Description

The AmScope SE305R-AZ-E digital stereo microscope has interchangeable pairs of 10x18mm and 20x10mmwidefield eyepieces, 1x and 3x objectives, upper and lower halogen lighting, two stage plates, and an arm stand. The 0.3MP camera has a CMOS color sensor, image capture and editing software, and USB 2.0 output to capture or display still or video images on a computer or projector. The forward-mounted binocular viewing head has an interpupillary range of 55 to 75mm and a 45-degree inclination to ease viewing for young users. The WF10x18mm and WF20x10mm eyepieces combine with the 1x and 3x objectives to provide 10x, 20x, 30x, and 60x magnification, and a longer working distance for inspecting large-scale specimens that require handling or repair. The optical glass lenses provide sharp images, and are fully coated to ensure high-resolution images. Dioptric adjustment accommodates individual eye- strength differences, and eye guards ensure comfortable viewing. A digital stereo microscope, sometimes called an inspection or dissection microscope, has low magnification and a long working distance that enables users to manipulate the object being inspected, and is used where image capture, detailed records, or documentation is required. The 0.3MP digital camera has a CMOS color sensor for displaying still microscopy images and streaming live videos to a computer or projector, and 40x magnification. The camera can be mounted in any 23mm eye tube. The camera includes image capture and editing software that provides still image and live video capture and editing capability, including measurement functions. The software supports JPG, TIF, GIF, PSD, WMF, and BMP file formats and is compatible with Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8 and 10. Camera drivers are compatible with Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8 and 10. The software includes Windows APIs for native C/C++, C, DirectShow, Twain, and LabVIEW that enable custom application development. The camera has a USB 2.0 data port (cable included). The microscope has upper (episcopic) illumination that reflects light off the specimen for enhanced visibility of opaque specimens, and lower (diascopic) illumination that transmits light up through the specimen for enhanced visibility of translucent and transparent objects. The 10W halogen light source provides bright light in a concentrated path. Bilateral coarse focus eases use for left- and right-handed users. The stage has a frosted stage plate for use with lower (transmitted) lighting, and a reversible black and white stage plate that provides contrast with light- and dark-colored specimens when used with upper (reflected) lighting. Stage clips that secure the specimen during viewing. The microscope has a 2-1/8" (53mm) working distance. All metal construction is durable and stain- resistant. Types include compound, stereo, or digital. Compound microscopes use a compound optical system with an objective lens and an eyepiece. Stereo microscopes show object depth in a three-dimensional image. Digital microscopes are used to display an image on a monitor, rather than looking through a lens. Microscopes can have monocular (one), binocular (two), or trinocular (three) eyepieces, with varying magnification abilities. Magnification ability refers to the size of an image. Resolution, also known as resolvant power, refers to the clarity of the image. The interaction between field of view (FOV), numerical aperture (NA), and working distance (WD) determines resolution. Microscopes can control magnification through a fixed focus, or through a range of adjustments. They can also utilize LED, fluorescent, and mirror light sources to help control viewing capabilities. Microscopes are widely used in education, lab research, biology, metallurgy, engineering, chemistry, manufacturing, and in the medical, forensic science, and veterinary industries.United Scope manufactures microscopy equipment and accessories under the brand name AmScope. • Good scope for a home lab
I am a scientist and I have experience using many different types of scopes. I needed something light-weight, not too expensive but good enough so I could dissect insects I collect in field, for my home lab. This little scope has it all. It fit into a small backpack without its box. I wrapped it with a towel and had no problem flying to the other side of the world. (You will need a converter for Europe where the voltage is higher than it is in the USA). The scope comes with a little eyepiece camera. I am really happy with the the scope itself, but the camera did not meet my expectations as it has a very narrow field of view. The imaging software that comes with it does not run on Windows 8, luckily I had an old laptop which had Windows XP, so I could take pictures. The software and the camera are very basic, but there is a time lapse option, and some image processing options etc. Basically, you cannot get publication-quality images, but does the job for documenting your samples. ... show more

  • Good Scope
The reasons for give the scope a 3-star instead of a 5-star rating is the camera. We are using the scope in the geology field. Unfortunitally the camera will not zoom out to take photos of a complete specimen but rather a particular spot on the specimen. I had no prior knowledge of scopes so it was a bit of a hassle trying to figure things out as the scope comes with no instructions for using the USB camera attachment. Other than this, it is a really good scope that does what it advertises to do. ... show more

  • Excellent Value
For hobby and recreation, this scope seems to work well for viewing aquatic macroinvertebrates. Dual illumination, several objectives and the digital camera have all worked well. Seems like an excellent value so far.

  • microscope is great, camera/software does not work
I am very pleased with the performance of the microscope. Love it. However, the camera is completely unusable. gives you 10 seconds of vague fuzziness, then goes to black and will not give an image again. Tried it on two laptops- one a MacBook (using photo booth, which is the Mac workaround for this camera), and on a Dell laptop. Same result on both computers. Tried using a different and new USB cable in case the one they sent with the 'scope was junk, made no difference. A web search to troubleshoot this problem revealed that it is a pretty common one, and the issue is likely the lack of software support AmScope provides. Apparently, they do not update their software, they just cheerfully issue software that will cease to function as soon as you update your computer a couple of times. I get the idea behind planned obsolescence, but this is ridiculous. I expected to have paid for a working setup, and that is not what I got. So, bottom line is that the 'scope is pretty darn decent for the price, but if the included camera and software are an important part of your purchasing decision, you might want to give serious thought to another brand- AMScope just does not support their cameras. oh, and even if I had gotten the photo booth workaround to function, that would only have allowed for image capture- the ability to then measure, manipulate, stack, etc. with the image(s) resides in the software, which if it worked, looks great- lots of nifty microscope specific features. Sadly, I cannot recommend this 'scope because the camera and software were a very large part of my purchasing decision. I need to be able to accurately measure culture growth, among other things. I hate the fuss of returning things through the mail, but I am seriously considering returning this nice 'scope because of the camera issues. if I rated the 'scope and camera/software separately, I would give the 'scope five full stars. The camera would get none. Update- I have changed my mind about returning this 'scope. The microscope itself is great, and the software looks amazing, so I have decided to just suck it up with regard to the included camera and just buy an adapter to use my DLSR instead. I also changed my rating from two stars to four, since I am no longer quite as irked about the unusable camera. If the camera would actually communicate with the software I would absolutely give full five stars. So, while I am still a bit annoyed by the camera issue, it is no longer a deal-breaker. ... show more

  • Can not get the digital features to work!
The optical features of this microscope are fine - I use it for mineral specimens, small parts detailing and the like. But I am getting older and my eyesight makes me want to put a pix up on a large monitor, so I really bought this for the digital features. BUT, I do NOT like having to replace one eyepiece with the camera (a mere 640x320 sensor in a mega-mega- pixel era) or the impossibility of reading the on-disc manual, with its very small type and Japlish writing. I even printed out part of the manual, but it is NO help. Were I to do it again, I would buy a better optical stereo-microscope and hold off on the digital part until it becomes most attuned with MY needs. ... show more

  • Could not get the computer AmScope to work.
Could not get the computer AmScope to work. It would not focus. the instructions were not very good either. I lot of controls where grayed out (disabled) and I do not know why. I am a program and I would of never wrote a program this bad.

  • Great Scope for the price!
This is a great scope for the price! The dual light source is nice and an important feature on this sort of scope. The video made this simple scope an excellent teaching tool so that features could be pointed out during observation and photos can be made for creating test questions. Does not have a moveable stage and is not Leica quality. Nevertheless, you can still benefit greatly from having a good tool like this with which to work. Highly recommended! ... show more
