  • i held my nose...
Color: Green 6061-T6 Aluminum - Satin Finish
.....10-2-13...the review below was written over a year ago and i just want to add an update. i like my knives for many reasons, i like this knife for most of them. after a year it's become my daily carry knife and i think will stay that way until something new comes out to replace it, i can't imagine it now, but who knows? when i'm in the woods or just doing something that i know will require a larger/stronger blade, i take the bigger blade along with the 940. it's just become a part of my daily living. knife people know what i mean, when you find that special blade you stick with it. i purchased a chris reeve small sebenza about 6 months ago and while it's a work of art and solid utility knife at the same time, i like the 940 better as a carry knife. i have 8 benchmades now and they are the cream of the american made pocket knife industry in my opinion. if you can do better for under $200.00 i don't know how. i'm getting another one soon and just storing it until the day i can't find this one or it gets ripped off. i like it that much. i could have bought three 940's for what i paid for the sebenza. .....ok, end of the update...enjoy what you carry ...isn't that what you do when you take a medicine that's good for you but tastes icky? that's how i bought this osborne 940, knowing it was a 'benchmade' but not loving the looks of it - on paper anyway. i still would be happier with a black or at least darker handle but that's all water under the bridge now. others that have seen and handled this knife love the dynamics and looks of the thing, i'm getting there. it's like scotch, it's an acquired taste, but once you "get it" there's nothing else quite like it. the 940 strikes me that way.(without the hangover) i own quite a few 'benchmade' folders and consider them the best in my collection of 60 or so folders. nothing too expensive but quite a few over the $100.00 mark. after owning this model i doubt i'll carry anything else as an e.d.c. blade. i have a griptillian i carry in the woods and when i know a tough job is in store for me, and a mini grip in my truck, but for daily use i can't think of a knife i own that i'd trade for this beauty. i live in a part of the country (northern mn) where carrying or pulling one out in public to do a chore is not considered anything to be concerned about by the general public. i could, carry the grip and use it for daily carry but it's wide and bulky, the 940 has all the utility of the grip without the feeling you're carrying a hunting knife with you all day. it came razor sharp and after a couple of weeks of using it for household/yard tasks has stayed that way without even a stropping. it's so light and narrow that you really forget you're carrying it. don't let that lightness fool you though, this is a tough tool. i've read many reviews about the pivot screw coming loose or being too tight. i really think 'benchmade' ships them this way so the owner can set the tightness and apply a drop of 'lock tight' to set it to their individual needs. if they came already tightened to some factory spec. and pre-glued, i'll bet there would be more complaints of not being able to adjust the tightness to the owners desire. it took me a minute to do this as well as lock tight the clip screws. it almost opens on it's own when held down and closes just as fast. the 'axis' system is the best out there and with a little care and lubricant, will last a long time. i know i've been all over the place in this review but my main point (no pun) was to look beyond the photo color and reverse tanto design (i prefer a drop point but this works very well) and buy this knife before it's out of production. it will be some day, and you'll have missed out on one of the best, non-custom folders out there for a great price. ... show more

  • Everything I wanted in an EDC knife.
Color: Black Carbon Fiber - Satin Finish
I don't want to collect knives, even though this one is in that Production Knives category of collectability for sure. I wanted an EDC knife that fit the following desires: - Slim and light: The 940-1 is narrow in both width, and height; the latter because the blade design has a low profile. It is so light, that it feels like the combination of craftsmanship and technology that it is. - A blade shape that lends itself to most uses: The reverse tanto design leaves a broad, useable belly to the cutting edge, yet retains strength all the way out to the tip for piercing and prying. - A blade material that holds a useable edge as long as possible. (Still be able to open an envelope without snagging.): The S90V's edge retention is extremely good for heavier use. It can be a bear to sharpen due to it's hardness and metallurgic properties, but mine came with a good edge, and Benchmark will sharpen it for you for free, for life. - A level of "this is a tool, not something to baby" that will let me use the heck out of it for anything at all without feeling like I'm abusing a piece of art: I looked at "finer" brands, but decided that the resultant spending of over $400 on an EDC knife would make me more hesitant to use it to it's fullest, thus defeating the purpose of having it. The 940-1 has enough of a 'common' factor to it that it seems more no nonsense when it comes to employing it for whatever comes along. - An overall uniqueness that will make me pay more attention to not misplacing the thing, and making it one of the few things that I keep forever: The 940 with the aluminum scales (handle material) and S30V blade is a beautiful piece of cutlery and would more than suffice for my needs over the years, but the uniqueness of the 940-1 satisfies my desire to have something just a bit more special. - An overall design aesthetic that appeals to my personal tastes: I personally like the long, slim overall look of the knife, and I very much like the reverse tanto blade design as it look more durable and "capable" than a traditional drop-point or clip-point. (As a coincidental bonus, the dark, carbon fiber scales and stonewash blade finish perfectly compliment my EDC S&W stainless revolver with black, Hogue grips.) It also satisfies my wanting for something that is simply fun to handle ... the smoothness of the pivot and locking mechanism, the feel of the materials, the overall design, all make the 940-1 a wonderful 'toy' in those regards. - A good warranty: Lifetime warranty, serviced in Oregon (a bordering state for me), an extremely good reputation for service, an exceptional blade replacement policy if the blade is broken from misuse or abuse (only $30 to replace the blade on this $250+ knife!), and the free, lifetime sharpening service. I'm no expert or aficionado (firearms are more my forte), but after spending many hours pouring over reviews, forum threads, and the specifications of several brands, I feel extremely satisfied with my decision. ... show more

  • The GOAT EDC knife
Color: Burnt Copper 6061-T6 Aluminum - DLC Batt...
I’m not a huge fan of this color combo but the 940 is the gold standard in EDC knives. Light, useful, durable and dependable. American made quality and an unmatched warranty. This knife was made to be carried and used. Classy and discreet enough to go in the pocket of your slacks at the office, but tough enough to carry when you’re hiking or hunting. It might not be the best knife at any one thing, but it does everything well. More often than not This is The knife that’s in my pocket. ... show more

  • The Osborne
Color: Burnt Copper 6061-T6 Aluminum - DLC Batt...
Such a great folding knife with the Axis lock. I am a big fan of the burnt copper. For the money, it’s so worth it. Extremely sharp of course. Feels great in hand. The scales are not slippery. Has a grip to it. Looks amazing under real sun light. I see what all the hype is about. The style of blade is great. Great blade stock. The weight of the knife is bad at all for how strong it is. You don’t want a light knife. It’s a knife! Free sharping for life with a great warranty!!! The designer of this blade, Osborne knew his stuff. He made a great blade. Anyone who collects knives should have this blade. I want the carbon fiber or the G1 scale version with a different blade style. I had a gift card for Amazon. I would have purchased it from Benchmade or an unauthorized dealer. Where I live, I don’t have a whole lot of options. ... show more
