Not so impressed by the sound. Premium construction. Returned.

  • Excellent
It's really heavy, but I want to say that its sound performance is very good too. It's at the same level as HD800s I think, and much better than my hifiman edxV2.

  • Honest thoughts about the Audeze LCD-X
I'm going to list all the pluses and then the minuses I'll let you decide if it's fair . I really enjoy the lay back sound of the LCD-X . It has a very pleasant sound, good bass and very clean treble . It's leans toward enjoyment over detail and accuracy . It allows you to use very common affordable solid state amplifiers . Very low impedance is aligned perfectly with Equipment like Schiit audio that performs extremely well at 16-30 ohms . Case is a huge plus I highly recommend it . Pads are plush and comfortable headband is very comfortable weight for me seems good but it is heavy . cord is also very nice . I rate the looks 5 out of 5 stars I rate sound 5 out of five stars I rate comfort 5 out of 5 stars I rate compatible with most common amplifiers and dacs 5 out of 5 stars I rate Knowing what side is what 5 out of 5 stars I now rate the minuses Since it is very low impedance you may not have too many tube amp choices . Reliability worst in class I had a driver go out which I had not experienced since the first few series . I got the typical send it back and we'll take a look . Once again they claimed the damage was not their fault . I was given the option of repairing them out of pocket a stock for almost the full cost of the headphone or B stock which was 600.00 . If you have done your research then you will know this is a common problem and the warranty is written such that it leaves them deciding coverage . I mean what are your options File a suit in small claims court in California ? Out of the 8 pairs of audeze headphones I own 3 have failed for the exact same reason reliability 1 star warranty 1 star customer support 1 star Out of warranty costs 1 star ... show more

  • They were beautiful. The lambskin pads were not as soft as ...
I got these straight from Audeze. I heard the buzz. I already owned the LCD-2, so I auditioned the LCD-2c. When I heard I could do the same here, I was jazzed. They came quickly. They were beautiful. The lambskin pads were not as soft as the ones on the LCD-2c but they were still nice, if a bit firm by comparison. The leather headband wasn't as comfortable as the minimalist one on the LCD-2c but this stuff softens up with use. These cans are heavy and the vice-like grip is a pain. Lots of crazy pressure. But they loosen up over time. You can bend the headband to expedite the process but they naturally adjust over time to the pressure you feed them when you wear them. I love the black. I love the cord. I no longer pine for wood. Black does it for me. I didn't like the sound when I first got them. It was much more aggressive than the LCD-2 or the LCD-2c. My early impression was that I wasn't missing anything, that Audeze had gone in the wrong direction. I intended to send them back. Then I had that "oh my God" moment. One if my early impressions was that the mids were a little high, a little too present, maybe unnaturally so. But then I was listening to Rush's "Fly by Night," and I heard the echo, a bit of air that just seemed to float and then evaporate. I could hear the hum of the unstrummed strings off the amp, not a feedback whine, more a kind of electronic breath as the amp waited for input. It blew me away. I went back through 60 years music. I could not get myself to go to bed. I was up so late I went to work the next day on two hours' sleep. I own a lot of headphones - the PS500e, modded SR60s, DT770, the DT-1990, the HE 400i, the beloved HD800 and two other LCDs. Not until this moment had I heard a headphone that grabbed me like these. Yes, the bass is lush and yummy but it's a combination of clarity and some je ne sais quoi that grabbed me by the nethers. Even the other LCDs didn't have quite this effect. After continued use, however, I found the veil to be annoying. I had brighter cans that reminded me of how much I actually liked that sizzle of treble so many seem to avoid like the plague. The rolled-off treble - common to Audeze LCDs - really began to bother me. It was worse on this can than on the others. How could the mids be so revealing but the treble so boring? I took the grills off. On the other models, doing so would allow me to remove a pair of black foam circular pads. Doing so lifted the veil on those. Here, the foam is more like a felt and it's glued to the grill. I didn't dare peel it off so I drove these cans without the grills. Wow! I lost some bass thump. No big loss. These cans do bass standing on their head. But the filter removal opened up the high end. The treble is still rolled off but the space and clarity are amazing, so much closer to the HD800 but far more engaging. Again, I went through 60 years of music and spent hours just making love to every song I'd ever remembered. These cans are amazing. The amount of detail is absolutely frightening. It makes me want to figure out how to afford the LCD-4. I can't believe these cans are this good. So, wrap-up: heavy, initially painful vice grip, expensive, not as relaxing as the LCD-2. But if you break them in, I don't know if it's burn-in or your own internal processing, but once these babies grab you, it's hard to break free - especially if you remove that grill cloth that veils the presentation. At the risk of coming across as crass, I'll just say it: Once you go black, you never go back. P.S. I found Audeze's customer service friendly and professional. They get busy, so e-mail isn't super fast but talking to them by phone is a joy. These are decent, reasonable professionals. Their cans are pricey but worth it. ... show more

  • Incredible, incredible audio quality, but the headphones are so heavy the headband prevents extended listening sessions
Updated Feb 9, 2018: Audeze reached out to me and suggested extended yoke rods. It made them more comfortable, but more importantly the company showed interest in me even after I purchased their product. Excellent product for an excellent company that provides excellent support! I purchased these from Audeze directly during one of their sales a few months ago. The audio quality on these is 10 stars, just incredible quality. I have no issues with the audio or quality of audio from these headphones. I'd read so many times these were heavy headphones and didn't think anything of it. These really are heavy headphones, which means they put a LOT of pressure on the top of your head. The padding is very minimal on the headband, so I can not use these for extended listening sessions anymore. I loved the headphones so much that I kept wanting to hear what details I'd been missing from other songs, so even though the top of my head was hurting from the weight of these, the audio quality kept me from putting them up. After the 3rd day I had to switch back to my HD650 headphones because of the pain. While I was frustrated having to switch back temporarily, I was amazed at all the details the HD650 missed. Currently I'm trying to figure out how to make these more comfortable and have a hideous mix of foam and padding wrapped around the headband that makes it slightly more comfortable, but I still can't listen to the headphones longer than 30 minutes without getting a headache from the headband. If anyone knows of a solution please share it here. ... show more
