Description

This book was made to take one from the city to the backcountry and talk about everything in between. It was made to answer questions and inspire. When I started backpack hunting, resources were limited, and not in a condensed form. This made the whole process of learning quite taxing. I was constantly trying to find information on the subject, and when I did, I soaked up as much as I could. It took years and was the reason it took me so long to get into the field. The unknown can be a scary thing. Let this book bridge the gap that is keeping you from chasing your dreams of adventure, pursuing the wild meat we all know and crave. Read more

  • Perfect book if you're at all interested in getting into backpack hunting.
If you're considering getting into backpack hunting regardless of whether it's for one night or ten this is a great book to start with. It's an easy read and from front to back it contains practical advice to help get you started. The author covers the front to back for everything you need out there and does it in a way that is honest and doesn't push his personal preferences on you. He is also honest about the reservations and fear that are pretty normal with heading out onto a mountain for days on end with only the stuff on your back your first few times and all the ways we convince ourselves not to do something. To sum it up, great read, practical advice and the right place to start if you want to try your hand at backpack hunting. ... show more

  • Basic info
This book contains very basic info but there isn't anything in it that you can't get off of reading a few websites online after a basic google search. The thing I was least impressed with, and I get it would be tough with changing gear, but the author doesn't do a good of being giving any real specifics toward gear or company recommendations. I won't claim to be the most experienced of hunter but have done a have spent some time out of a backpack and this book didn't teach me anything new. If you are starting out brand new and have no clue what you are getting into then maybe it will be a good starting point, but again it is likely not going to get you turned onto current clothing or equipment. ... show more

  • Great for adult onset hunters!
As someone who is an "Adult onset hunter" I found this book very helpful. Its a great overview and will certainly make you better prepared for getting out in the field. If you're a beginner and want a great Broadview of how to get started then this book is great for you. After reading this book I spent 22 days hunting in the back country in total both in my home state and out of state. This book helped increase my confidence to go get after it. And now I've got 100 pounds of harvested meat in the freezer plus a ton of great memories. ... show more

  • Too much emphasis on backpacking vs hunting, at least for experienced backpackers.
This a very inspiring and enjoyable read. There is quite a bit of helpful information, particularly for those with limited backpacking experience. For an experienced backpacker looking to add in hunting, this book offers less value. It would be nice if there was more emphasis on the skills and strategies inherent to backpack hunting, with the emphasis on the hunting. More detail on things such as camp selection considerations, glassing strategies (esp. while minimizing weight), stalking, route planning and considerations for the approach and in the hunting area, effective scouting, and other hunting specific content would have been awesome. ... show more

  • Insightful
Much appreciation to my new friend Emory, for pointing me toward this read. Most everything, one could think of, when venturing out on a backpacking hunt, is considered and covered in its pages. So many of the questions and concerns, I had, were either answered or settled, while traveling through these ten chapters. Well worth the time spent, considering the knowledge and enjoyment gained. Thanks Josh. ... show more

  • Straight and true
If you've never been backpacking this book will help you get out the door. If you're a backpacker who's never been backpack hunting this book will certainly give you nudge you might need.

  • Super comprehensive!
The media could not be loaded. This book was amazing. I read the whole thing in two days and it has every single piece of information you need to hunt the backcountry. I have always been impressed with Josh's writing on his blog and other places, and this book did not disappoint. This is a great book to read and re-read because it is chuck full of great tips and helpful insights. ... show more

  • Confidence and unbiased.
Great book. It helped me feel more confident. Also his gear suggestions feels unbiased, which in the backpack and hunting community is hard to find. I would recommend this book to anyone trying to get into backpack hunting. If you already backpack hunt then this will probably not interest you.
