Top Amazon Reviews

  • A clear step upward in detail
This review is about the sound quality of the converters and nothing else. I'm coming off a Roland Quad Capture, aka UA-55, which I've been using the better part of the past 7 years. Taken at face value the Roland was fine. But when you compare it to this, your ears will not allow you to lie to yourself about which one sounds better. From early on, I've always felt like something was missing after using the UA-55 to track my samplers and beats into the DAW. I thought something was wrong with my ears, because every review I've read of the UA-55 made it seem like there was little left to be desired from using this device. I also found it strange that there's little to no reviews comparing the Quad Capture to other names. I decided to buy the BOOM after reading reviews of the ADAC and I can tell you now, this device has helped my recordings sound more compelling in terms of sound. THIS DEVICE keeps more of what I like to think of as the "soul" in the sound of what I track through it. Too often tracking my beats using the UA-55 left the recording sounding like life was missing, where as tracking with the BOOM now feels like a more accurate representation of what I heard in my room before I put it into the PC - more detail in the bottom-end and more depth of field. Overall a more full and high quality sound. Not to mention, what I play back through the DAW itself now give a more accurate picture as well. If this device sounds this good, I can only imagine what the other products higher up the tier list that Apogee has sounds like. And just like that, I've decided I will only buy their products now for this part of my setup. While I'm not a fan of the BOOM only having one mic pre, or that the headphone input is on the back, I would still recommend to music producers this device out of all others in its price range, based on sound alone. The sound is what's most important to me. When I sample into my MPC, it takes what I sample and makes it sound better, and I want my audio interface to have that same respect. ... show more

  • Excellent sound quality, great design and build, some odd quirks for regular studio use
I had heard a lot of good feedback about Apogee audio interfaces in the past but had never had the opportunity to use one. Given the chance to try out this Apogee Boom model interface, I decided to give it a shot. I have to say that the design, build quality, and sound capturing is very good. But the unit does have a few quirks that I'm not a big fan of. The sound quality is probably its biggest asset. I have used many different audio interfaces and this one is definitely up there amongst the best I've used for accuracy in sound reproduction. It really does capture the full dynamic range thanks to its build in DSP and DACs and I haven't found myself struggling to get the sound right after recording. The build quality of the unit is also quite. nice. It feels like a rugged piece of equipment that could even take a hit and keep on ticking (not that I'd recommend tossing any interface around). The design looks kind of cool as well and will catch people's eyes. The biggest drawbacks for me are some of the weirder quirks. I use studio monitors for mixing but often use headsets for recording. It's unfortunate that there is no separated volume control for the headsets vs monitors as once you plug your headphones in, the outs simply cut out. Additionally, there is no manual phantom power switch which I use regularly on the audio interface I use in my main studio. You can only control that using Apogee's software suite which I also had a lovely time getting access to due to their website not working properly when I was setting up an account (eventually this got resolved on its own). It would have been much better to have some kind of external switch on the unit itself. That said, overall I'm extremely happy with this interface. It is a solid piece of audio hardware that really delivers on sound quality, doesn't take up too much space, and is funky looking to boot. Definitely worth checking out if you're in the market for a lower-cost interface. ... show more

  • The little engine that could..
I purchased this interface to replace my current one, and I have to say I am blown away about how this interface sounds. The built-in DSP made all the difference and made my voice (and Guitar) sound amazing, I didn't know I had it in me ;) Great builtin presets. After installing the software, I had trouble with updating the firmware, but Apogee's support team was really helpful and stepped me through it. Since then, the unit is rock solid, just as the steel case.. Initially I was worried if it could drive my headphones, but it can..the headphone output is loud, really loud! All in all, I only can recommend this unit. ... show more

  • Powers my Shure SM7B without a cloudlifter, purely on USB, as claimed.
Once you bump up the gain and enable phantom power, the unit is plug-and-play with the Shure SM7B, without the need for a cloud lifter, and on just a USB C connection (that comes with a USB type A adapter). This blows my mind, and makes the setup/use incredibly quick and convenient. For the price (vs a competing audio inteface + cloud lifter setup) this thing is great. ... show more
