Alright, so I just wanted to write a review for this product, because I don't think there any other one. First things first - I LOVE this computer. To put it blatantly, it gets the job done, and it does it well! To those who might expect a laptop that will be able to play every game currently avaliable at 120, you'll be dissapointed. To put it into perspective, I can play Modern Warfare 2019 at 60 FPS on high settings with ray tracing. For Cold War, I can play it at 40-50 on high settings without ray tracing (As of writing this on 11/27/2020, the game only being out for little more than a week, that's probably subject to change) But just about any game before that, you can expect modest to great results depending on which game. My only 2 complaints about it, is the battery life, and storage space. Since it is a laptop, it can get pretty hard to try and cram as much battery life into it without sacrificing space for other components. But, that isn't the case with this one. You almost ALWAYS have to have it plugged in when doing anything on it. I can get about 4-5 hours of just regular usage (like browsing and watching YouTube, typing word documents, ect) But if you want to play a game on this, you HAVE TO play it plugged in. It doesn't inconvenience me personally, but I know for other people it might be a different story. Second complaint is how little 512GB SSD feels when you actually use it. For example, for just about any AAA game, expect to use up about 100-200GB of space - PER GAME. So either you are going to have to only have about 2-3 AAA games all at once, or only have 1-2 AAA games, and some other indie games. Other than that, this is a SOLID package. This is my first computer I've ever owned, and safe to say this is a great starting point for those who want to get introduced into gaming on a computer, without dropping 2000-3000 on a PC, moniter, mouse and keyboard, ect. TLDR: It gets the job done well enough. 4-5 hours of regular usage, HAVE TO leave it plugged in to game without it dying on you quickly. You have about 490Gb of usuable space, not counting the fact that it's an SSD, which means you have to leave a portion of it unused for it to be efficient. Other than that, great introduction into PC gaming world without having to spend life's savings on a killer PC.

I bought this laptop for my girlfriend because she just started her college classes and she needed something to use for school and light gaming. She plays fall guys right now and some call of duty and let me tell you the rtx 2060 in there is awesome. I personally bought the acer predator helios 300 it has a better processor (intel) and it's the same price, 999, at least at the time of buying it. This laptop is insane for things besides editing though, the processor is a beast. I would definitely buy this laptop if you're thinking about it. If it's less than 1200 dollars.

It's a good gaming laptop, if your expectations are reasonable. Far too many people want to play GTA V with ultra settings at 120 FPS, with the laptop staying at a cool 30 degrees Celsius. That won't happen. You will, however, 90% of PC games in the market right now at high/very high settings with a decent FPS. There is no way to keep the laptop cool while playing, but it handles the heat pretty well and you don't get stutters or performance issues even after playing demanding games for multiple hours. Don't expect to play anything on your lap (ironic, i Know), both for the sake of your skin and the laptop itself. The one actual issue with it is poor battery life. I haven't once gamed on the battery because I want max performance, but when I leave it to download something even for a few hours (while it runs in silent mode) I always find it dead, even if the download only took a few hours. It seems you can't get more than 3-4 hours of the battery at any level of use. ADDING ONTO MY REVIEW AFTER 2.5 YEARS Still solid, still runs great, but there are three issues: Battery life is now poor. I'm lucky to get an hour of video playback even with power saving on. CPU throttling is a major issue. You'll know you have throttling if you experience micro-stutters when playing games or major stutters when the game is demanding. This requires careful maintenance to clear dust from your machine and keep things running optimally. However, there is a final solution to this problem with 3 steps: 1. Replace the thermal paste on your Mboard. This is a slightly complicated process, but if you have any experience maintaining hardware, it will be easy for you. There are plenty of guides on Youtube, however, if you have the FX505-DV, you should know that none of the guides inform you that the cables connecting the Audio chipset to your Mboard run over your heatsink. You need to disconnect this very carefully, because it can be difficult to reconnect and is easy to damage. 2. Use a decent cooling pad. 3. Use the Nvidia Image Scaling option. It is fantastic and comes at a minor cost to graphics quality. Take these 3 steps and you will no longer experience any throttling, but the regular maintenance to clear dust is advisable.

Please save yourself the trouble and look somewhere else for a gaming laptop. I bought this laptop in 2021 and from the moment I got it all the way to present day (2023), I've experienced numerous issues with it. Right out of the box, I had problems with the WiFi where it just wouldn't connect automatically to my internet. Every time, I'd have to connect it manually on startup, or it wouldn't recognize any networks in the listing, so I'd have to restart the system multiple times until I'd get the networks to show up. At one point it magically fixed itself, but then I'd always get that sporadic moment when it would fail to recognize and automatically connect to the WiFi. Then, there was the problem where, on startup, it wouldn't recognize the battery. It wouldn't show the battery icon either, so I'd have to keep restarting the system until the battery icon would appear. There sometimes seemed to be some kind of competition between the battery and the WiFi during this issue. One or the other just wouldn't show up, so that was a battle that tested my patience. Now, I have an issue with what seems to be the fans. The most graphically intense game I play is Elder Scrolls Online, and sometimes, when the fans speed up it makes the most horrible grindy, clanky sound ever. When I researched this problem, many of the suggestions stated that the fans needed cleaning, which I did and it helped somewhat (only with the help of turning my graphics settings in ESO all the way to low). But only after 2 months, the problem has resurfaced, which makes me believe that it's not the fans needing to be cleaned, but something else with the hardware. I'm absolutely tired of this laptop now. It's only been 2 years, and I've had more trouble with this thing than any other gaming laptop I've had before it. And it seems that I'm not the only one who's had the same issues with this exact laptop. The product is faulty. Mine was problematic from the very beginning. Please don't put yourself through the same heartache. Look elsewhere.

TLDR: If all you have is $1000 for a laptop and you want good gaming performance, this is definitely one of the better options available. But, if you have up to $1200 or if you're planning to immediately do some upgrades (RAM and storage), I'd recommend you look at one of the options that combines the Ryzen 7 4800HS with the RTX 2060 for a similar price point (one of the Lenovo Legions and another brand just came out with some options). There's a lot that I love about this laptop, but there are a lot of little things that add up to make me think I should have kept looking for a few days to find something with both the Ryzen 7 4800HS and the RTX 2060. I'll cover the negatives first because, if these aren't major issues for you, this laptop is honestly pretty great. Cons: - Touchpad - It took me a couple days of use to really notice, but the one thing that absolutely drives me crazy about this laptop is the unreliability and poor responsiveness of the touchpad. Most of the time it works as it normally should, and it feels great to use (no annoying texture that irritates your fingers while using it). But very randomly you'll go to move the mouse and your finger will slide around with no mouse response. It's not an issue of pressure or speed, I've tried switching up how I use it without any change, and it happens roughly once every hour or 2. If you're planning on using an external mouse, then you'll be fine. But I like to use the touchpad when I'm not using the laptop for games, and this is just subtly annoying enough to drive me crazy. - RAM - One of the main reasons I chose this laptop was because the seller posted in the Q&A section that this laptop ships with 1 16GB RAM card and 1 empty slot. It actually ships with 2 8GB RAM cards, which meant I had to order 32GB of RAM instead of 16GB to do an initial upgrade. This in itself is not a major issue, but it led to me spending more money than I anticipated. For that amount of money, I'd recommend just going for another option that combines the Ryzen 7 4800HS and the RTX 2060, and upgrading your RAM a few weeks or a month later. You'll get similar performance immediately, even if the other option only comes with 8GB of RAM, and a significant improvement once you can upgrade the RAM. You'll also get another year or 2 of future proofing compared to this laptop. - Linux - Another big reason I went with this option was because ASUS mentioned in the Q&A that this device will work out of the box with a Linux installation without any issues. That's not true, this devices ships with a Realtek rtl8822CE Wi-Fi chip. If you have ever tried to install Linux on a laptop, you know Realtek Wi-Fi chips are notorious for not working with Linux unless you install community developed drivers. I was able to find to find the fix very quickly since I've run into this issue several times and I was looking for it, but if you're new to Linux this would be a nightmare that could easily take hours or days to find out how to fix. For those interested, the quickest solution is to do a full upgrade of the distro after installation, update the Linux firmware, and then download the Synaptic Package Manager and search for rtl8822ce. Download the package that comes up, restart your device, and you should see your Wi-Fi is working. - Charger - This is a minor issue, but it could be a bigger issue for anyone planning to move around with this laptop: The power cord that plugs into the power brick needs to sit just right to maintain a connection with the power brick. For me it didn't require much propping up, but if you touch that part of the power cord wrong it interrupts the power supply and charging of the laptop. - Battery life - Somewhat related to the above issue, this laptop only gets 2hrs of battery life. And that's when you're not playing any games. If you're a student trust me, look for an option with a better battery life because this will constantly die on you in class, especially if you have to deal with the power cord issue above. If you plan on just using this around the house, it's probably not a big deal to worry about. - Fans - This should be somewhat expected since it's a gaming laptop, but God are these fans loud. You'll need headphones if you want to hear your games while playing, and you'll probably annoy anyone in the same room as you who doesn't have headphones on. The fans are much quieter when not gaming, but they would still be noticeable in a classroom since they almost never stop. - Keyboard - This isn't a big issue for me, but I thought I'd include it in case anyone was worried about it: There is noticeable keyboard flex when typing. I'm pretty careful with my stuff (I've never broken a phone screen, or almost any piece of technology), so this isn't because I'm slamming my fingers on the keys. It hasn't interrupted my typing or caused any issues, but it might be an issue for others. Pro's - Simple to upgrade - Once you can get your laptop open (save yourself some pain and get a pry tool, getting the plastic backing off is pretty tough the first few times), it is very simple to swap out the RAM and add a 2.5" SSD. The laptop comes with screws and a docking bay (internal) for an SSD, so there's no installation hassles. This definitely adds a lot of value to the laptop because you can immediately add some future proofing. - Great gaming performance - Now, I'm not a huge gamer and I don't typically play FPS type games on PC. But I did test this laptop out on a few games and got performance I really wasn't expecting. I'd expect most games to run smoothly with mostly high settings. I did run a few 3D Mark Time Spy tests on it, and got pretty good scores (5,568 was the best overall score with 6,214 for GPU and 3,504 for CPU). If this is at the top of your budget range, you won't be disappointed with how it plays. - Easy to change performance modes - It comes pre-installed with ASUS Armoury Crate which allows you to easily change the performance level of the device. I primarily use this to lower the fan level when I'm not playing a game. - High quality display - The display is just 1080p, but with a 15" screen it looks great. 4K and 2K screens are nice, but they only become noticeable in their improved quality on larger screen sizes. The refresh rate (Hz) is what you really want to look out for on these types of devices. There are other options with 144Hz instead of the 120Hz covered here, but with the GPU and CPU in this device you'll be hovering between 60-80 fps for most games and around 50 fps for the most intense games. A 144Hz display would just be a waste of your money at those rates and could likely be spent on better features (like the RTX 2060 GPU that's included here). Overall, the display fits the performance you'll see and that allows ASUS to give you a better GPU. Overall, this is a great device if this is the top of your budget range. If you are interested in any of the things I nit-picked above, or if you can afford to spend closer to $1200, I would highly recommend another device and preferably one that combines the Ryzen 7 4800HS with the RTX 2060.
