Works great for small solar projects (12 volt Lighting)
I've used it for 7 months now to charge alternately a 32AHr, 26AHR and 8Ahr deep cycle AGM batteries and it has done a great job. I have a 30 watt monocrystalline solar panel wired directly to it and connect it directly to my batteries using various quick disconnect connectors. I monitor the state of discharge (with a multimeter)and never let my batteries fall below 75% of rated capacity (as recommended by battery manufacturers for best practice and long life of battery.) The Battery Tender as described is a 3 stage charge controller and will put the most voltage out when the battery needs it and cuts back as it approaches full charge down to a trickle level. All the batteries quickly recharge even on partial sun days. Takes 3-6 hours of sun on the biggest battery less on the others. Keeping them topped off is easier (better for it), faster to recharge, and simple to rotate each bettery for its day or shared day of charging. I've monitored its output to the various batteries and it does its job as described at manufacturers website. Charge light lets you know when it is working and indicates what stage its at by color or flashing. Again just as described. I use 12 volt DC LED lights and and connected to my inverter some AC CFL lights and charge all my phones and run my laptop a few hours EVERYDAY! If you have the right expectation of what wattage you planned to use and think about the set-up you can make a nice daily use (or emergency use) system with these components. I am very pleased with the product to used for a small solar systems using a 45 watt panel or less. I plan to buy a few more and connect up lights, radios, in other rooms all over the house. My way of going green. I also charge my AA, AAA rechargeable batteries with a DC connectable battery charger off my 32AHr battery too! Saves me a lot of money on batteries and I use more battery operated devices now and the family enjoys the whole system. Use the Battery Tender only to charge batteries and do not try to run other things from it. That is not what is was designed for. ******** 1 YEAR LATER: Now Feb 2013 AND THIS PRODUCT IS STILL SERVING ME WELL AND AS DESCRIBED. GREAT FOR SMALL TARGET INSTALATIONS!

Works as designed, with the right solar panel
I own three of these now, and will probably buy a couple more. For the money they seem to work great. I've owned one for a few years, and the others are newer, so I guess I haven't run them long enough to know if they damage batteries or not, but they keep batteries topped off and I haven't seen signs of overcharging yet. The biggest gotcha with these is that you need to size the solar panel accordingly. I've got an old plow truck that has some issues, so there is a constant drain on the battery. I use a 40 amp panel with this controller and it keeps the battery topped off all summer while the truck just sits. Before using this the battery would drain in a matter of a few weeks and I was buying new batteries every year. I'm on the same battery since using this controller. I also have controllers on my boat and jetski, 20 & 5 amp panels, respectively, and both work fine for those uses. For the money, this controller works as advertised for me.

Excellent Performer & Customer Service!
I just installed this a couple of days ago and it is working perfectly, connected to my Renogy 30W solar panel. I spoke with Deltran's excellent customer service department and found out the following: - the solar controller has a blocking diode, to prevent current reversal back from the battery to the panel at night, or when the panel is not putting out enough voltage due to cloud cover, etc. - the output side of the solar controller can be disconnected going to the battery without having to disconnect the input side coming from the solar panel. The voltage coming into the solar controller from the solar panel will not damage the controller. Be sure to use a solar panel rated between 5W - 45W, as the specs of the solar controller mention, which is also printed on the solar controller itself. - the (4) size #6 screw terminals can not be removed. I wanted to use ring terminal connectors instead of spade terminal connectors due to the spade connectors having a tendency to spread. Prior to calling Deltran, I attempted to remove the screws which met resistance after unscrewing almost all the way, so I stopped and spoke with Deltran. I'll try to use heavier spade terminals, if the need arises. As of now, the slight spreading is not an issue due to everything being stationary. Two suggestions: 1) It would be nice if Deltran made the screws removable. I assume they made them non removable so they cannot be lost, or perhaps the purpose is to make the unit more moisture resistant, where the screws enter the controller. I'm not certain though. 2) Why didn't Deltran make their Battery Tender solar controller Water Resistant or Waterproof?? After all, this solar controller is meant to be used with a solar panel which obviously will be used outdoors in the environment, where it rains or snows. It's hard to believe this was an oversight. This issue had to be discussed in one of those Research & Development meetings. Perhaps they'll come up with a Waterproof version in the future. I've given this solar controller 5 Stars as it is performing well. I'll be sure to post any updates. I have the 1.25A Battery Tender Plus and the 800mAh Battery Tender Waterproof charger which have performed flawlessly for years, and I expect the Battery Tender solar controller will also perform flawlessly.

Working great with my 10w panel
This was easy to install and is keeping the battery charged. I used ring terminal connectors because the 14 gauge wire wouldn't fit. My only concern is that the instructions say not to mount the device to a combustible material. I installed it on my boat where everything is somewhat combustible. I ended up mounting it to a metal circuit box cover.

Reliable Solar Controller
It has been over 18 months since this controller was put into service. My set-up is one 15 W solar panel and is charging an Optima Yellow Top AGM battery. The battery is connected to a 300W, 12 volt security gate that cycles a few times a day. I would have preferred to have output terminals on the controller, but it works just fine the way it is. I added some spade terminal forks to the end of each wire to provide a more secure connection at the solar controller. I tried first just wrapping the wire around the screw and tightening the screw, but that isn't a very good connection and if it moves much there is a risk of shorting the wires together. I added inline fuses nearest the solar panel and battery to help with maintenance and in case something fails I don't want the panel or battery to be damaged. The controller and battery have been checked every six months with a voltmeter and the battery is always nearly fully charged, if not fully charged, and the LED changes color when it becomes fully charged. The weather varies from a high temp of 90 degrees in the summer to 0 degrees in the winter. I'd buy it again if I have another project that is supplied by 5-45 W of solar panels. If it fails in the future I will update the review.

If you want a solar powered trickle charger, pair this with your panel and you have a good solution.
This has a very specific purpose. I've used solar battery chargers before that you plug into your 12V power source or directly to your battery. They haven't worked. Taking that same solar panel and plugging it into this worked. One of the key things I learned (the hard way) is that the solar panels I had did not use the Red is + standard. This unit has protection against getting your wires backwards. The power LED helped me figure that out. Once I got my wiring right this thing just worked.

Does amazing work, reliable, affordable.
I have used these on cars, boats, RVs, storage trailers. The unit works with a solar panel, up to 45 Watts. Keeps batteries topped off, and can even recharge them using only sunlight. The design is great, durable and robust. The only issue plaguing the design are the bare, non-separated wire nuts. these should be designed more like a shielded lug, so that common items like SAE fittings can be directly and safely connected. Once you strip the wire, crimp a connector, and screw it in, the tops of the screws are still bare and prone to arcing/shorting out. Easy fix with some electrical tape, but that looks gross, and the residue will be there forever if the tape is removed or wears off.

It does what it is supposed to do (eventually)
This works as advertized. I have used it for about a month on my lawn tractor that was in a shed for the winter, It took about a week(After the modifications below) for it to fully charge the battery because it and discharged some over the winter, I have several complaints\suggestions. 1) It has input and output terminal on opposite ends with screws to attach the wires There is no shielding or covers over these blocks, which leave them open to shorting if they touch any thing metal. 2) It does not come with any wires like other Battery Tender products. Most panels have a two wire modular plug which you would need to cut to use with this charger. To solve this I purchased a "Trailer Wiring Kit 2 Pole Flat Set" from one of the major Auto repair\parts national chains and cut it in half. I soldered ring connectors from a wiring Kit rather than crimping them. After attaching the wires, I covered the exposed terminals screws with electrical tape to prevent an accidental short circuit. 3) I originally had four 1.5 W panels, which did not charge the battery. After I added a added a 7.5 W panel for a total of 10.5w (one 7.5w and two 1.5 w panels, it worked fine.
