I needed help to put the base together, but it looks nice and I like the step-on on/off switch. The lampshade looks so cheap and tacky (although easy to put it together) so I need to replace it, thereby negating the cheap price.

This floor lamp is top-notch in many ways. (As a former Tool & Die Maker for 24yrs), I am qualified to speak about quality. All of the parts are machined with care. There are no 'tinny cheap' parts in it. Even the base (that I expected to be of molded plastic) is a cast iron molded part. Heavy and solid. The threading that joins the poles screws together like a breeze. The wiring is as heavy a gauge as I've seen in a lamp, and the socket parts aren't the usual skimpy kind - again, well made. Now for the shade: I was worried that it would be a minor nightmare, but as soon as I started - it was a snap (literally), as the two rings snap easily into the inside of the shade material (perfectly cut), and as soon as you complete the 'circling', the neat little velcro strip seals the deal. The 'wrought iron' twist detailing on the upper post looks hand-crafted. The bulb supplied works as stated - in three 'heat' ranges. The only drawback I found is the 'foot switch' that is cut-in to the wire that runs to the wall. It is difficult to place where you want it because it is light and the twisting of the wire affects that. It seems that the foot switch 'along the wire' was an afterthought. The base casting looks like the underside was originally molded to hold a button switch would come up through the base. A button switch on the base itself, would have been much better. Perhaps a cost-cut was involved. But the button works well, although for me, a wall switch does it. I sat and stared at this floor lamp for a long time. I'm pleased to have it be a bright spot, in what was a darkened, previously unseen, living room corner. In my opinion, this lamp is worth far more than the price. Six Stars! ... show more
