As an engineer, I wired Fence-Mate zapper a little differently to keep Racoon-like critters from climbing bird feeder pole. Shown DIY plastic ladder is wired so that alternation copper wires connected to FenceMate +/- terminals. Measured between wires with neon voltmeter is pulsed 10k volts. Seems to work nicely without harming animals; they learn quickly. Also operates from digital 12-volt power supply set dusk to dawn operation.

We have sheep that love to put their nose underneath the fence. Between horns and thick fleece a few of them have figured out how to bypass the current fence charger. I decided to split up the areas and reduce the fence length. Thought I would try new charger as well. This straws a longer spark gap than the brand name I was using. Whether that's because of age or design I'm not sure. But I know that this should get somebody's attention whether they try and raise the fence with horns or sneak through with thick fleece. The unit itself seems to be well sealed. Not worried about moisture or bugs getting in. Of course it will be partially covered in a small field box, but we all know that the best laid plans can go astray I am using this with a 12 Volt deep discharge battery, supplemented with a solar cell. The only negative I have, I wish the leads to the battery were of a sturdier insulation and wire gage. I suspect that will be the first thing to need fixing if we end up constantly hooking and unhooking to the battery.
