  • A good handset for the price, after modifications. Check for plastic 'flashing' from the mold process in the microphone port!
Style: Speaker
At first, the signal reports I was receiving were entirely awful and people said I was nearly unintelligible. I decided to investigate a little to see if the unit could be salvaged and noticed that if you looked closely at where the microphone port was, there was only a tiny pinhole over where the condenser microphone would be. The mold they used to manufacture the housing had a larger area that was obviously intended to be the relief for the microphone, but it was obstructed by very thin plastic flashing that apparently leaked around the edges of the mold. I carefully opened up the microphone port with a knife (an x-acto or the like would be best for this, I used the knife I had on me at the time) to the approximate intended port size. Once I had done this, I got 5x9 reports. ... show more

  • Locked in transmit - poor solder joints were the problem - pictures showing the fix.
Style: Speaker
When I received the mic I was pleasantly surprised at the quality for the price. Anyhow all was good until I plugged the mic into the radio. When I plugged it in the radio immediately went into transmit mode. Nothing I could do would make the radio receive - just transmit. I will admit that my frustration was enough that I almost just threw the mic away - but after ready some reviews others have had a flakey mic. So, I decided to take the mic apart to see if anything was obviously wrong. Well the attached picture shows the as-recieved condition of the mic contained almost non-existence solder joints. The worst was the PTT - go figure huh. Anyhow as shown in the pictures I re-soldered all the pads and put the mic back together. As I figured - I plugged the mic in and BAM - it has worked flawlessly. So for others that are having issue - open it up and you may have a very similar problem. ... show more

  • EDIT: 3.55mm Out Problem, Original review: "Standard Issue" Can Still be a Good Thing!
Style: Speaker
The media could not be loaded. EDIT: Perhaps I spoke too soon! It appears the 3.5mm out on the bottom of the speakermic is currently defective. I am seeking remediation and will update when the issue is resolved. When cabling is fully seated, it cuts the audio from the speakermic but does not pass the audio through down the 3.5mm out. If I leave it barely, partially inserted so that only one of the the 3 contact bands on the 3.5mm dongle connects, well it plays audio haphazardly through one of the audio channels but doesn't cut the speakermic so it then plays in both (or rather, 1.5 locations) and creates feedback. I plan to combine this device with headphones to use as a remote microphone so this functionality is critical for my purposes. This issue was recreated using multiple good cables that were also tested successfully with other devices, so the issue is certainly with the speakermic. By all accounts, this appears to be a legitimate and basic Baofeng handset/speaker-mic. The transmit has a positive click and (so-far) functions reliably and does the same functions as it would if you used the transmit button on the transceiver directly. It uses the Kenwood type connectors that will connect with the ubiquitous UV-5R. Received sound quality is good, but I haven't had any radio friends to test the transmit microphone yet, though I understand from other reviewers that it may need a bit of extra clearance or hole-cleanup from an craft knife. It has the 3.5mm adapter on the bottom that looks like it'll function, but is a little off-center. This lets you use the speaker-mic as just a mic and output the audio down the 3.5mm line to car stereos, headphones, or whatever else you'd like that uses that standard 3.mm aux input. No complaints yet for the price! Great for using your Baofeng for airsoft, in your vehicle, etc.. ... show more

  • Quality Check = NO BUENO
Style: Speaker
All Brand New used 1 time then all stopped working. Cheap interior parts just doesn’t describe how crappy these are. Seemed sturdy enough. Had gotten them for emergencies situations as we just had 18 inches of snow. Plugged them all the way in till it clicked, transmitted once didn’t receive reply then took out microphone and HT worked perfectly fine. Gave it another go on another radio and still same scenario. I tried all three I purchased and all of them did exactly the same. Sucks that I’m out of money due to the fact of return policy, guess I got what I paid for though. Lesson learned. It’s weird that I don’t have any issues with the Baofeng UV5R radios but the microphones need better quality parts to withstand at least more than 1 transmission. ... show more

  • A decent low-cost speaker/mic.
Style: Speaker
This shoulder speaker/mic is a decent choice for a Baofeng radio, if you want to save a buck. It has worked well enough for my BF-F8HP. However, the speaker sound quality is only mediocre and the microphone is fairly low quality (enough that there are various hacks out there to try to make it better). While communication is audible and understandable in good conditions, it gets poor when there's wind or other noise pollution. Using it for paragliding is not ideal due to wind obscuring much of the communication. I eventually upgraded to a BTECH QHM22, and am much happier using that. If you want a cheap option, this will fill the role fine and is fairly durable. But for a little more money, you could go with something like a QHM22 and get clearer comms. ... show more

  • Piece of junk
Style: Speaker
I've already returned this item. Right out of the gate all my reports of my voice was "under water sound", and "Degraded the ability of people to understand what I was saying". Not only that removing the product from my radio greatly increased my sounds and quality of my audio. I expected at the very least the quality similar to my BF 82HP. Not even close. This product is an embarrassment. Don't even waste your time buying it. Unless you want everyone to struggle to hear your voice. This should be pulled out of circulation. Clearly nobody could stand by a product that was this poorly manufactured. I did further research and found it was a common problem with this product. Do yourself a favor and get a high qualify speaker mic the price isnt that much different. People on the radio suggested I toss it out the window. I just returned it. Lucky me i didnt let it sit around or I may have had to throw it out of the window. ... show more
