The reviews on here turned me off to buying this but after searching for something else with this much storage I couldn't find anything better for the price. Personally, I don't get the negative reviews on here. If everything you assemble is done with brute force and you don't know your own strength, don't destroy the thing and then complain that it's the items fault when you were the one that couldn't put it together as other people are without issue. If you are buying this, I assume you are like me in that you value physical copies of media more so than digital and you are proud of your collection and want to display like Blockbuster Entertainment. So take your time! I assembled this with one ratchet screw driver. I'm a skinny 150 lbs and I put this together by myself and had very little issues with it if you use common sense. The instructions are not poorly written as stated here if you know how to read. You don't need a masters degree in carpentry to assemble a simple "Ikea" like piece of furniture. In fact, I barely used the instructions other than as a reference for where the pieces went. You pretty much use the same screws for everything. Here are some tips to make things go smooth. 1. Take your time and work carefully with the pieces. There are no additional parts, so if you lose something you are just out of luck. If you scratch, chip or break anything then it's your own fault, as I only had one chip in the back bottom of shelf due to my own doing described below. 2. Don't use power tools to assemble it if you don't understand how to use them properly because you can't feel how much torque you are stressing the wood with if you are not the one doing the torque. 3. When trying to figure out which orientation the pieces should go, put the unfinished edge to the floor. Use the sunk in screw holes as an indicator of which side the screw should go in and thus which orientation it needs to fit together. The flat holes should touch the piece they screw into. The sunken holes are where you insert the screws. 4. Use a ratchet screwdriver or regular one. Don't screw it in as fast as you can, it's not a race! If you hear creaking, continue but turn slowly while feeling the sides where the screw goes in for any bulges. If you feel one stop as you are going to crack it. All of the pieces should be able to go together so there is no gap in them. I did hear creaking on the first half of the assembly that worried me, but I took my time allowing the wood to flex turning the screw slowly until the pieces touched and I have no damage. 5. You should be able to assemble the two halves with no help. Then take the bottom half to where you want to place it at. Put it up against the wall and then very carefully place the top half against the wall and slowly lower it into place. The cam screws should not be difficult to lock into place if you put them in correctly with the gap facing up. 6. IMPORTANT! This is the step where most people will struggle the most. Once you get the two halves together, carefully walk the shelf around so the front is facing the wall. It will not be stable until you put the back panels on. Start by lining up one bottom corner with the edge. Make sure the bottom and the side are completely flush before screwing in the corner. It probably won't be flush sitting against the floor as I made the mistake of doing. It will crack the wood. If it's flush with the bottom of the shelf and side, the screw will go in with no cracks. Once you get the first corner do the same on the opposite bottom side. Then do the top two corners. If done properly everything else up until the top will align correctly. 7. My only compliant here is I wish they had pre-drilled the holes for the back panel. You can completely put these on by yourself however. Sit beside the panel and use your body to hold it in place, unless you are very heavy. Use one hand to hold the corner flush so it doesn't move. You can hold the screw and screwdriver with the other if you are dexterous. The screw will go all over the place if you rush it. Line it up slowly and turn with very light pressure. After several turns it will catch grip and start to go in. If you put too much pressure on it you will just turn it sideways and drop the screw while likely punching the panel with the screwdriver. You can also use a counter punch tool or drill to pre-drill the holes if you need to. I would not lay this on the floor because the bottom has a wider lip that sticks out and if you put weight on the shelf while on the floor it could break in the middle. 8. As you work the panels up, place them flush to each other and to the side of the shelf so it keeps the shelf squared. Again use your body to hold it against the shelf. As you start to stand up and get higher, you can lean the shelf against the wall and use light body pressure to hold the panel in place. It will rest against the lip of the panel below it. For the second panel upwards, start with the top two corners when adding screws. This will align things and after the second screw you don't need to hold it up any longer. 9. If you have long arms you can easily reach around inside the shelf and put your fingers on either side of the wood while you are screwing. If you feel either side start to bulge then you don't have things aligned properly or the screw is going in sideways. After I fixed the first bottom corner flush I had no issues at all with the rest of the panels going on, other than it being a pretty slow process. 10. IMPORTANT! For the top panel, do NOT line it up flush with the one below it. This will cause you to crack the top of the shelf because the screw will be too low to go in the center of the wood. For this do the same as you did at the bottom. Alight the panel flush with the top and sides. You can let one side rest on the lip of the bottom one. Once you get the screw in, do the same for the other side. You will have a gap in the panels as you can see in my photo but it's not visible and keeps the screws going into the center of the wood so it doesn't break anything. Now that it's together you can flip it back around and dust off all the foam pieces. Depending on your floor you may need the wall anchor mounts. You can look at the shelf and see which direction it tends to lean. If backwards you should be fine without them. I have carpeting and didn't need them. I started by placing big box sets on the top of the entire thing, then worked my way down. I never had the shelf lean or come forward. Everything fit just fine with the exception of the middle shelf. This is an issue I've seen even with the Walmart shelves I have that I'm replacing. For some reason they leave this smaller shelf in that doesn't fit things well. With everything on it and it leaning back against the wall it's pretty sturdy and I don't see it going anywhere. It's not as sturdy as the Walmart shelves but works much better and can fit about 3-4 of the Walmart shelves in about 1/3 of the space. My only complaints are I wish the holes were pre-drilled, that there wasn't that tiny shelf in the middle and I wished the shelf depth was the same width as game or movie cases. They stick out slight over it but it's not a deal breaker. My biggest complaint is that I feel for the quality of it this should be cheaper. The Walmart ones I believe were $30 so I can see myself paying twice as much since it's about twice as big. I am definitely happy with my purchase and will be picking up 4 more as these are huge savers of space. I've taken one wall worth of videos and have them almost all fitting on one shelf, leaving me plenty of space to expand.

I bought one of these units as a test to see if it was easy to assemble and if it would suit my needs. Satisfied with the first one, I then immediately purchased and assembled 3 more. I am using these shelves to display my Dungeons and Dragons miniatures. The unit shipped in an outer plain cardboard box and the inner product box. The parts were well packed and cushioned by Styrofoam and thinner linings. No piece was damaged at all in any of the 4 shipments...a testament to how well they are packed. The unit consists mainly of painted pressed wood shelves and frames and a thick, decorated cardboard backing. Assembling the unit was pretty easy. The instructions are not perfect, but they are very easy to read and the pieces are clearly labelled. The only thing you really need to watch out for is which end of each piece is towards the rear of the unit (answer: the unpainted edge). Having put together similar furniture before, assembly was pretty much a breeze. However, if you are not familiar with cam screws and cam nuts, you may find yourself at a loss because the instructions assume you know how to use them. The key is to screw the cam screws into the threaded plastic holes first and then slide the protruding nubs into the other piece of the unit before turning the cams to lock them into place. The holes were all drilled and lined up well, so that I had no problem fitting and screwing the pieces together. The screws were well-made and never stripped. There are a couple of other assembly caveats: #1) The backing for the unit has holes for the screws, but the wood of the unit does not, meaning you have to take some care to properly line up the decorative cardboard backing before screwing them in place or you may find the backing askew and protruding out past the edge of the unit. This is not hard to manage (especially if someone is helping you), but it is something to keep in mind. #2) One of the backing pieces (piece "M") has a right way and a wrong way to place it, but this is not indicated in the instructions. Basically, if piece M is placed one way, the folding seams in the cardboard will be visible between the unit shelves. If the piece is turned upside down, the seams will coincide with the shelves and not be visible from the front. #3) THIS IS THE BIGGEST ISSUE WITH THIS UNIT. The unit is assembled in two halves (top and bottom). The two halves are connected by four tiny wooden dowels and 4 cam screws. The result is that the connection between the two halves is VERY fragile. It cannot, for example, support its own weight if the unit is leaned against a wall at a 45 degree angle. Similarly, if you attempt to lift up the whole unit from a horizontal position after joining the two halves, unless you do it very carefully and hold it at the joint between the two halves, the unit will break in two. If you simply lift the top shelf of the unit from the floor and attempt to pivot it to stand up, you will hear cracking sounds and end up with the top half in your hand and the bottom half back on the floor and damage to the shelf where the two halves are joined. #3 sounds bad, but it is only an issue when you are assembling the unit. Once the backing is in place, it helps stabilize the unit. The joint between the two halves is still ALWAYS going to be the weakest part of the unit, so avoid unnecessary torque to it. Assembly took me about an hour and a half the first time. By the fourth one, I could do it, by myself, in about 45 minutes. In any event, once assembled and standing, the piece is surprisingly solid and stable, and they all tend to lean backwards, meaning if you are not putting heavy things on it or breakable things on it and you don't have pets or kids climbing them, you don't have to anchor them to the wall with the included anchor kit. Since all I have are plastic miniature figures on them, my kids are grown, and my cat isn't allowed in that room, I elected to not anchor them to the wall. TL;DR: If you are careful with the joint between the two halves of the unit, these are great.
