  • Decent Paint Pens for the Price
Style: Fine,Unique
I received these for free to test & review them: I tried the pens for at least a week & found they performed adequately for what they are intended & even for a few applications that they weren't meant for. They worked on many surfaces, glass, plastic, stone, paper, wood, ceramic, even fingernails as my daughters experimented with them for nail art. I found that you need to heat set or seal them or they will wash off, with the exception of a few colors; Yellow, Orange, White, Silver & Gold seemed to be more resistant to washing away. The other colors will wash off or reactivate with water which can be a plus as I found I could reactivate some colors on paper to apply certain techniques for mixed media art. The only complaint here is that I wish the paint was more consistent across all the pens, I’m assuming some colors use different binders in their mixtures. They would be great for children as most of the colors can be easily cleaned up with soap & water. Somewhere I saw information by Asani on how to set the paint in your oven when you write on ceramic cups with the pens. I can't find that information again but I’m sure you could write/email the company & get it. This will work with rocks as well if or if you prefer you can seal your rock with a clear sealant. Plastic will need to set for a time & be sealed, hand wash gently. For glass or fabric I'm not sure how to set the paint but again you could write the company for that information. They are definitely in-permanent unless you seal or set them so keep that in mind for your intended projects. Starting off as instructed I got them flowing fine but I had to go back and re-prime them as I was writing so the flow was not consistent for long periods. The tips are very firm so no worries about wearing them down quickly, I believe that the paint is flowing more around the tip than through it which might be the reason for the inconsistent flow. After priming the tip sometimes I sometimes would get a puddle of paint when I started writing so then I rolled the tip after priming & that helped a lot, the instructions recommend to start writing on a scrap before starting your project but I found rolling allowed me a slightly longer flow time in use. For coloring however getting that inicial puddle was fine as you can spread the paint with the tip (use the side of the pen to move the paint around) I was able to get it to fill evenly without streaks & bare spots that way. The colors dry matte & you can write over with pen or pencil which makes them nice for art journaling They will reactivate with water so if used in combination with watercolor you will want to paint the watercolor first then use the pens on top. Going along the edges of the pen lines with a wet brush to achieve a shadow effect is a fun technique I like to use. They show up well on black paper, I did get some back splatter from the white as you can see in the picture but that is on me. & as you can also see the flow is not consistent, but these are not meant for writing long lines rather for creating single characters one at a time. I recommend wiping the tips off before capping otherwise excess paint will get into the caps & can cause some gumming up of your tips. You can pull the tips out carefully & wash them then reinsert them back into the pen. If you are a fine art or illustrator looking for a cheaper alternative to Posca pens then these will not work for finished artworks. But the price point makes them great for mockups, learners & hobbyists. If you are new to paint pens there is a learning curve & these are a great way to learn without wasting money on more expensive supplies. There are no fumes so they are great for kids & people with sensitivities. The caps are very snug, be sure to press them down good so your tips don't dry out. You may need to twist & pull to get the cap off, hold on to the base of the colored part below the cap if you do because otherwise it will screw off exposing you tip or sometimes taking the tip away and exposing the paint. If I was to recommend anything to the manufacturer it would be to make the paint more consistent where either all colors are water soluble or non water soluble. A web page dedicated to the uses, techniques, sealing/setting, cleaning & storage information would be helpful. Also making them refillable by selling bottled paint & giving instructions on how to refill would make them more environmentally friendly. ... show more

  • Pleasantly surprised!
Style: Fine,Unique
I like these! They aren’t my favorite but the good outweighs the annoying. I’ve had these markers for a few days and have tried them on paper and fabric (un-stretched natural canvas, so it has a bit of tooth/texture. They come wrapped individually, it’s not super easy to get off, use scissors. The caps are TIGHT! I love this because I can’t stand caps that fall off when I’m using them, or even just being shuffled around. These babies aren’t going to come off. The colors are vibrant! I think they did a great job here. The points ARE extra fine tipped (for a paint marker like this). Seems like the tip is sturdy enough, fills with ink quickly, and doesn’t need as much reloading as I have had to do in some other brands. After shaking about 10 seconds, (I’m impatient) it probably took 5/ 1 second presses for the top to fill the INITIAL time I used them. The thing that kills a star is a bit of spray and tiny bit of leakage on one of the markers(see ink on hand) On the fabric (red ink) I noticed little splatters/spray around some of the letters, this happened no matter what speed I was using them. On the paper, I wrote in my normal style and speed, the spray again (purple ink). I think the angle I normally hold my pens contributed to that because when I held the pen at a lower angle (green ink) I only noticed a tiny bit; this was true when I wrote my normal way but extra slow (blue ink). Over all, good experience and will continue to use! ... show more

  • Worth it.
Style: Fine,Unique
Sheerness was not my concern when I bought these, as I wanted good opaque acrylic markers. (Review process asked about sheerness? Anyways.) I usually buy the Montana markers. After learning the hard way that you get what you pay for, I hesitated with these. They looked suspicious. But dadgummit, the reviews were good and Montana is minimum 7 bucks a marker. Additionally, I wanted to really get in there with some detailed linework and these looked promising. So, now that I have been using these for a few weeks, I feel like it's safe to type out loud how good they have been for the price. They are easy to use, and very slim. However, I have had markers that ran out before and looked full. Not the case with these, and the little box makes em great for going back and forth across the studio cuz I can just stick em in a hoodie pocket...which means when I see a line that's messed up I can whip em out and fix it on the spot, rather than getting the marker caddy then having to find that error again. I have no problem holding them, but if you are suffering from arthritis or something similar, I would look at something bigger, as, again, they are slim (think skinny crayola markers but smoother and smaller). Very easy to get paint going. Definitely will consider looking at this brand again in the future. ... show more

  • Black dried out quickly, all other colors seem to hold up.
Style: Fine,Unique
The black marker dried out the same day I opened the package, which sucked. The markers run very easily and pool color if you press too hard on one spot, so you have to find the right tip pressure to prevent that. The other markers work fine and seem to dry quickly on the surface used (ceramic mugs). However, I don't know if I would want these for real beginners. I'm new to ceramic markers, but I have used other drawing and painting mediums before, so it was fairly easy for me to adjust. If you are entirely new to art, these may be a little rough to get used to, but that depends on the person (obviously). (Extra tip: If you mess up drawing on ceramic, 100% acetone will remove the mark even if it is dried. I assume this works on other surfaces, but I haven't tried it.) I'm still working on my mugs, and ended up getting a different brand of black markers. I haven't baked anything yet, so no clue as to how permanent this will be. ... show more
