  • Love the performance. Harder install.
Style: Left Hand Size: Elongated
Had new floors installed in two bathrooms so had to unmount both toilets. A good time to replace the last toilet I hate. The other toilets had already been replaced by the same American Standard Cadet-3 Concealed. Love the strong one flush. No more flush, plunger, flush cycles and gallons of wasted water. This toilet consistently handles business in one flush. Rated 4 of 5 stars because installation is a little harder than an open trap toilet. My floor installer was supposed to remove and install the toilets but he was not familiar with the design so I did it rather than allowing him to cut around the toilet. Also, a little cleaning issue which I mention at the end. Starting with the existing Cadet I opted not to separate the bowl and tank. Too much back strain. My teenage son assisted with lifting and aligning in a tight space. However, I installed the new unit on my own. Straining my back again while attempting to lift and set the new bowl, I had an idea. Use a short scrap of 2x6 wood stud from an unrelated project, to stage the toilet over the waste line. That worked and saved a lot of stress on my back while I aligned the bowl over the mounting bolts. Probably could have just let the front wrest on the floor but I was paranoid about compressing the wax ring unevenly. The toilet is awkward to align with the bolts over the waste line because the bolt ports are mostly concealed. However, I could get a tight peek at them through the two seat ports (on the new bowl) and side bolt ports. I also used painter's tape and a pencil line to mark the bolt locations on the floor and the side of toilet. Side note on the wax ring. I didn't like having one chance to set the bowl in a traditional wax ring or the mess of near misses from past experience. Therefore, I opted to use the Danco Perfect Seal wax ring on both toilets. The wax is enclosed on the top and a rubber gasket completes the seal with the toilet. Installation was much cleaner and forgiving. Like other reviews the seat is not traditional. Can't accommodate a traditional seat without uninstalling the bowl. I hesitated for a moment but then considered that in the 12+ years I've lived in my home I've never had to or even thought about changing a toilet seat. So, given all four of my toilets are relatively new it will not be an issue for some time hopefully. Wife loves the clean lines which is why we opted for a concealed trap. However, some nasty urine residue can slowly seep into the toilet seat mounting holes over time, I assume when the seat mount becomes loose and teenage boys are not accurate. Even with regular cleaning you wouldn't notice that the enclosed space is getting slowly soiled. I only noticed it after removing the older Cadet, installed a year ago, and then inspecting the back. Not an issue for a traditional open trap toilet. Nevertheless, it wasn't that bad considering the duration. An easy wipe. But my wife is OCD about cleaning so we will devise a cleaning tool and reach back there periodically. ... show more

  • Why 3 Stars For a Great Toilet
Style: Left Hand Size: Round Front
To explain 3 stars when we essentially love this toilet -- now that it is completely installed and in use. First the positive: The toilet just about literally cleans itself. If someone has a particularly sticky evacuation and no time to clean the bowl on the spot, no worries, because a short while later, the mess will have peeled itself off the porcelain and the particulate matter will be resting in the bottom of the bowl to just be flushed away. We also like the gently closing seat and lid, which is easy on the nerves and less likely to cause toilet mishaps than a regular dropping and slamming lid. And we love the seamless exterior which has smooth planes and no curving pipe outline to catch the dust and dirt that a regular toilet does. And now for the Negative and the reason we cannot give this toilet a full 5 stars or even 4: The installation was a bit of a nightmare for a couple of different reasons: The access to the bolts to bolt the toilet down is very tight, cramped and difficult to work and the American Standard directions for installation, so misleading pictures and the supposed technical expert that the customer has to contact, is a little old lady who does not know the difference between the terms "flush" (meaning flat in the surface planes) and "level" (meaning adjusted to an even height). The pictures of the toilet trap and the floor show it looking to be at least an eighth of an inch above the surface of the floor, but Paul had installed it even closer to being flush with the floor, less than a 16th of an inch in difference... and even though the floor and trap and toilet were level, the floor and trap were not precisely flush with each other because they were not shown to be flush in the diagrams and were said to need to be merely level. Now the terms might be used interchangeably, but the misleading diagram left that wide open to interpretation -- which is a mistake on the part of the company, in our view, and caused a nearly 60 year old man to have to install a heavy toilet twice, once and finding out that it rocked (and not the modern good sense of that word) and have to pull it up and reinstall it. And American Standard rep (non-techspert) we talked to about all this didn't have nor give an ounce of caring about the difficulties we had due to the faulty diagrams in the directions. Her whole attitude was that's why you spend the money to have a professional install your toilet. But, see, it's not her money, and, therefore, not her decision. And if we'd wanted to spend a lot of money -- and had it to spend -- we wouldn't have bought our toilet from Amazon, we'd have gone to Lowe's and bought it there and had either one of their installers or a local plumber install our toilet. So the reason for 3 stars for a kind of great toilet is because of the treatment we got from American Standard and the knowledge that if we should ever encounter any problem with the toilet we will get nothing from them but haughty advice and a deaf ear. ... show more
