  • Worth the price for me
Color: Turquoise
Sure out of the box isn’t perfect, most reviews online are based on the launch software. Flash Rocknix (Linux) and it will be. If you keep WiFi off and lower brightness that will improve battery life as well. The IPS screens have a bit of light bleed in the corners, largely from the install screw pressure on screen and common on screens of this type. You won’t notice it when in games. It will play anything through ps1 well. I use it for nes, snes, sega genesis, gba and nds. I received the original non matte version which is better than the newer flat painted plastic version. Very pleased with it after about half a day of setup and scraping video and box art. As far as other clamshells I also own the Thor, Pocket DS, and rg35xxsp, and 3ds xl. As far as aesthetics and authentic console feel I rank this up there with my 3ds. It’s not as comfortable as the 3ds bc the corners are a bit more square, but the tight tension hinge is my favorite. This will be my EDC due to its low cost and ability to play a number of systems I’d like to play but usually don’t due to always gravitating towards 3ds and up with more powerful handhelds. ... show more

  • Really neat but it has some pretty big flaws.
Color: Turquoise
The Anbernic RG DS is a really mixed bag for me. On one hand the build quality is actually really solid. On the other Android is a fairly bad experience on this device. Let's break it down. Build quality. The build quality is really solid. It feels pretty close to something that Nintendo themselves would have made. The hinge is nice and solid and the plastics feel high quality as well. The face buttons are really nice, a little on the clicky side but the D-Pad on the other hand isn't my favorite. The actual function of it is fine but the texture of the D-Pad feels really weird to me. It feels cheap for lack of better words. It does do the job though. For all the flack that the analog sticks get I personally don't find them to be that bad for what they are. For me they worked just fine in the games that required them. Sure they aren't the best but one really wouldn't expect them to be in a device like this. The shoulder buttons are extremely clicky, it doesn't bother me personally but they are very, very loud. Speakers. Spearkers are loud and clear enough and face forward. They are not an audiophiles dream by any means but they are far from bad, actually for a system like this they are way better then expected. The screens. While the screens are both 4:3 and only 480p they still look awesome for what you are playing. They even allow for a 2x upscale in the vast majority of DS games that can handle the upscale without bogging down the system. They are bright and clear and the colors are fairly vivid. Again, they aren't the worlds greatest screens but they are far from the worst options they could have gone with. A big downside of my personal unit is that I have some pretty bad light bleeding on my top screen. It's not terrible, it mainly effects black screens the most. It is there though and probably the worst screen bleeding I have seen on a device in many years. Battery life and charging. Here comes the negatives of this device. While being budget covers a multitude of sins this is where the device slips. It does have a fairly hefty 4,000 Mah battery but the system is fairly power hungry. Playing DS games is going to net you right about 3-4 hours of battery life. Usually I'm done playing by this point anyways, so that's fine. The real downside is charging speed. This thing charges so, so slow. We are talking 3-4 hours slow! It really is one of the biggest downsides of this device. Processing power. The chip in this device is fairly weak for this day and age. You can do a bit of PSP at the top end and then mostly everything below that. With exception to some N64 being unplayable. Most people are going to want to play DS on this and it does do that pretty well. Most games will allow for upscaling while a handful are going to need to be played at native resolution. They really do look awesome on these newer screens. Mellon DS doesn't work great as of now, but drastic works and while it is older, I found it to work pretty well. Now the big downside. Android! Android is just not great for a device like this. I really wish they could have went with linux. There is so much going on behind the scenes on Android that uses up the already limited resources of a device like this. Add to this the limited 3GB of ram and your in for a slog some times. For the most part it does work, it just doesn't always work well. On top of this the two screen experience on this device isn't always user friendly. I had issues where my top screen in DS would just disappear and I couldn't figure out how to get it back without restarting drastic. When I got this device I had to configure drastic to display on two different screens. I already knew how to do this from past experience but if your new, prepare to figure these things out on your own. Switching from the top screen to the bottom, getting in and out of the launcher and more isn't made obvious from the get go and no instructions were included. Everything can be figured out quickly but it's not exactly intuitive and even after a week of use I don't know everything about this device. As always Anbernica version of Android is not the greatest. The launcher is alright once you figure it out and I recommend if you get this you just use the launcher. They already have most of the emulators configured through that so its really just a matter of getting your games in the right spots and pointing your emulators to them in the launcher, again, it's not obvious, but you'll figure it out. No SD card is included but I found the internal memory to be enough for what I wanted to play on this. Its not much, it's 32gb but only 20 of that is left for the user. All and all, I think its an excellent device let down by a couple of pretty big hardware and software flaws. Some of this will be fixed in time but other things like the charging speed is a limitation of the hardware. But then again, it's hard to beat it for the price. ... show more

  • Perfect for regular DS games!!!
Color: Black
At first I was on the fence of buying this but I am so glad that I did. This is a perfect DS replacement I can play DS games perfectly fine and some PS1 games. This doesn't play 3ds games unfortunately. The black and red design is really flashy and turns when and I absolutely love it. Comes with 2 screen protector that was easy to install. I do recommend installing rocknix os, the device runs really smoothly and there's no input device and battery life is also amazing on this OS only draining about 2% of every 3 to 4 days while it's deep sleep mode. It doesn't come with any preloaded games so that is something you're going to have to look into overall if you're looking for a system that can play DS games with no problems up to a 2X resolution I would recommend this and it's a great value for money ... show more

  • Do your research. It's really good, but not great
Color: Turquoise
I researched this thing for a couple months before pulling the trigger to buy it so I knew exactly what I was getting myself into when it came in. I think a lot of people get this expecting it to be able to run 3DS but it just won't, so if you're wanting to play things like that you'll need something a little more powerful. That being said, it runs original DS games perfectly. The only *real* issue I have with it is that it seems to wake itself up randomly from sleep mode, and since it tends to run pretty hot most of the time, it feels like it's trying to take a ride down the "sewer-slide" (iykyk). And the battery life is pretty poor, too Overall, do some research, know what you're buying before you buy it and everything should be fine. There are also a few different operating systems available for it that are supposed to improve the performance slightly. I haven't tried any of these and the out-of-the-box experience is pretty user friendly which is nice ... show more

  • Not worth it!
Color: Black
Such a poor product. Takes forever to charge; looses battery power immediately and rapidly; It sputters while playing games, and shuts down intermittently. The person this was bought for is sooo disappointed and disgusted with this console. It is no good.

  • Awesome device but came with a defective hinge.
Color: White
The console itself feels great and good quality. Unfortunately mine came with a messed up hinge which is probably not common. Ordered a replacement.

  • Amazing Value
Color: Black
I purchased this device primarily for playing Nintendo DS titles. My specific intention was to revisit the Fire Emblem series on larger, brighter screens. Surprisingly, I’ve developed a deep appreciation for this device. Launching games using the built-in emulator was a seamless experience. The device’s aligned top and bottom screen ratio allows me to enjoy classic titles as they were created on more vibrant IPS displays. The overall build quality is commendable, and I believe the hinge will withstand regular use, provided it’s not excessively bent. While the processor may not be sufficient for playing 3DS games, it’s more than adequate for Nintendo DS titles. Initially, I had concerns about the sound quality due to Anbernic’s history of volume imbalance in some of its previous handhelds. However, both low and high volume settings played without any cracking or buzzing. ... show more
