  • The best CPU I'd spend my own money on
Once I got past the problem of Amazon sending me an AMD CPU box that had the actual CPU stolen out of it, I finally got ahold of this monster and replaced an elderly Skylake build. Let me tell you, Zen 4 CPUs are... incredible. It's just jaw-dropping how much these pure 16-core/32-thread beasts can do, especially with a proper PBO configuration. Unlike the current-gen Intel consumer parts, which seem to be focusing on packing in weird "efficiency" cores and uneven performance curves, a 7950X delivers consistent, constant, gargantuan throughput across all 32 threads. I've done everything from gaming under Proton/WINE, language model merging/inference/quantization, and software development on this system in the 3 months I've had it. The 7950X has never stopped impressing me with how *incredibly* potent it is. There are workloads I used to rent AWS compute instances (at almost $2/hr!) to run, and I can take care of them in minutes on my home machine now. And gaming? Pfft! ZERO problems. Turn everything up to Ultra. I'm not going to have to think about CPU power for another 5 or 6 years, easy. I was an AMD fanboy going back to the AMD 386-20, and I've owned more AMD CPUs than Intel over the decades. But the last time I owned an AMD CPU was in the mid-2000s, an Athlon FX-57 (the last, fastest, single-core Athlon 64). Ever since then, I've been waiting for AMD to ship a "good" architecture. That finally came with Zen 3, but by the time I was ready to buy... Zen 4 was here. And BOY AM I GLAD IT IS. Long story short: if you're even *thinking* about buying the best of the consumer Zen 4 CPUs, you found it. BTW, this is the better of them, between this one and the "3D" one, for applications that are going to stress all the cores simultaneously. The way the 3D thing works looks a little bit faster on benchmarks, but when you are really putting the thing to the test, you'll be glad you went with the real thing. ... show more

  • Beast of a CPU
I switched back to AMD/Ryzen after not having owned an AMD CPU in a gaming rig since the Athlon XP 2500+ way back in the day. This processor performs phenomenally and makes me glad I switched back. These do run hot, so make sure you get a good cooler. I chose the Liquid Freezer II and it does an excellent job when paired with this CPU. ... show more

  • Don't buy Intel
Had so many issues with my old processor I would get random crashes it would get incredibly hot and I couldn't even put my PC to sleep without it boot looping multiple times. Now I'm able to emulate PS3 games with zero complaints. The performance of this ship is incredibly impressive. For most gamers however the 7800x3D is probably a better option. Is very good though if you plan doing both gaming and productivity. Paired with a 4080, this is a dream to use. Get's hot but doesn't throttle or crash and I ca N use sleep mode again. ... show more

  • This CPU is amazing, in so many ways!
I can run every core at 5500mhz, for hours, with just a little overclocking, core tuning, and a good 360mm AIO. This is just an amazing amount of computational power for a home computer. The best part, I have it tuned such that I can do this while it runs at 65c (vs 95c). This is an enthusiast CPU, and you will want to watch a lot of videos on how to tune and optimize it, and if you don't have excellent cooling, you will never get the performance you paid dearly for. This thing rocks, and handles any task I throw at it with zero hesitation. AM5 is also relatively future-proof for a while. :) ... show more

  • Super fast
I usually buy AMD CPUs. This was the fastest under $1000 at the time. No problems with it after 2 weeks.

... show more

  • Excellent performance but no sleep option (fixed April 2023)
This cpu has excellent performance and is substantially better then the 5950x I was using before. However there is one small gripe that has bothered me and so far no solution is available. If you use XMP or EXPO ram when you enable it the sleep option is disabled in the firmware. If you run at stock with no XMP or EXPO profile it will still work but defeats the purpose of buying better quality ram. I have tried two motherboards and update to the latest bios on both as well as switching between 1 2 and 4 sticks of ram and putting timings clock and voltage manually. If you buy this cpu and want to oc your ram your going to have to shut down or hibernate your pc every time you turn off your computer. I will update my review if a solution is presented but this is a serious issue that needs to be resolved. Especially if EXPO is amd certified but disables sleep option. Edit march 2023: sleep option now successfully works after recent bios update however it causes weird behavior with the fans but that is likely just something with the motherboard. Edit April the 2023: after bios update everything works as it supposed to ... show more
