I had a great experience with the AncestryDNA Test Kit. It’s an excellent starter kit for anyone curious about their ethnic background and family origins. We often assume we know where we come from, but the results can be surprisingly different and in my case, incredibly eye-opening. The process itself is simple and convenient. You just provide a saliva sample, seal it, and send it back using the prepaid postage. Then it’s just a matter of waiting, I received my results in about five weeks, with helpful progress updates along the way. What really stood out to me was how detailed and informative the results were. The ethnicity breakdown is presented clearly, with region-specific insights, historical context, and explanations of how different populations may have moved over time. I was especially surprised by the strong Puerto Rican connection in my results, along with links to Native American ancestry. It wasn’t something I expected, but the way it was explained made everything come together. Another great feature is the ability to connect with potential relatives. I was able to reach out to a few matches and even discovered new family information, which made the experience even more meaningful. The DNA breakdown is amazing to see that level of detail! Some I knew but others I did not and seeing the percentages of DNA and maps of where ancestors were located was fascinating. The price special was so worth it!

I've done DNA testing with all of the major companies now. And I've been at this DNA stuff for almost 15 years now. * I found the ethnicity estimate to be just about equal to everyone else. You can get more detail running your own models via gedmatch but for the curious or beginner, this is the easy result. If you just want to know whether you need a kilt or lederhosen or green beer for the next holiday seasons then this works as well, with many particular limitations, as any of the others. * There's no medical interpretation - most don't anymore. You can get good medical results running your raw download through Promethease for a few bucks. If you want to know medical propensities then Ancestry won't help much on its own. * The relationship calculations are pretty accurate and the database is huge. Compared to my other tests, this one returned far more and much closer connections. If you're looking for birth parents and such, this is the place to start. Just remember that the calculator is an estimate and other possibilities exist. - The sampling process was simple "spit in a tube, mail it in" - I much prefer cheek swabs but this gets the job done. - Time was super fast for me - 4 weeks from mail-in. I have a test out with one company that is nearing 3 months to process. - The user interface is pretty simple for newbies but doesn't offer much in the way of analysis tools for those who have DNA experience. Gedmatch can makeup for the shortfall in analysis tools if you can get your matches to upload there. - The ease of creating an attached tree makes for some particularly easy genealogical research to confirm/refute family connections. - The ease of creating an attached tree makes for some particularly prevalent errors in family trees. - yDNA and mtDNA predictive markers are hidden in these results if you want to make an effort to dig them out. - The marketing of this tester has created a large database of folks who were only interested in ethnicity and admixture estimates who have no interest in and won't reply to genealogy queries. Many haven't logged back in since they got their results back. There seem to be a lot of customers who forgot that molecular biology, human origins and migrations geography, and world history weren't their best subjects in school and were expecting this to return an easy result to "grasp it all" in a few minutes. The more you want to dig, the more complex the understanding will become. "DNA for Dummies" is a master's degree - "All You Ever Wanted to Know..." is a PhD. If you get hung up on needing to understand it all in a few short hours then you're going to get very frustrated. Take it in a little at a time. Having spent many $1000's on this hobby over the years, I'm very pleased with this $70 investment into understanding who I am and where I came from. Your mileage may vary.

I'm a history major in university and spend a lot of time studying migrations and people groups, both historical and from a more anthropological approach. I adore cultures and the history of different groups of people - every group is beautiful and fascinating. I've done quite a bit of family research, and I'm primarily interested in why I look the way I do. My hair is naturally blonde but extra curly, my skin is extremely fair, and my eyes are light green. As far as I knew, I only had English and Germanic heritage with a touch of Scandinavian and Scottish - AncestryDNA basically confirmed just this. I received 47% England, Wales, and Northwestern Europe, 44% Germanic Europe, 7% Ireland and Scotland, 2% Sweden. I think I was slightly disappointed to spend this amount of money to reiterate what I already knew with little expansion upon those topics - I didn't have any specific communities within these regions on AncestryDNA; although, as far as I can tell, I come from the state of Niedersachsen (North Saxony), Germany, and East Sussex in the UK, both tracing back generations. I wonder if there is some sort of blurred line due to the Saxons and Angles and Anglo-Saxons later in history - I'm basically 50% Saxon, 50% Anglo-Saxon. That being said, my light obsession with this topic leads me to have unwarranted expectations, but AncestryDNA did exactly what they stated they would. The percentages and different regions line up PERFECTLY with what I expected. The Ireland/Scotland is absolutely from my grandmother, who is part Scottish. The Swedish is from my mom's side through one ancestor in the relatively distant past. It's incredible they were able to pick that up. The traits feature was likewise interesting - it also told me what I expected! They figured I have blonde hair (correct), blue eyes (incorrect; however, I believe that green and blue eyes are indistinguishable via DNA testing. So... basically correct), curly hair (correct), a sensitivity to sweets (correct), and tendency toward heavier caffeine consumption (extra correct). Likewise, the DNA Matches functionality is INCREDIBLE. I have 718+ relatives listed; one of whom is a first cousin. I had absolutely no idea I even had this cousin. Many are 2nd and 3rd cousins about whom my mom exclaimed, "HOW DID THEY KNOW?!" Combining the minds and resources of multiple people in one family can help build a stronger and larger family tree - very interesting and impacting. Overall, this service provided exactly what I expected and estimated my ethnicity to be exactly what I figured. I would have loved to have been designated a community within these regions; however, I understand limitations and already know, so it would only be to confirm my suspicions.
