  • So much better than Amcrest Surveillance Pro!
I've been using Amcrest cameras for several years and had always used Amcrest Surveillance Pro (free from Amcrest) for monitoring my cameras and reviewing recordings. I was letting each camera record to their own SD cards. The downside to doing this is reviewing the recordings is more tedious because you are reading directly from the cameras SD cards which limits your bandwidth. So playback at 2X or 4X was all but impossible. As I added more cameras, it became clear I needed a more efficient way to manage them. Enter Blue Iris 5. BI5 runs on my PC 24/7. I'm still able to do other work while BI5 runs, so it doesn't require a dedicated machine. BI5 records to the PCs hard drive so playback now is MUCH faster. 8x playback of 6 cameras simultaneously with no problems. The time savings alone made this a worthwhile purchase. In addition saving me time, BI5 has significantly better Motion Detection triggering which means fewer false alarms to review. BI5 is also offering integration with Sentry Smart Alerts which uses artificial intelligence to check if a person is in the frame when motion is detected. If so, you can send an alert email notifying you that a person has been detected. While it is not perfect yet, the fact the BI5 is integrating with such a service makes my security system much smarter. Sentry is a subscription service so, for me, I'll wait on subscribing to Sentry until it gets better. BI5 supports audio triggering as well if your camera has audio. BI5 supports a huge range of cameras and has many features which are more applicable to a larger scale security systems such a grouping of cameras, synchronizing triggers, sub-user creation/management, joystick and digital IO support, etc. All of these features make the initial setup learning curve a little steep. After that, daily use is very easy. I still have my cameras recording to their own SD cards as a backup if something happens to my PC, but live monitoring and scrubbing through recordings is now all done in BI5. ... show more

  • Little support
Before activating, I downloaded the evaluation version. Tried to set up 2 Reolink WiFi cameras to no avail. Emailed Blue Iris support. 3 days later I get a link to a YouTube video. The presenter spoke quite fast and I had to view it numerous times to try and figure out what I was supposed to do. Nothing worked. I again emailed support and 4 days later I got a response offering to remotely look at my cameras with another link to a You Tube video explaining how to set up my cameras for them to access remotely. By this time, my evaluation period was up. I could have requested an extension to the trial period, but since the Reolink program is better than other camera manufacturers I tried, I decided to just send the software back for a refund. I don't understand why they can't provide written instructions for setting the software up with a camera. ... show more

  • Awesome customer service + awesome software = win!!!
I received this product without a product key. Most people would take off a star for this, but Amcrest requested a picture of the inside of the case and swiftly (within the day) sent me the key. This kind of customer service can turn a garbage product into a 5 star product. On that note: This is my second server build directly for Blue Iris software. First build runs 25 POE cameras and this one will run 64 POE cameras. The biggest feature that is much needed from my NVR software is the ability to establish viewing profiles for the cameras which Blue Iris does flawlessly. My kitchen manager gets to see the kitchen and that’s it. Laundry manager gets the laundry room feeds, etc. The web interface is also extremely intuitive and easy to set up...nearly plug and play. The software itself can seem like you need a PHD in software engineering at first glance, but it is pretty straightforward. I honestly would have shelled another $70 dollars for a product key if Amcrest wasn’t able to be AMAZING and send me one when my package was missing it, that is how good the software is. Customer service and product get a 10/5 stars from me! ... show more

  • Blue IRIS is the best NVR software for under $500!
Blue IRIS is the best NVR software I have ever used. It is compatible with any RTSP enabled camera. It does a fantastic job with motion detection and smart home integration including web cams. Is the smartest security system worth far more than the $50 price tag . In fact, This is the best surveillance software you can get for under $500. Simple to setup and use on multiple cameras. The system doubles as a security system by sending images right to my phone when "motion alarms" are triggered. I set the time of day to alarm, and can choose from sound, motion, and many other alarm triggers. On setup , Blue Iris instantly picked up the camera once I gave the IP address/port (I use custom ports on all cameras) and within a few minutes I was recording at full resolution. I couldn't be more pleased with this software! ... show more

  • Amcrest Blue Iris does not include settings for major camera models including their own brand!
The interface on v5 is not intuitive. Yes it works but good luck hunting and pecking for what you're looking for. There was no manual and it was hard to find a PDF of one online. If the company at least had a library of common cameras to chose from in a drop down list I would rank it higher. They don't have an updated one at least. I have at least 4 very common and popular cameras by Amcrest, Reolink and Dlink. Amcrest Blue Iris did not have any of them, not even their own brand! Blue Iris does supply a link to a user forum where you can try to locate the settings. The problem is that these are just settings someone else has tried, not necessarily the best settings. So good luck. It is a good program but much to be desired for sure. ... show more

  • I've installed several surveillance systems using the Blue Iris software...
...and IMO it is one of the best video surveillance packages available. It is feature-rich and the developer is constantly providing updates to make it better. I've paid 5x more for a NVR system that only supported 4 cameras. Blue Iris supports 64 cameras, and from a wide variety of manufacturers. It is easy to setup, configure, and has a very user-friendly GUI and it includes an HTML5 web server (UI3) for remote access. It's not perfect, but when coupled with the integrated AI software it is hard to beat. ... show more
