  • Favorite EDC Knife – Lightweight and Holds an Edge
Color: Green Aluminum - Satin Finish
This is easily my favorite EDC knife. It’s lightweight, easy to carry, and just feels right in hand for everyday use. The blade holds an edge exactly how you’d expect from Benchmade—sharp, durable, and doesn’t need constant touching up. It handles daily tasks without any issues and still performs like new. The build quality is top-tier, and the action is smooth and reliable. It opens easily and locks up solid, giving you confidence every time you use it. Overall, Benchmade did it right with this one. If you’re looking for a dependable, high-quality EDC knife, this is hard to beat. ... show more

  • i held my nose...
Color: Green Aluminum - Satin Finish
.....10-2-13...the review below was written over a year ago and i just want to add an update. i like my knives for many reasons, i like this knife for most of them. after a year it's become my daily carry knife and i think will stay that way until something new comes out to replace it, i can't imagine it now, but who knows? when i'm in the woods or just doing something that i know will require a larger/stronger blade, i take the bigger blade along with the 940. it's just become a part of my daily living. knife people know what i mean, when you find that special blade you stick with it. i purchased a chris reeve small sebenza about 6 months ago and while it's a work of art and solid utility knife at the same time, i like the 940 better as a carry knife. i have 8 benchmades now and they are the cream of the american made pocket knife industry in my opinion. if you can do better for under $200.00 i don't know how. i'm getting another one soon and just storing it until the day i can't find this one or it gets ripped off. i like it that much. i could have bought three 940's for what i paid for the sebenza. .....ok, end of the update...enjoy what you carry ...isn't that what you do when you take a medicine that's good for you but tastes icky? that's how i bought this osborne 940, knowing it was a 'benchmade' but not loving the looks of it - on paper anyway. i still would be happier with a black or at least darker handle but that's all water under the bridge now. others that have seen and handled this knife love the dynamics and looks of the thing, i'm getting there. it's like scotch, it's an acquired taste, but once you "get it" there's nothing else quite like it. the 940 strikes me that way.(without the hangover) i own quite a few 'benchmade' folders and consider them the best in my collection of 60 or so folders. nothing too expensive but quite a few over the $100.00 mark. after owning this model i doubt i'll carry anything else as an e.d.c. blade. i have a griptillian i carry in the woods and when i know a tough job is in store for me, and a mini grip in my truck, but for daily use i can't think of a knife i own that i'd trade for this beauty. i live in a part of the country (northern mn) where carrying or pulling one out in public to do a chore is not considered anything to be concerned about by the general public. i could, carry the grip and use it for daily carry but it's wide and bulky, the 940 has all the utility of the grip without the feeling you're carrying a hunting knife with you all day. it came razor sharp and after a couple of weeks of using it for household/yard tasks has stayed that way without even a stropping. it's so light and narrow that you really forget you're carrying it. don't let that lightness fool you though, this is a tough tool. i've read many reviews about the pivot screw coming loose or being too tight. i really think 'benchmade' ships them this way so the owner can set the tightness and apply a drop of 'lock tight' to set it to their individual needs. if they came already tightened to some factory spec. and pre-glued, i'll bet there would be more complaints of not being able to adjust the tightness to the owners desire. it took me a minute to do this as well as lock tight the clip screws. it almost opens on it's own when held down and closes just as fast. the 'axis' system is the best out there and with a little care and lubricant, will last a long time. i know i've been all over the place in this review but my main point (no pun) was to look beyond the photo color and reverse tanto design (i prefer a drop point but this works very well) and buy this knife before it's out of production. it will be some day, and you'll have missed out on one of the best, non-custom folders out there for a great price. ... show more

  • Lives up to the hype - 6 MONTH UPDATE
Color: Green Aluminum - Satin Finish
UPDATE 2/26/15 - 6 months in this knife is still amazing. The wierd powder coating has been gone for so long that I forgot about it until I read my old review. It only had one issue in 6 months and that was an easy fix - the pocket clip bent (I have no idea how) and I had to take it off and bend it back in place then put it back on, which took all of 75 seconds. The steel is super thick on the clip, so I am going to assume it bent because of something I did, nothing to do with the knife's design. This knife is my new thumb, figurativly of course. I use it for EVERYTHING. I use to to pry, I use it to screw (bad idea, but possible...), I use it to cut, I use it to stab holes in plastic buckets, I use it to reach things that fell in a tight space, I use it to cut fruit, I use it to slice cheese, I use it to ANYTHING. Anything you need either a knife or a small piece of perfectly shaped matal for a second of leverage, this knife covers it. I forgot it in my other pair of pants once and made it 10 minutes towards work before I realized. I turned around to get it. I'd rather be late than be on time without this knife. It fits my hand like a glove. I know I sound crazy, but this might be the pefect knife at this point. I have owned a few knives in my day, but this one is the best by far. --------- Christ, what can I say about this knife that hasnt already been said? This knife lives up to the hype. The Axis lock system is brilliant, makes opening the knife smooth and quicker than any assisted oepning knife. The steel is as good as most upper-midrange kitchen knifes. The steel chosen will hold an edge for a good long time, get ridiculously sharp and still be able to be used as the tool that it is. The blade shape is very aesthetically pleasing while still being very useful as a tool. Great cutting edge length. The handle took a day or two to get used to - or the coating wore off a little. Out of the box it felt a little like holding sandpaper which wasn't unpleasant. Within a day of going in and out of my pocket it was perfect. ... show more

  • The best all around EDC knife EVER!
Color: Green Aluminum - Satin Finish
I'm not one to say a certain knife is better than the rest, but this can really hold its own. I'm not even joking here; this knife is amazing. First of all, this knife is Benchmade, so you know this knife is of high quality (for a production knife). For its very slim profile and lightweight design, the knife packs a pretty long blade (3.4 inches). Benchmade introduces the modified reverse tanto blade that boasts a S30V steel. The handle is an anodized green aluminum handle with steel liners. The spine has a jeweled, purple titanium back spacer which accents the knife beautifully. BLADE: -The blade shape is a modified reverse tanto blade. This blade shape has a long belly that is great for slicing. The tip has a modified tanto shape that allows piercing potential. The functionality of the blade shape is vast. The blade steel is S30V steel which is high quality steel. It retains its sharpness for a long time. Sharpening the knife isn't impossible, but take a little longer than say 154 cm steel. The knife is ambidextrous with dual thumb studs. AXIS LOCK: -The trademark axis lock of the Benchmade is one of the best locks around. It keeps the knife deadlocked and it's going to take a lot of force to break that lock. Benchmade has been doing lock-testing videos on YouTube lately, and you can see the performance tests on there. As for deployment, the knife whips open with speed and ferocity when flicked open. HANDLE: -The handle is green anodized aluminum. My biggest complaint on this knife would be here. First of all, the green handle looks mediocre. WHY GREEN!?!?! Why not blue? Red? Black? Something better? Now, I'm saying this subjectively and reviewing it on my personal basis, so that's why I'm not representing it on the final score. Not only that, but the color doesn't really affect the performance of the knife. Note, I do own the carbon fiber version, along with the black version, so those are magnificent pieces of work. Another issue is with the aluminum. The aluminum chips, scratches, and mars way too easily!!! It shows fingernail marks, rubs, and abrasions like no tomorrow. Unless you are super careful with the knife or don't even carry it around, you will have a couple marks by the first week. The knife also feels a little chalky in the first couple weeks, but over time, it begins to smooth out, depending on how frequently you abuse and use your knife. Also, the knife does have tip up carry only, and can be changed to either side. The knife is GREAT, and I love it as being my top 3 knives. Besides the minor aesthetic negatives, the functionality and fit and finish is amazing. This knife is amazing and everyone should own one. PROS: -Great blade shape (modified reverse tanto) -Great blade steel (S30V steel) -Slim profile with a long blade (3.4 inches) -One handed opening -Extremely smooth opening -blade opens with speed -Ambidextrous functionality -Tip up carry (either side) CONS: -Green color? -Aluminum chips and scratches easily ... show more

  • Seriously Great Knife
Color: Green Aluminum - Satin Finish
Maybe you have seen some of my knife reviews here. I have a ton of them. Everything from a $700 Criss Reeve down to my plethora of Case knives. Many I am pretty hard on or I have to make recommendations on how to bring out the intended fine product from the less than stellar knife shaped object that more than likely you will receive. So what about this twenty year old design classic Green 940 ? The short story is : Even better than I expected ! Just buy it and you won't regret it ! Sure it costs some serious money. Worth it ! (and I don't use my exclamation marks often). Long story : Yes better than I expected and I have two other 940s; the Carbon Fiber one with the S90V blade and more recently the Black G10 handled one with the more common S30V blade. Why all the surprises then ? To start, the green anodized aluminum handle. I had always assumed it was just slick aluminum and I don't care for slick metal handled knives ( think stainless steel handle as an example of what I don't like ). This Green 940 is NOTHING like that. It is more like a fairly coarsely grit blasted Titanium handle. Even grippier. It is hard to explain but it is easy to keep ahold of it / won't easily slip out of your fingers. It has very fine but effective texture. The other reason I ignored this knife for so long was I assumed the handle was painted or lightly anodized. No this is a pretty darned substantial feeling finish. I wouldn't say if you fall off your motorcycle with it in your back pocket that it won't show some road rash but I think If I'm half way careful I can keep this one looking great for years to come. I didn't think I could before I held one in my hand. Acton good, I turned the pivot screw counter clock wise about two degrees to turn it into an instant dropper; then turned the screw back one degree because that was all I needed. Big bronze washers compared to most all of my other knives in a similar price range ($140 to $300). Centered just great. No problems with fit and finish . . . very nice green; I wasn't disappointed there for sure. Blade sharpness ? Wel l l l . . . not great but usable. Several stones later on the Edge Pro Apex and it splits arm hairs lengthwise at will. Blade hardness ? I have no way of telling HRC but I can say that while using my finish stones, a Shapton Pro 5,000 and a Norton 8,000 water stone ( the yellow one that we all love) hardly any black swarf came off onto those stones. I wound up doing the final edge finish with a 4000 grit Resin Bond Diamond Matrix stone. That took some swarf off. 4 percent vanadium in the alloy is the threshold where fine grit diamond is necessary to refine the edge and this proved to be true with this S30V Benchmade so judging by this I would say the heat treat on this knife is pretty decent. For what it is worth the Edge Pro Shapton Glass stones were able to cut the steel pretty well in the coarser grits and swarf did show up on the stones but not as much as the softer blades with less Vanadium. I am really enjoying this knife. ... show more

  • Best EDC knife ever
Color: Green Aluminum - Satin Finish
Best EDC Pocketknife of all time. Easily. Smoothest locking feature. The S30V steal is absolutely gorgeous and highly durable. I have EDC it, i have done a lot of abuse on it and its more reliable than ever. Scratching and a small chip because of extended abuse which is ti be expected. I use the reverse tanto blade as a paint can opener at work. The purple titanium back spacers with the green aluminum scales look phenomenal in the hand. The coating feels comfortable and soft, has grip but doesnt tear up the pockets. The axis lock is the smoothest and funniest locking mechanism in my opinion. It flicks open like butter every single time. Comes with a deep carry 4 way pocket clip. The knife looks better the more you use it. After years of use or even months of hard use the green coating on the scales will rub off and leave a aluminum shine underneath. Gives it character and makes it all the more special. Its a phenomenal knife that can and will be passed down for generations and used for decades if you properly maintain it. Im truly in the belief its the greatest EDC pocket knife available today and has been for the past 20 years. ... show more

  • Another excellent knife from Benchmade
Color: Green Aluminum - Satin Finish
I've been using this knife for just over a month now and I've been very impressed with it overall. As with all Benchmade knives I've owned, it is a very high quality tool. Over the last month I've put this knife to some serious use and it has performed admirably. This is my first knife with the S30V steel, but I have to say I've been impressed so far. Here is what I've loved about the Benchmade 940 Osborne: 1) I love the Axis lock! Of all lock types on folding knives, this is my absolute favorite. 2) Very easy one-handed opening & closing. 3) The aluminum handles are a good size and provide a great grip. 4) The blade-to-handle ratio is very good on this model. 5) The S30V steel has proven to be very tough! 6) The blade shape makes it easy to get a good sharp tip, which is great for puncturing. Unfortunatly, my experience with this particular model has not been 100% positive. Here are some issues I've found with it: 1) I've never gotten a Benchmade that wasn't razor sharp out of the box before - but this one wasn't. The edge profile was so wide that it would have been more at home on an ax. Personally, I like to put my own edge on a knife anyway - but reshaping this S30V blade to 40 degrees was quite a task... 2) The pivot screw for the blade worked itself loose after a few days and the knife developed a slight rattle. I tweaked it back to how I wanted, but that only lasted a couple more days. It turns out this won't stay in place without a bit of loktite applied to the pivot screw. Overall, I'd recommend this knife to most knife-carrying people. It's great for EDC, although it's not my favorite Benchmade in that category. Personally, I have found I prefer the Benchmade 707 Sequel McHenry & Williams Design Knife - although I know that's just personal preference. I plan to continue carrying this 940 Osborne every day for at least another month before I make a final judgment between this and the BM707 for my usage. ... show more

  • Best EDC/Tactical Carry Money Can Buy
Color: Green Aluminum - Satin Finish
I have been using this knife for a week now and I love it. Previously,I had been going through knives at a rate of one every 10 months. I needed something to hold up a little longer than that. After doing a few hours of research, I came upon this knife. Everyone said that it was the best. From what I have seen, there is no other knife that can touch it. The construction is solid and there is absolutely no play in the lock. It took me about an hour to coordinate my hand movement, but now it is flawless. I have used it confidently at work, and I would have no problem taking this into a fight. If this knife ever does wear out, I will be buying another one. I have been using this knife for six months now, and it is still just as good as when I got it. I use it very heavily every day. I have not had to sharpen the blade yet, although when I do, I am sending it to a professional ( not lifesharp). The body of the knife has some very minor scratches, but it still has 100% integrity. I will post again at one year. After nearly 3.5 years of use, this knife is holding up better than I could imagine. I keep it clipped to my pocket all day every day, so there is mild wear on the pocket clip but nothing structural. The only other issue is with minor chipping on the blade. This is normal with a metal like S30V, and it is mostly corrected with proper sharpening. As far as sharpening goes, I have gotten pretty good with this knife. It takes a long time due to the extreme hardness, but I can still get a razor edge. Eight years in, and the knife is still in full working order. I keep the blade at 20 degrees per side, and it gives me a good 6 months between sharpenings. The pocket clip is completely silver along with some marring of the aluminum, but it is corrosion free. ... show more
