  • A great camera for those who want a smart home system but with some legacy quirks
Packaging: Pretty clean and simple. Easy to set up. It has almost everything I need to have it set up outdoors. Content: Easy to figure out what goes where. A few notes here. While I'm personally not bothered by the pre-packaged anchors & screws coming in packs of 3 (I'm pretty comfortable with home improvement projects), I find that since the base requires 4 screws (which I believe is overkill, but I'll go into that later), one of the packages should contain 4 anchors & screws so that the average user won't get confused. The power cable is long, but I almost wished it was a little bit longer because I know that It would have benefited to have a much longer usb cable when the outdoor outlet can be pretty far away. I was lucky enough that the place I want to mount the camera is directly above an outlet, but any longer than that would require buying an extra long usb extension cable and something to enclose it to make it weatherproof. I also noted that the insulation of the usb cable seems like it is rated more for indoor use. I won't know how it performs until a year or so down the line to see if the insulation will get damaged. Wall charger was helpful to have, BUT (Huge BUT) the size of the charger is very heavily contradictory to the use of the camera. the overall length of the charger + the USB A plug itself makes it extend out of the wall charger by a significant margin which means it would require users to either find and buy a much smaller usb charger (which adds days to installing the camera) or requires them to be know how to do electrical work to replace an outdoor outlet with a proper outlet that has built in USB ports to make sure it takes minimal amount of space. But this goes against the general set up of the camera where it's supposed to be quick and easy to set up and use. Installation: Pretty easy installation, I recommend using a proper masonry drill bit if you plan to install this on a stucco or brick wall. I recommend a 11/32 drill bit for a general size, but I used a 5/16 drill bit and gently widened the hole until it fits the supplied anchors snugly. Again, I have experience doing home improvement, so it's easy enough for me, but for the average user, it's actually a little more intimidating which can lead to a more frustrating installation experience. Camera base is pretty interesting. As noted previously, I believe that the base itself really doesn't need 4 screws. I think 2 is in fact plenty since the camera is so light. The template was helpful for as well. I almost wished there was an accessory to extend the camera out a bit further though. It will help a lot for anyone who wants to monitor an entryway that shares the same wall as the camera. Set up: Pretty quick set up with the Amcrest Smart Home app. I was able to get it synced and started up within minutes. It is possible to connect this camera to the Amcrest View Pro app. You have to set it up via the Smart Home app first, then use the View Pro app to find connected device. You can access the stream as well as communicate, but you can't change configs. Firmware Configuration: This is a bit frustrating for me because it doesn't have a webGUI to directly access an internal firmware to tweak like other Amcrest cameras that have a webGUI built in. I understand that this is a set up that is supposed to be quick and easy, but the hard part is that I am unable to do various different modifications to it like remotely reset the device or add additional overlay information like custom text and placement. I am also unable to set the default quality to HD and it's always a second tap to see events in HD which isn't as helpful. I think that the camera would benefit from having a more robust set of options and ability to tweak it for those users who are interested in changing things around. Device compatibility: Software is pretty easy to use and it's great for a no fuss set up for customers who don't care to control all aspects of the camera. I wished it had ONVIF but I understand that this product is meant to be part of an ecosystem of products under the same brand. Performance: This one is quick and easy. Camera responds to motion detection very quickly and the day & night quality is very impressive. I wish there was a fisheye correction option here because it is a bit disorienting for now. The spotlight is very bright, but one feedback on the strobe light is that the strobe frequency is very slow. I believe it should be atleast twice as fast if it's meant to disorient or scare people or creatures. MicroSD storage & Siren has not been tested yet, but will update review on a later date. General observations: I see that this camera is meant to compete with Arlo and similar cameras that are supposed to be quick and easy to set up. For the most part it is relatively easy. The few issues here are that While the camera's physical body installation is not difficult, wiring it with the parts that come with it makes the device look and fit weaker than those of the so called "premium" brands. All in all, this is a very solid step towards an ecosystem of Amcrest products that can be unified under one single app similar to Arlo and Nest. I've post 3 pictures: 1) Installation 2) Night shot 3) Day shot ... show more

  • Impressed with this camera, bought more.
I purchased this camera after trying camera systems from Ring and the Netgear Arlo. The Amcrest camera is loads better than either one of those systems. I also own a hardwired POE system that is 4K and the picture quality on this camera is almost as good. I've listed some pros, cons and some general notes about the camera since I purchased it. Pros: - 1080p picture quality is great. - Night night vision is very good. The picture quality in black and white is very clear. - Notifications on my Android smartphone are quick and the video is quick to open when you click. - Wifi range is actually really good. This camera has plenty of signal on the front of my garage with the router (150mbps) in the middle of my house and I have not had any pixelation. The expensive Ring spotlight cameras I tried had signal issues placed at the same spot that caused horrible picture quality that was always pixelated and you couldn't make out what was actually int he picture, especially at night. - I like that it has an indicator light on the front that can be turned on and off. - There is a ton of video settings for the camera. Its actually pretty similar to the settings available on my Amcrest wired POE cameras. - It has a motion schedule. - Motion Sensitivity - You can set motion regions so that you can avoid high traffic areas. - You can get email notifications and email snapshots. - There is also a spot that you can toggle on or off so that the lights or siren will turn on at a motion event. - In the video settings, you can adjust Brightness, Contrast, Hue and Saturation. - Additional settings include rotate the image of the camera, set night vision, speaker volume, mic volume, and the indicator light. - The camera does not require a could subscription to work. Just an sd card is fine. - The camera can continuously record to an SD card or you can get a an Amcrest Cloud subscription to upload the motion events. The Ring Spot Light Cameras and the Arlo system cant do that. I currently have my camera recording to an SD card 24/7 in standard definition, with the motion events being recorded in HD 1080P. This has been working great. I also have the motion events set to upload to the Amcrest Cloud. - With the camera recording in SD mode continuously and the motion events in HD, my 128gb MicroSD card has storage about 20 days of recordings. - ***Continuous recording works great with one hitch. (See Con***) Cons: - When turning on the light on the front of the camera, I don't like that I have to push the light button twice to turn it off. It goes Light on, strobe, light off. The strobe setting after pushing again should be a separate button. - The siren is not very loud at all. - The speaker and the mic used for 2-Way talk are not very loud. It could be 10x louder. - I dislike the constant nag about playing videos on 3g/4g. This really should be a one time setting and then no more notifications. - There's no online web browser website for Edge or Chrome browser to view and save the videos to a PC. - Cloud storage for Amcrest Smart Home cameras is separate from the cloud storage used for Amcrest's wired POE systems. They also require separate apps. This is not a big deal for those that don't already have a wired system like I do from Amcrest. - ***Continuous recording saves to the sd card in 8 minute clips. Two problems with that. 1. You have to wait for the 8 minute recording cycle to complete before you can view the the last 8 minutes. 2. Its not real clear which are the motion recordings in the timeline view of the microSD card continuous recordings. In the timeline its a small blue line that is easy to miss and in the clips, you have to scroll looking at the times to find the ones that aren't every eight minutes, for example 8:01:35. They need something better to identify the motion clips. I do recognize that there is a different screen to view motion events only. Which is very helpful. I just think this could be improved. - I don't see any way to reboot camera from settings. You would need to manually unplug the camera to restart it. This is not a big deal, I would just like a restart option and maybe an option to set a scheduled restart to keep the camera fresh like every Sunday at 2AM... - The cloud service did stop working a few times for me, but I'm chalking that up to a new system with bugs that Amcrest seems to quickly work out. Notes and Ideas: - It would be nice if the the Wifi network selection page showed the wifi signal decibels for the camera to help with placement. It wasn't an issue for me as I didn't have any signal problems, but if it was a long distance placement, a decibel meter would be helpful. - It would be nice if I could tie these cameras into my Amcrest NVR system that I already use for my POE cameras. Use ONVIF or something. - Saving a photo of the motion event to the cloud and MicroSD card and then showing it in the notification bar on my smartphone would be a nice addition. - No IFTTT support. It would be cool if I could use IFTTT or a routine in Alexa or Google Home to make devices do stuff if this cameras senses motion. For example turn on the lights if it senses motion. Overall, I'm very impressed with the video quality most importantly and functions available from this camera. I love that it doesn't require a cloud subscription service to store the video and is able to use a MicroSD card and still function similar to a cloud service. I liked this camera enough that I purchased 3 more to give as gifts this Christmas. ... show more
