Description

Backyard Kilns is a fully illustrated guide on Kiln Building. The Backyard Kiln, based on the brick kiln, has been tested in several locations, and has proved very efficient indeed, reaching very high temperatures, and capable of being fired both quickly and very slowly, and leaving a virtually ash-free firebox at the end!For the potter who likes to plough his or her own furrow, and who, although welcoming help from friends with firings, prefers not to have to rely on a team in order to get their work finished.Steve Mills’ designs for wood-fired kilns are now operating on four continents. All have been constructed and fired by one person in a day, a simple, efficient solution he was happy to share freely. He was internationally recognised as an authority on kiln construction and a range of pottery glazes he made from wood ash. Read more

  • I can’t wait to make one :)
In typical potter fashion it shows you the guide lines and typical pitfalls but requires that you take the plunge and try it out for yourself. A quick read and lots of inspiration.

Interesting little book, but not as helpful to building a kiln as a few others.

  • A basic set of easy-to-follow instructions for a couple of set up/take down again brick kilns.
this has some info useful to me, but ultimately it is not the design we are going to use. This is a rectangular kiln that needs angle Iron reinforcement. It is not intrinsically stable. My group is looking to build a small-scale medieval beehive kiln using local on-site materials as much as possible. ... show more

the kiln uses common materials and while most work up to more advanced (read as expensive) mayerials, this does show you what is possible. sometimes that's exactly what is needed.

  • Great book
Had all the info one could need for building a backyard kiln for doing larger metal work (like leaf-spring size for swords, etc.). Buy it if this is what you want to do but be aware, you may not be allowed to build one in your neighborhood. They are large and entirely made of brick without mortar.

  • Interesting!
An interesting book. Would love to build one of these kilns. Just need some open space away from neighbors though.
