    • A Great Portable Computer for the Price

Well, I suppose I'm not super computer savvy but I spend a lot of time on computers and I know what I like. My wife and I own a Dell desk top computer which we share between the two of us. I'll be going back to school in the spring and we thought it might be nice to have an extra computer around the house so we could both work on projects, or watch videos, or whatever at the same time. Unfortunately, we don't have a lot of money to spend so I really did my research before purchasing. I spent less than $200 for this little Chromebook and I think I really got my money's worth. With the exception of the storage capacity (which can be easily upgraded with an SD Card), it seems to be on a par with MacBook Air but for less than a third the cost. It's fast, easy to use, light weight, and durable. The last two qualities are especially important to me because I'm a cyclist and a strap hanger. If you travel primarily by automobile, you can't fully grok how important it is for someone who travels primarily by bicycle and/or bus to pack light and have durable, water resistant gear. It isn't mentioned in the product description, but I was pleasantly surprised that this Chromebook came with a 12 month accident protection warranty. To me that says a lot about Asus' confidence in the durability of their product. Admittedly, I am a big time Google user. I've had a gmail account for years and I use all the wonderful products - Drive (docs, sheets, slides, and drawings), Voice (both phone and sms), Hangouts, Keep, Calendar, etc - that google has. If you're like me in this you'll be very happy to see that this Chromebook is a natural extension of your blissful Google experience. One thing I would strongly recommend to anyone who decides to purchase this product is that you explore the help (?) section soon after you start it up for the first time. This is a Chrome OS so its slightly different than a Mac or Windows OS and will take a little getting used to. It's very intuitive and user friendly but you'll save yourself a lot of frustration if you take an hour to learn how to use it. All in all, I think this is an extraordinary product and I would highly recommend it to anyone who is looking for an inexpensive, very portable computer for school or work. I spent days researching laptops and Chromebooks trying to figure out what the best option would be for homeschooling my three elementary aged children. I finally settled on this Chromebook, and man I'm glad I did. I was skeptical after reading all the reviews but I'm skeptical about everything these days. So in some of the reviews I saw complaints about screen quality, a cap lock button not working etc. Well, it's a Chromebook so it does not have a cap lock button, so that's a non issue. The screen quality doesn't compare to my iMac, but I wasn't expecting it to, my iMac cost me $1,300 and this Chromebook cost me $216. The screen quality I think is amazing for the price. It's not bad at all. It's not like playing an Atari or the old Sega genesis we had as kids lol. All in all I bought 3 of these Chromebooks and I think they are a great buy! They are very speedy for my slow internet connection and everything functions flawlessly and did I mention they are really easy to set up and operate!? This is just what I needed for the kids. Now I can stay organized with all of my kids school work, no fighting over my expensive desktop and the kids have everything they need in a compact Chromebook. I couldn't be happier with my purchase! They are plenty rugged (mind you they are still a delicate electronic device, I don't care how rugged anyone claims an electronic device to be, my children are going to be taught to treat then very delicately!). But they are rugged enough where I feel if there was a minor accidental drop etc, they would be fine. I say go for it! We love ours!! I will be back to update in the event one of them dies or malfunctions and warranty is not honored or something like that. I'm hoping these will last a long time, in the end, if they last 2+ years they have paid for themselves in my eyes. ... show more

    • It's a cheap chromebook that gets the job done!

I got this chromebook because it was the cheapest one I saw with 4 GB of RAM (which is necessary nowadays). I use Microsoft Office Online within Chrome to do all my word processing or Excel. I have owned this chromebook for half of a year. Pros: This computer has the longest battery life I've ever experienced. My old computer was the coveted Dell XPS 13, but this has such a larger battery (albeit I've only used it for half a year, so it could go down). It can deliver speed and it can play Google Android Store apps. I've downloaded a few apps to help me with my worktasks (Caret for notetaking, Google Play Music/Spotify for music, Skype for Android, etc.) Cons: The keyboard is not good. It requires too much key travel to register a letter. I wish it was more sensitive. I am a fast typer, and I often find myself missing letters because I didn't press the keystroke with enough force. It's rather annoying! Also, there is no dedicated "Delete" key (you have to do Alt + Backspace for it). I've also heard it's difficult to setup a printer with ChromeOS, but I do not own a printer so I cannot verify this. I'm pretty satisfied with my purchase. I spent a cheaper amount of money (225 US Dollars) and I am getting a very fast machine with very long battery. Of course, I cannot do any programming on this machine, so I have switched to cloud computing to solve this task. It's also pretty lightweight, which is nice. Summary: This is a very good computer for anyone, in my opinion. Programmers (like me) can adapt and install Linux. Older people (like my parents) can use it to do any of their tasks, like check Excel, Word, or email without worrying about getting viruses or going through something confusing. Little kids can toy with the machine without worry of breaking/harming it because it is very easy to reset "powerwash" the machine, and it's very durable. The one extra thing I would recommend is to buy a 64 GB SD Card so you can store more files locally! ... show more
