  • Great laptop, couple easy to overcome limitations
This is the first laptop I've ever bought, not sure my Asus EeePC counts. I've used Dell and HP laptops at work for years. I was looking for the best bang for the buck. Construction: very nice and solid. The materials chosen aren't premium, but, the overall feel of the unit doesn't feel cheap. The body is solid, so is the hinge. Keyboard: I'll admit, I was a little concerned about the keyboard not being full sized - unwarranted. Getting used to the scrunched up number pad is far better than not having one. The keyboard overall has a good feel to it. Some reviews made mention of the backlighting making the keys tough to see in certain lighting. While that's true, the backlighting is adjustable, and can be turned off. Screen: Some reviews made complaints about the screen not being IPS. Again, not an issue for me. I'm not trying to view it from crazy angles. The display is crisp and colorful, and so far very easy to read. Using Krita and Photoshop, the display is very nice looking. Drive configuration: the 256gb SSD is fast, but small. I ordered mine with a 1tb additional drive, and use it to install programs and for data. Ryzen 5 3500 and Vega graphics: the Ryzen 5 is a very good performing midrange processor. I've yet to actually slow it down. My last work laptop was and HP with an i7, and this Asus with the R5 would easily run right with it. Games: I'm not a gamer so I cannot say how well it plays games. Any games. Ports: This VivoBook has several USB A ports, audio jack, one USB C and an HDMI port. I wasn't happy about the LAN port not being on this laptop. So I got a USB C expansion dock, problem solved. Overall, I'm very happy. The only thing I'd change is adding more RAM, and I will do that shortly. This is a very nice laptop at a good price. ... show more

  • EXCELLENT Computer for the Cost
I LOVE THIS COMPUTER! I have owned somewhere close to a dozen laptops in my life, and this is the best I have owned. For the $580 I paid, I got a bargain and a half in a quick, great looking, very functional laptop. Pros: - Backlit keyboard - great for low-light conditions. - 15.6" screen - bright and clear without pushing the specs. Wide field of view as well. - Ryzen 5 processor - overkill for anything other than games, and better performance than equivalent Intel - Light!! This baby is as light as my last 14" laptop, with MUCH better specs - Everything worked from the first power-on - no problems with ANYTHING! (Including the touchpad) - Available in a variety of colors - glad I had a choice! - NO FINGERPRINTS! The screen and case do not show any telltale signs of recent use - M.2 primary drive - fast, heat-efficient, and relatively inexpensive (see below) - USB C connector - works lightning fast - Fingerprint sensor!! NO MORE TYPING LONG PASSWORDS to get into Windows!! It works fairly well, although on a few occasions, it's taken a few seconds to recognize my finger. Cons - For my use, the original 128Gb M.2 SSD was not sufficient. Replaced it with a $30 256Gb M.2 SSD. Other thoughts - Not a gaming machine - at this price, you should be ashamed to ask a machine to do such things! Seriously, this machine will do live streaming and photo and video editing without breaking a sweat, but it's not designed for anything more serious than solitaire as far as games go. - Swapping in a different M.2 drive was simple. I purchased an external M.2 SATA enclosure, used Macrium Reflect (free app) to clone the original in a few minutes. The cover comes off easily by removing a few screws, popping the clips (use plastic tools!) and the M.2 location is right there. It took me less than an hour for the entire process, and I was doing other things at the time. - If you really don't like the touchpad, an external wireless mouse is an inexpensive, quick, and easy solution. - It took a little adjustment for me to get used to the delete key location - my previous laptop had the delete key in the same location as the power key on this one. I've turned off my computer unexpectedly several times. However, it comes back on instantly, so I don't lose anything other than a few seconds of my time. - I've owned laptops since 1989, and this one outshines anything else I've owned by a fair piece, for a MUCH better price! I love it, and I'd buy it again without any hesitation. I WILL recommend this to my friends. ... show more

  • Battery dies quick
Good laptop and AMD processor. I opened it to upgrade the RAM and was confused because I only saw one 4GB stick. I did some research and apparently there is onboard 4GB already installed. You can add to that and it doesn't need to match, so I installed an 8GB stick and it's working very fast with 12GB. The battery kind of sucks - dies in about 2 hours. ... show more

  • Beautiful laptop, good price -*beware of screen defect*
This laptop is beautiful and worth the price; nice backlit keyboard, comfortable design, and large screen display. The unfortunate issue I experienced were small, flickering horizontal lines on the screen. Asus provided 3 troubleshooting techniques but none resolved the issue. I spoke with a geek squad tech who said it's most likely a screen defect and to return it and get a new one since it's brand new and under warranty. I ordered another one and received it today, it's working perfectly! Here's a tip: if Amazon offers you a partial credit DON'T TAKE IT, it will void your option of ever getting a replacement. Ask for a new item to be shipped out immediately and return the defective item. ... show more

  • Good for day to day tasks
I bought this laptop primarily for school although I have been able to accomplish some light gaming on it. This computer is definitely not cutting edge or super impressive. The screen is pretty nice and overall the computer functions quite well. The build quality is ok at best and I have gotten a lot of scratches on the top of the plastic lid. The screen and hinge are also a little flimsy and require two hands to open it. With the ssd it starts up quickly and is able to accomplish all my regular daily tasks. However the keyboard on this laptop is terrible in my opinion and since I have to type quite often I have found that using the computer in general had become a displeasure just because of the keyboard. I would say that if you're looking for a light school work laptop or internet surfer this would do you quite well. Trying to do long periods of work or any kind of serious gaming is absolutely frustrating though. ... show more
