Description

Written by the curator of the accompanying April-August 1998 Costume Institute exhibit, this book views individual fashions along with the characteristics and techniques of a number of the innovators. Five sections discuss wrapping and tying clothes that adjusted to the individual wearer; clothes that stressed easy fastening; clothes with big pockets; mix-and-match separates; and elements adapted from menswear and carefree activewear. Also included are profiles of 23 major designers. Annotation c. by Book News, Inc., Portland, Or. Read more

Andrew Bolton wants American fashion to be celebrated “just like European fashion” for its emotions and …”lexicons”…. Whatever. American fashion should no longer be colonized by a British subject of the Wintour Empire. Richard Martin , on the other hand, understood that the power of American fashion IS the respect and acumen of quality clothing that is versatile and functional. Sportswear TRANSFORMED the entire world, and it didn’t do that because it wasn’t stylish. This is the book that tracks it, and centers the women designers who were at the center of its birth before Halston picked up the reigns with such focus and serious irreverence. Make clothes for the people wearing them, make them easy to care for, make them beautifully, and that’s what it’s about. Don’t make up nonsense, please. ... show more
