  • So fun
This thing is amazing! It's going to save me so much on nursery pots. It's also, just really, really fun to use

  • I like the larger size...
I have been using something similar that makes much smaller blocks. It works pretty well, but the blocks seem a little small for starting my beet seeds which tend to start growing down the sides of the blocks. The larger blocks with deeper seed holes produced by this blocker should overcome that problem. Soil blocks are not meant for starting your tomatoes and peppers, but for fast growing plants that you would directly seed in your garden. By starting these in blocks you not only give them a better more cared for start, but you can better space them in your garden without having to thin out your row when the seeds come up too close together. You can find soil blocker formulas online, mostly adding nutrients to the base of 4 parts peat moss to 1 part compost, which was the recipe suggested for use with my original soil blocker. (I know people try to do this using coconut coir rather than peat moss, but it has been found by some to be too crumbly for the purpose.) This works best if the ingredients are finely sifted to remove clumps, around which the blocks could break down. As the plants grow, you can simply use a foliar fertilizer spray for nourishment, if you'd like, though I think they can get enough out of the compost in the short amount of time between sprouting and being moved into the garden. ... show more

  • Good Enough For the Home Gardener
I started using soil blocks a few years ago with an old rusty soil block maker a friend handed down to me. It worked well enough but it was starting to bind up due to years of use. Overall, I'm pretty happy with this version though, as others have said, it does take a bit of "warming up" to get it sliding smoothly. I do feel like the unit suffers from a weak spring. Even my old decades old version pops right back up when released. This one is sluggish and often gets stuck half way, you have to help it out and pull it up a bit to get it back into the starting position. That isn't a big deal if you are just doing a couple of trays of soil blocks, but it would be a pain if you are doing a higher volume at regular intervals. So I would say if you are just curious to try soil blocks, this is a good way to test them out and see if you like them. But if you plan to be cranking out lots of soil blocks throughout the growing season, you may want to spend the extra money to get a better version. ... show more

  • Half the price of the name brand soil blocker
I was so happy when I saw this for under $20! The last soil blocker I purchased cost nearly $50. This soil blocker is more comfortable to use than the expensive one. It takes a little bit of practice to efficiently use a soil blocker, but it is well worth the savings. This tool can give you a good forearm workout if you use it too much. I am not sure if this company offers different sized soil blockers but they are available here on Amazon with a simple search. There is actually a series of these things. They range in size from 1" blockers up to 4" blockers. They are designed to be like those Russian nesting dolls you may have played with when you were a kid. It is a REALLY AWESOME way to start your plants. As your starts get too big for the 1" block, you just set it in the square hole in the middle of the 2" blocks, so on and so forth. This product saves a ton of space because you don't have to use all those plastic pots. These soil blocks take up less space because they fit perfectly together, whereas you usually have wasted space between traditional pots. I would highly recommend this product. ... show more

  • Bad design
The plunger goes too far in and the part that pushes the soil out pops out of the mold causing it to get stuck until you push it back into place. The coating on the metal makes it very difficult to push it in to start with. Not recommended.

  • Could be great, possibly received defective product
The media could not be loaded. For context, I use soil blocks on my farm to start tens of thousands of seedlings every year. Normally I use the Ladbrooke commercial stand-up soil blockers, in the 2" size and 1-1/8" sizes. I'm no stranger to using these tools, and have a good feel for how the OG soil blockers should operate. While I have used these stand up soil blockers exclusively for years, I decided it was time to get something I could make small batches of blocks for specialty crops for certain customers who want some novel vegetables in their gardens. Plus, I started to throw out my back way more than I should for a healthy 36-year old, so something I can use sitting down sounded very appealing. Aside from the smaller quantity of block making, and the ability to sit down while using this blocker, I do really like the powder coated layer. After years of use, my commercial blockers have started to develop a bit of rust, and a coating would help to prevent this. This soil blocker feels like it's make out of nice heavy metal, and I don't think it will bend on me. However that brings me to the downsides of this blocker, at least the one I received. It looks like the factory angles/bends of the metal plates might have been a bit off. The plate that extends vertically from the top of the block forms at a slight diagonal, as well as the plate above that vertical one, that forms a near right angle and has the threaded hole to screw the handle into, were not bent to line up properly with the handle, which you have to screw into that threaded hole. I noticed this when I got it and was about to assemble, so I tried my hardest to align the threaded hole and the handle properly, but because of that heavy gauge metal, I could not get it to line up properly. After a bit of struggle, I figured, hell, maybe I'm just imagining things...I'm fallible and this blocker seems to me machined very well. So I went for it...and sure enough the handle had a lot of trouble screwing into the threaded hole...felt like things were not aligned properly. But, who knows, maybe it's a nylon coated thread, so that it locks in and prevent the handle from rotating. Well, no. The compression plates and the block frames are off - one side of the compression plates rubs against the frame, making a horrible noise and you can feel the resistance. It will probably still work (I won't start seeds of this size until late February), but I think soil will probably be gushing out of that larger-on-one-side gap. And my ears won't be happy. So unfortunately I have to assume that I received a defective product. Just be careful if you purchase this, and maybe return it if you think you might be running into the same misalignment issue. This could be a really great tool, and it's a pretty affordable option. I doubt all of these blockers have the same issue. ... show more
