The concept is beguiling... your handgun kept safely secure from kids and others who shouldn't have access to it, but with you being able to put your hands on it within a few seconds should an emergency arise. No need to worry about forgetting a combination in the stress of a dark night. No squinting at a dimly lit keypad. Alas. I really, really wanted this safe to work. But the biometric part of its design simply does not reliably work. And a gun safe that you can't get into is worse than no gun safe at all. I tried re-registering my fingerprints, multiple times. I tried using different fingers. I tried being very consistent in how moist or dry my fingers are. I tried placing my finger on the sensor exactly as I had when I registered the print... and then when that didn't work, I tried heavier pressure and lighter pressure. I tried rolling my finger ever so slightly so the sensor would see a slightly different pattern. I tried leaving a clean handkerchief permanently on top of the safe so I could clean the sensor window prior to using it. Nothing helped. My experience was that your best shot at getting into this safe is immediately after registering your finger(s). Even then, it would often take several attempts. But at least it would eventually work. Usually. But then, as the weeks and months went by, it would get worse. To the point where you could sit next to the safe and spend 30 unproductive minutes repeatedly placing your finger over the sensor. The safe itself is well-built. If the biometric part worked this would be the ideal bedside companion. But it doesn't. After you own it for awhile you'll understand why Barska included a key with it. The good news is that this safe will keep the kids out. The bad news is that it will keep you out, as well.

I use this for my conceal carry to store close by to my truck when I leave. It’s small enough for the pistol and easy to access for myself but not any kids if they were to be sneaky and try to get inside. I had no issues setting up a few finger prints, and have used it a few hundred times now for opening and closing with no issues. Directions are pretty straight forward for setup. This is a pretty lightweight safe, so it’s not something you would store your most valuable possessions in… so don’t expect that. You can open the thing with an Allen wrench on the front of the safe, so it’s not really that great as a safe if you think about it… but I use this for it’s purpose so a kid or guest in my house doesn’t access my CC guns if they’re snooping. Always good to lock up guns and I got this safe on a super sale and only paid 1/3 price :). If you are looking for a safe to store valuables in your room or closet I suppose this would work too, to keep the kids out or something. But unless you bolt this, which you can, a thief can easily carry this lightweight safe out and open it on his own in a minute.

I purchased this safe April 2014 and in June 2020 the fingerprint reader won't get power anymore. I am still giving it 4 stars as it worked flawlessly with heavy use for over 6 years. I opened it on average of 10-20 times per week and it never failed. For the price I paid it was well worth it. Periodically I would have my kids try and open it to test the fingerprint reader accuracy and it (correctly) never opened for them. It is not fireproof and will not stand up to a serious attack with tools, but it will keep the contents secure from lesser attempts. For minimum security, you must bolt this safe to something so it can't be picked up and carried off. If those caveats are ok with you, then this is a great buy. This safe could comfortably hold up to two small to mid size handguns and a few extra magazines. It opens in 2-3 seconds and you can turn off the audio opening beep. I am not buying this model to replace the broken one only because I am getting the larger version this time.

It's a good little safe for the money. Fairly easy to program and reads biometrics reliably for a reliable open of the safe. Battery life is excellent, been using it for over a year and still on the first set of batteries. The initial setting if for a loud beep when it opens which is a negative for a bedside safe. Bright side is that you can easily disable the beep (info in the instructions). As for construction, it's pretty basic and simple. Material is good for its purpose (fairly heavy gauge metal) but by no means impenetrable (I would guess a good crowbar might be able to flare it enough to break it open. No fire rating because it is not insulated (but that is not what this safe is really geared for anyway). If you are looking for a good place to store your daily carry or a little cash etc, IMHO it is a good safe for the price .. If you are looking to store the family jewels, I'd look to something else.

If you NEED to access anything that you place in this safe...then DO NOT BUY THIS SAFE!!! The fingerprint reader is ABYSMAL!!! Every time I use this safe I SCREAM at myself for EVER buying it...and I say (in my mind) that I NEED to go and warn others! This is your warning! DON'T DO IT! Buy THIS safe instead! https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00RM71EW2/ This sucker works great and is SUPER FAST to get in to! And it works EVERY TIME!!! I have two of them! Fingerprint readers suck when they're done RIGHT (i.e. on iPhone) but even then they are "touchy" to say the least (try unlocking your phone with a slightly wet finger)! Fuggedaboudit!!! A 4-digit PIN (any sequence of the four keys) is SO MUCH easier and FASTER! Okay...I'm done. I feel SO MUCH better getting this off my chest!
