of the thing, i'm getting there. it's like scotch, it's an acquired taste, but once you "get it" there's nothing else quite like it. the 940 strikes me that way.(without the hangover) i own quite a few 'benchmade' folders and consider them the best in my collection of 60 or so folders. nothing too expensive but quite a few over the $100.00 mark. after owning this model i doubt i'll carry anything else as an e.d.c. blade. i have a griptillian i carry in the woods and when i know a tough job is in store for me, and a mini grip in my truck, but for daily use i can't think of a knife i own that i'd trade for this beauty. i live in a part of the country (northern mn) where carrying or pulling one out in public to do a chore is not considered anything to be concerned about by the general public. i could, carry the grip and use it for daily carry but it's wide and bulky, the 940 has all the utility of the grip without the feeling you're carrying a hunting knife with you all day. it came razor sharp and after a couple of weeks of using it for household/yard tasks has stayed that way without even a stropping. it's so light and narrow that you really forget you're carrying it. don't let that lightness fool you though, this is a tough tool. i've read many reviews about the pivot screw coming loose or being too tight. i really think 'benchmade' ships them this way so the owner can set the tightness and apply a drop of 'lock tight' to set it to their individual needs. if they came already tightened to some factory spec. and pre-glued, i'll bet there would be more complaints of not being able to adjust the tightness to the owners desire. it took me a minute to do this as well as lock tight the clip screws. it almost opens on it's own when held down and closes just as fast. the 'axis' system is the best out there and with a little care and lubricant, will last a long time. i know i've been all over the place in this review but my main point (no pun) was to look beyond the photo color and reverse tanto design (i prefer a drop point but this works very well) and buy this knife before it's out of production. it will be some day, and you'll have missed out on one of the best, non-custom folders out there for a great price. ... show more

  • I've found my forever EDC knife.
Color: Black Carbon Fiber - Satin Finish
This knife is a stunning work of art and science, and the fit and finish is on par with what Benchmade usually releases as a "Gold Class" knife for twice the price. You can see the quality that Benchmade puts into their products. The AXIS-lock system is buttery smooth after working it in a bit, and the blade has a rock solid lock-up. The carbon fiber scales are almost holographic, in that they change appearance depending on your viewing angle - very cool! The blade is S90V, which should take on a keenness, and hold an edge, as good as (or better than) anything else out there. The blade has a beautiful stonewashed finish that looks great with the carbon fiber - better IMO than a regular stainless finish would look, and it showcases the fine grain of the (very carbide-heavy) steel along the edges. This blade is everything that I look for in an EDC. For the size, this is easily the lightest knife I've ever encountered. Ultra-lightweight, travels well, pocket clip allows for a reasonably deep pocket carry, and blade length is legal in my state. It looks and feels pretty durable, the open back design makes it a breeze to clean, and it's classy enough that this knife straddles the "gentleman's knife" category. Those who are knowledgable about knives and/or read on any of the knife forums will understand what I mean when I say that this is a perfectly good choice for a "grail knife." My one gripe follows: This knife comes in a standard Benchmade blue box, upon which is printed "Handle with care. Benchmade knives are packaged extremely sharp." This was not the case for me, as the knife arrived with an edge somewhere between a butter knife and an old Buck 110 that I haven't sharpened in a couple years. I've read that this is a common complaint with Benchmade knives, so I don't feel that I got a "bad one" or anything... just nitpicking, I suppose, and I'm entitled for the price of admission! Having said all that, I do enjoy sharpening knives, and can't wait until my new sharpening supplies arrive so that I can find out just how tough it is to sharpen S90V by hand. :O I could always send it to Benchmade to take advantage of their lifetime sharpening service, but I don't want to let it out of my sight! All in all, I'm very pleased with this knife and fully expect it to provide decades, if not a lifetime, of dependable service. I'll post a follow-up after I've sharpened the S90V blade freehand... from what I've read, it's a PITA to sharpen. ... show more

  • The GOAT EDC knife
Color: Burnt Copper 6061-T6 Aluminum - DLC Batt...
I’m not a huge fan of this color combo but the 940 is the gold standard in EDC knives. Light, useful, durable and dependable. American made quality and an unmatched warranty. This knife was made to be carried and used. Classy and discreet enough to go in the pocket of your slacks at the office, but tough enough to carry when you’re hiking or hunting. It might not be the best knife at any one thing, but it does everything well. More often than not This is The knife that’s in my pocket. ... show more

  • The Osborne
Color: Burnt Copper 6061-T6 Aluminum - DLC Batt...
Such a great folding knife with the Axis lock. I am a big fan of the burnt copper. For the money, it’s so worth it. Extremely sharp of course. Feels great in hand. The scales are not slippery. Has a grip to it. Looks amazing under real sun light. I see what all the hype is about. The style of blade is great. Great blade stock. The weight of the knife is bad at all for how strong it is. You don’t want a light knife. It’s a knife! Free sharping for life with a great warranty!!! The designer of this blade, Osborne knew his stuff. He made a great blade. Anyone who collects knives should have this blade. I want the carbon fiber or the G1 scale version with a different blade style. I had a gift card for Amazon. I would have purchased it from Benchmade or an unauthorized dealer. Where I live, I don’t have a whole lot of options. ... show more
