  • Highly recommend
Style: Robot Q
Bought this for my 7 year old grandson. Was a little nervous as couldn’t find many reviews, and have found some Lego dupes inferior quality, but need not have worried. Great quality product and packaging. Really easy to use the control ap. even for grandma :) Mist importantly grandson loved it and is working his way through different models which all have something a bit different to keep it fresh. ... show more

  • A fantastic STEM building set that brings your creations to life
Style: Robot Q
LEGO is great by itself, but incorporating motorized and other moving parts injects a whole new level of creativity. That’s great for my little LEGO-loving six-year-old who is now at an age where he can really start learning about how these types of mechanics work and even incorporate some simple, but real coding to bring his creations to life. This one does exactly that. Indeed, we’re no strangers to generic building sets, having amassed a bunch from various sellers over the years. In terms of quality, this is among the best. The pieces have a similar feel and weight to LEGO and snap together well. The set comes with one control module with an infrared sensor and a color sensor, two motors, two LED lights and is Bluetooth-enabled. And while this may seem fairly or limited, there’s a surprisingly large amount of customization this allows for. That’s very apparent from the various different builds you can make from this starter kit, the instruction for which are available on the app and are very easy to follow. You do need three AA batteries and obviously a phone or tablet to connect to the Apitor app in order to get everything up and running properly. The app itself is pretty straight forward and easy to use, though your little one will need some guidance to start. I have had it disconnect a few times, but for the most part, the Bluetooth connection between the app and the control module is pretty solid. The first thing we built was the racing car, which he loves. But he’s already eyeing some of the animal builds so I have a feeling that we’ll be moving on to them in short order. Love this set. It truly qualifies as STEM and is something that I know my boy will be able to get more out of in the years ahead. ... show more

  • Programmable brick set with limited functions
Style: Robot Q
Pricewise, this set is a lot cheaper than the Lego mindstorm series, with the tradeoff of limited functions. It's not a bad set for learning programming, but if you want a set that provides more functions and future proof, get the Lego mindstorm. As seen in the pictures, it only includes two motors, and they are fixed in the control box. You couldn't move these two motors around for more complicated builds. The color and proximity sensors can be moved. However, bothy of them only work in short distance. I'm ok with the color sensor working in about 3mm distance, but the proximity sensor also only works in a short distance, about 40mm or so. Also, 3 AA batteries are needed and not included. ... show more

  • Real STEM and Coding Toy
Style: Robot Q
While many toys are marketed as STEM toys, they often have little to do with STEM or coding. However, this toy is a genuine STEAM toy, including visual coding. Our daughter loves assembling things and watching figures come together, so we thought this would be a perfect toy for her. One rainy afternoon, we put together her first model: an F1 car. She was delighted, and when we showed her how to make it go back and forth or spin around using the app-powered controls, she got really excited! It’s especially cool that the app supports gyroscope mode, allowing you to control your model by tilting your mobile device in different directions. The kit itself exceeded our expectations in terms of quality. It comes with numerous blocks, a motor block connected to sensors, allowing you to build 20 different animals, various vehicles, and more. The bricks themselves are comparable to LEGO (but more affordably priced) and withstand rough handling. However, this toy heavily relies on the app, as it involves real visual coding. So, if you’re not a fan of screens or lack the required device (we couldn’t install it on a Fire tablet but it worked great on an iPhone), you won’t fully experience its potential. While printed assembly instructions are provided for only one model, the F1 car, the app contains instructions for everything else, along with programming details and remote control functions that we had a lot of fun toggling between gyroscope and direction modes. In these early days, our next project is to build a crane. We believe this toy will grow with her through various stages: Stage 1 - Parent Assembles, Child Watches Stage 2 - Parent Guides, Child Assembles Stage 3 - Child Assembles + Tries Coding Stage 4 - Child Assembles + Creates Own Code The only challenge is ensuring the little pieces don’t get lost in the meantime, which seems like an impossible task! ... show more
