  • Worthless gadget, especially for a smaller torch tip!
I bought this for chain making (20 ga. sterling silver). If you've ever made a chain you'll know it is a tedious task and I hoped to removed one step...picking up striker, lighting my 0 or 00 torch tip, putting down striker, etc.). But this was not my savior. It simply doesn't light the 0 or 00 torch tips. Seller when I complained it would not work for this eventually sent me this : "have checked with our warehouse manager and she has checked this out and says that because the 0 and 00 are a much smaller hole and more con-caved than the #1 tip so there may not be enough air getting into the tip for igniting." But although they agreed to take it back they were making me pay return shipping, and said if it wasn't defective they would subtract the shipping costs I paid to get it. So beware! Simply a gadget that wasn't worth the money....I was back to finishing the chain and igniting the torch with my striker. ... show more

  • Aside from shocking me and lack of instructions, it's fine.
Aside from shocking me and the trial and error trying to use it, it's fine. My Smith Little Torch only fits in the switch channel upside down, and at first it didn't seem to light that way, but for some reason lighting it that way works consistently now. Also, my soldering bench has a tin surface, so if I touch it or anything on it while trying to light the torch I get a shock. A cork pad under the unit solved that problem. Not that a shock from 2 AA batteries is life threatening, but it is annoying. And don't touch the switch with your finger or your handy soldering pick while you're trying to figure out how in the world you're going to use it, you'll get a shock from that too. That said, it is a great relief to my poor overused hands to use this rather than a standard flint torch lighter. I like the small footprint (the reason I chose this one). It is weighty so stays put when you're using it. It would be nice if came with rubber feet, an insulated switch, and a tiny piece of paper showing how to use it with a Little Torch. For some reason when I first tried it I couldn't make it light with the torch upside down so wasted time trying various 3-handed options that got the torch closer to the spark. I'm not sure why it's working now, perhaps I wasn't giving it enough gas at first having never used something like this before. A little diagram or photo on the box would have saved annoying trial and error. Just got it so can't comment on its durability. ... show more

  • Striker component can shift in transit! Easy fix!
Was not working at first!! It was striking but had very small sparks. Upon closer inspection I realized the white igniter had shifted during delivery. I applied a small amount of pressure with my finger to center it and push it down and further away from the “roof” to create larger static spikes. This helped my Smith Little Torch ignite. (Size 5 tip. Haven’t tried any of the others yet.) Works great. Nice heavy metallic case. ... show more

  • Should have bought it sooner...
I struggled with this purchase. I kept thinking "do I really need this??" But after years of fighting with my striker to get the jewelry torch lit, I caved and bought it. OMG! (sounds of kicking myself...why did I wait so long!) What a difference it makes! It worked the first time straight out of the box, and I no longer dread getting that torch going! It is small and stable on my soldering table. Incredibly easy to use. Just no downside to this new toy of mine! ... show more

  • This is such a handy tool for my silversmithing work ...
This is such a handy tool for my silversmithing work. It allows me to get a flame on my torch and have both hands free, one on the torch and the other on a piece of silver. Well worth the money.

  • Do not purchase for The Smiths Little Torch.
I’m very disappointed. I’ve tried lighting my Smith’s Little Torch several times, but have had no success. It arrived quickly. Now I’m using a candle. Since purchase, I did more research. Apparently it’s a challenge to use this product with little tips.

  • Works great
Works just fine. With my propane/oxygen torch you have to make sure that the tip of the torch is right up close to the spark. With a acetylene air torch it's less sensitive. Just be cautious that you don't turn up the fuel too much (as with any other lighter).

  • no go; refund not honored
would not light my smiths little torch. spark, as viewed in a dark closet, was very weak. I sent the unit back for a refund and now Amazon denies my claim. Do date, I am out $19.94 (purchase price) and the unit; in other words ripped off.
