  • Super Sturdy Greenhouse for the Money
ONE-YEAR UPDATE: I've had this greenhouse for a year now and it's still 5 stars--looks as good as new except for needing a good wash down. It has withstood 40 mph winds, snow, blazing sun, and everything in between without budging. While I originally anticipated I would have algae or moss growth in the polycarbonate cells, I don't have any. I went through some of the negative reviews and noted that those greenhouses did not appear to be secured to any foundation--in one, you can see the foundation legs assembled incorrectly on the side of the base, pointing upward--these are supposed to extend into the foundation or ground below the base and attached to a foundation or buried. I thought I would explain how I did my foundation as I'm sure it's one of the secrets to the sturdiness of my greenhouse. My yard has a slight slope to it, so I assembled the base of the greenhouse, traced it on the ground, and began digging trenches about 6 inches to 1 foot deep. I added gravel to make sure the trenches were completely level, then inserted a perimeter of cinder blocks. I filled all the holes in the cinderblocks with gravel except for the corner pieces. I placed the greenhouse base on top of the cinderblocks with the legs dropping into the holes on each corner. Once I was sure everything was level and square, I filled those holes with fast-setting concrete (poured it in dry and added water) to encase the legs. The greenhouse has never budged. ORIGINAL REVIEW: My five-star rating is for the finished product, which is an awesome greenhouse for the money. I feel this unit deserves serious consideration by anyone looking for a greenhouse kit. But as other reviewers have noted, assembly is difficult at best, and some instructions and parts could use improvement. Although I had moments of serious frustration during assembly, I (a 50-year old woman) managed to do it myself over the course of three days, not counting the labor that went into preparing a level foundation. I researched greenhouse kits for over a year before settling on this one as a lower-cost "trial" option and, having read hundreds of greenhouse reviews, I don't think any greenhouse is easy to assemble. Pros: * SUPER STURDY. Every single panel and joint in this greenhouse is cross-braced. Compare that to other greenhouses (including ones that cost several times what this does) where there is just bracing on the corner panels. Yes, it's a lot of extra work to put these in place, but by the time you get to that point in the process, you're in the home stretch. When it is windy outside and I am in my greenhouse, it is as quiet and still as when I am in my house. * QUALITY MATERIALS. There are over 500 parts in this kit and (not counting the polycarbonate panels) only 30 or so are plastic. The polycarbonate is sturdy and uv-coated on one side. The base pieces are really heavy and straight and have mitered corners that make squaring up the foundation easy. * WELL-INSULATED. Without a heater, with doors closed overnight, greenhouse temp is, on average, 15 degrees warmer than outside temp. Plants are THRIVING inside, the biggest challenge is keeping them watered because they thought it was summer in February. * ATTRACTIVE. I've had several neighbors comment on how "cute" my greenhouse is. I do think it presents nicer than other polycarbonate greenhouses I've seen. * ROOMY. The actual measurements are 8 ft wide by 9.5 ft deep, but I have found this is more than enough room to store plants sufficient to fill a suburban backyard garden. In the summer, my inflatable hot tub will fit in here, too. * WELL-PACKAGED AND LABELED. Each side of the polycarbonate panels comes with protective plastic that is easy to remove. The metal parts are packaged well, too. There was only one dented piece and it was a cosmetic issue, not a functional one. * RESPONSIVE SELLER. I asked the seller for a digital copy of the instructions and they were very responsive in getting one to me. CONS: * This is HARD to assemble--moreso mentally than physically. You have to understand not only what you're doing on the current step but how it relates to steps down the road. If you struggle with assembling basic IKEA furniture, this project is not for you. * The polycarbonate is not sealed on the ends. I sealed each end with HVAC tape, but this appears to have been a huge waste of time as I can see moisture already seeping into the cells. * No extra hardware. I dropped a few of the main stainless steel nuts and bolts along the way and had to purchase additional ones from the hardware store (M6s, if you need it). * Too many steps covered in a single page in the manual, making the illustrations small and difficult to see important details, like which way a screw goes in. These should be spread out over several pages so the detail illustrations can be enlarged. * Cannot be screwed to a deck or other existing foundation. The only way to keep this grounded is to set the corner posts in concrete. * A few typos in the manual as to what type of screw is needed and how many. Fortunately, these don't happen until later in the assembly process where it's pretty clear it's a typo. * No online tutorials or other assembly helps, as there are with large brand greenhouses. TIPS: * Really read and understand the "language" of the manual before you start assembling anything. You will soon see there is a method to the madness. On each page, do step A, then B, then C. If more than that, do A1, then A2, then B1, and so forth. * Email the seller and ask for a digital copy of the manual. They will provide you a link to a HUGE file that is the version of the manual sent to the printers--the pages are out of order, but this is still a huge help in that it allows you to zoom in on the illustrations, etc. * Get a universal socket tool to hold the stainless steel screws in place as you tighten them on the handful of instances where they are not slid into a "slot" to hold them straight. * On the vertical wall supports, you will have to slide several screws into each slot for future use when you add bracing. Be sure to slide in the exact number that is specified. Then, as you are adding bracing, etc., you need to pay attention to "is this attached to the second or the third of the four screws I slid in here" to avoid redoing things in the future. I used blue painters' tape to tape "up" screws and hold them out of the way. ... show more

  • Absolute junk. Don't buy it
Nothing like spending hundreds of dollars on garbage. Set up: it took me several hours/days to put this thing together. The instructions were awful so it took quite a bit of undoing and redoing to get it right. Not all the holes were drilled in the correct spots. There are tons of gaps for air to escape. It is not wind restiant, we had one night of weather and it blew over. It rained and leaked, one of the panels slid off. It doesn't hold any heat through the night. I bought it because the reviews said it held heat and if you siliconed the gaps and polycarbonate panels that it would hold heat and prevent frost on plants through winter. That is definitely not the case. If it doesn't implode from the first snow fall it will surely freeze over despite being full of heat sources for my plants. I am super handy with wood and went this route for a greenhouse so it would be lighter and movable if needed. I probably could have built one in the time it took to fit this jalopy together. Needless to say I am mad at myself for spending the money and time buying this instead of building something of quality. ... show more

  • Get the updated assembly instructions
This 8x14x7.5 greenhouse is sturdy and beautiful. It was a birthday present for my wife; avid gardener. She loves it and spends time in it every day. I mounted lighting, speakers for music, electric outlets, and a propane heater. I would give 5 stars except the assembly instructions that came with item are minimalist and vague. It made assembly somewhat challenging and frustrating. I had to walk away a few times to keep my sanity. I am a hands-on engineer with decades of experience. I share this so you know my POV. Customer service is very good; a part was missing from the order and they got it to me in a timely manner. They also sent me the updated instructions at that point. But, the GH was already assembled at that point. They would have made my life much better if I had them from the start of the project. I am still working on the punch list and final adjustments to square it up. Though, most it will have to wait for spring. Bonus-the kit provides extra nuts, bolts and screws for replacement of dropped and lost items (or those thrown at the sky in frustration). Tips: 1. Be patient. 2. Get a good rubber mallet. 3. Take care with the vent windows from the start. Ensure they are square else adjust post-assembly will be extraordinarily challenging. 4. Don’t do like I did and assemble with protective plastic coating left on the panels. I couldn’t tell UV side from the other (wearing my glasses would have rectified this). You can see the difference. It made assembly, squaring and removing the film WAY more difficult. This was my biggest assembly mistake! 5. Read all the reviews; there are some gems of advice. 6. The original instructions said something like 3 people for 5 hours. LOL, maybe professional greenhouse assemblers that operate like a Formula 1 pit crew. Modify your expectations here. And, be patient. The finished product is worth the effort. It is a high quality greenhouse. You could spend 3 or 4 times as much and not get something as nearly as solid or pleasing to the eye. I would give it 5 stars, but the original assembly instructions that are sans caveats or clear verbiage warrant the reduction to a 4 star review. Possible improvements to project would be mounting on a raised foundation to increase overall height. Both my wife and I are over 6 foot and this would make our lives better. ... show more
