This is an update, if you decide to buy this computer make sure you buy a cloner device and a 2 TB (or greater) M.2 NVME SSD. I got in trouble with an update which was taking too long, so I thought something was wrong and turned off the computer, bad mistake, this happened on my 2TB SSD, so I popped in the 1 TB it came with, and it was all good again. I have two Windows 11 USB boot drives that did not help at all even though I selected to boot from USB in BIOS. I couldn't believe how many bad reviews this laptop had, so after reading the good ones, I decided to purchase it. This is the first laptop I've seen that requires a bunch of updates before you start using it even though it's new. Some updates are critical, like the BIOS firmware update. They tell you in the instructions to use the MyAsus app to do all of these updates, the other ones are done through the MS store. So, if you don't like messing with computers and installing a bunch of updates, don't buy this laptop. If you decide to buy it read all the instructions even before you turn it on. ... show more

    • Liquid Metal in a Laptop: A Preventable Failure

I experienced repeated instant shutdowns and initially suspected a BIOS issue or a problem with ASUS Armoury Crate. Neither was the cause. The real issue turned out to be CPU thermals. This laptop uses liquid metal (LM) as the thermal interface, and that proved to be the failure point, almost exactly at the end of the warranty period. Upon inspection, the liquid metal had migrated away from the die, severely compromising thermal transfer. The attached image clearly shows the issue. I replaced the liquid metal with a Thermal Grizzly KryoSheet on the CPU and serviced the GPU while I had the system open. Since then, the laptop has been running well within specifications and has been completely stable. This is otherwise an excellent piece of hardware. The display is gorgeous, performance is strong, and it easily handles everything I throw at it. I’m genuinely glad to have it back in service. That said, ASUS needs to seriously reconsider the use of liquid metal in laptops. These machines are frequently stored vertically in backpacks and subjected to constant movement and vibration. Liquid metal migration under those conditions is inevitable and will lead to failure. A high-quality thermal paste or a solid interface material should be the standard for mobile systems. I've had this Laptop for about 6 months now. It's my second ASUS this year. The first was not a good fit because I like a 17 inch. I purchased this one to fit my needs. It's 95% great. Keyboard keys and number pad are ok, but i've occasionally had a key "not quite press" the way I wanted to while gaming. The screen is great quality and shows colors/ lighting nicely. I've seen better, but you cant beat it for the price. I upgraded the RAM and Storage. It was pretty accessible and not a bad experience to get inside. There are 8-11 screws to secure everything, so not "EASY" like Alienware, but I'm not going in there often, so it's alright. The Hardware is good, everything seems to work alright together. I would LOVE to see some more USB ports on this computer. With only 2 USB 3.0 on the side and 2 USB-C hidden in the back, it's a little inconvenient I've had some issues with leaving the computer on, walking away, and 15- 30 min the computer is Sleeping. I try to wake it up, but the keyboard doesn't work OR the screen remains black. You CANNOT wake it up unless you hold the power button and hard reset the computer. This is Pretty constant until I messed with some settings and made sure the NVidia software was up to date. BUT it does still happen sometimes. Contacting customer support is a NIGHTMARE. Everytime you email them or reply, you get a different rep and have to explain your issue many times. They will come back with a reply and ask you to try things (reset bios, settings, send them system reports) but it goes in circles without resolve until they ask you to ship it to them. This process took 3 months. I decided I did not trust them and just deal with the issue. Since updating the graphics card and playing with systems settings, its better but not perfect. Update: A couple of months after the warranty expired the laptop made a slight popping noise, shut off, and wouldn't power up any more. I was lucky and had bought the extended protection but this laptop was unstable even before it died So far, it's a great replacement for my 5 yo Strix. I almost returned it without opening due to incorrect labels on it. The white labels have the wrong model number on it, the cheaper, Wal-Mart version of this laptop.
