  • LOVE it--what an upgrade from the previous kids kindle paperwhite!
Color: Starlight Reading
I am beyond pleased with the Kindle Colorsoft for kids. At the end of last year I bought myself the newest kindle paperwhite signature and my daughter (then age 7.5) the older model of the kids paperwhite because I thought she would like it and the price was really great. Then the Colorsoft came out and I was waffling if I should have gotten that instead. But at that point, the reviews were making me nervous. When I saw that they came out with a colorsoft for kids that had the longer warranty, came with a case, AND was on sale--I knew I just had to try it. I'm so happy that I did. This is really a great device and honestly the color feature exceeded my expectations. I was ready for very muted colors, but honestly they are not that muted to me at all. It's like reading a color comic page in the paper--which brings back a lot of nostalgia for me. My daughter (now 8.5) is really into graphic novels. We have a lot of physical books and borrow from the library, but honestly space is starting to be an issue and they just weren't the same on the regular kindle paperwhite kids. When we turned this on yesterday--WOW--the graphic novels look amazing!! My daughter spent 30+ minutes reading without any prompting from me. It is also MUCH quicker than the other model kindle paperwhite kids that she has. Everything loaded so easily and I was able to set up my own account on the kindle in addition to her two amazon kids profiles (one for her tablet with different time limits and one for her kindle with unlimited time). The brightness is easy to adjust and it is really easy to read on. I haven't fully tested the battery life, but I expect it to be pretty great because my new paperwhite lasts a month with hours of daily reading. I'm recommending this to all of my friends for either them or their children--this is a great model!! ... show more

  • Excellent product for young readers!
Color: Fantasy River
ABSOLUTELY LOVE this product. My daughter loves reading on it, it has no Internet capability so I don't need to monitor it 24/7. It shows me what she's reading and for how long in the parent app, and lets me approve each new purchase she'd like to make. The setup was pretty much done for me when it arrived! It's crisp, clear, solid color quality for e ink, and fast refresh. Holds a battery charge for a long time, even using the light. It's a little heavier than some ereaders but it doesn't seem to bother my 8yo. Fits well for her hands too. ... show more

  • This is the exact Kindle I always wished for…
Color: Starlight Reading
I got my first Kindle in 2016. It was a 6 inch Kindle with a very nice, very white screen, and it is still working fine after all these years. Later on I bought a paperwhite 11th generation which I have never liked. It is overly sensitive and jumps several pages ahead when I don’t want it to. And the screen color is awful. Unlike so many other people, I prefer a pure white screen like a tablet has. But the 11th generation has a screen that is a ghastly greenish yellow. I hate it! Then one day recently I saw the Kids Colorsoft was on sale for a deep discount. Although I didn’t “need” another Kindle in the home, I bought it. I am very glad that I resisted common sense because this Kindle is completely awesome. It is everything that I always wished the Kindle would be. I am not going to review the Kids aspect. I’m just going to review the Kindle Colorsoft for its own features because everyone in the home uses it. So, going back to my first Kindle over 9 years ago, I always wished it had color. Now this one does have color and I love it. It is not necessary for it to have the vivid color of a tablet. The soft color is perfect and fits in well with the overall feel and color of the pages. As far as the text goes, I am perfectly happy with it. Honestly I cannot tell any difference between the text on the Colorsoft and the text on any of my previous kindles. The text appears as black on a lit background just like any of the other Kindles I have used. The text is not blurry, it is not too light. It looks just the way it should. I especially like the color of the pages. The pages are not a stark white like my oldest Kindle, but neither are they a greenish yellow like my newer Paperwhite. Instead the color of the Colorsoft pages is more of a manila or ivory shade of white—very reminiscent of a brand new paperback. This is why I absolutely do not agree with people who say you don’t need the Colorsoft because you only spend a small amount of time looking at the book covers. The reason I disagree with that is that the color of the page that you are actually reading from is also very very different. As mentioned, the color of the page is vastly different from that of other Kindles, including the Paperwhites. The color of the page on the Colorsoft is an actual soft creamy white color. You get the benefit of the color both when looking at book covers but also when you are reading the book because the pages look and feel like an actual book with paper pages. This makes for very comfortable reading with no distractions. Really awesome. My opinion on this is very firm. You do get the benefit of color all throughout the entire reading experience. These things I have just stated have made me 100% thrilled with reading on the Colorsoft. To me, it is just perfect. Other comments, thoughts. The sensitivity is just right as well. When I tap to go forward to the next page, it goes forward one page just as it should. None of that frustrating going backwards hunting through pages to find the one that it should’ve gone in the first place. Also, if I accidentally touch the Kindle it does not jump forward one page. It only goes forward one page when I make a clear firm tap. There is a slight variation in the color of the pages from top to bottom. I understand this is normal. In other words, the top of each page is slightly more beige and the bottom of each page is slightly more gray. It is a slow gradient from top to bottom that doesn’t bother me because it is subtle. But it is definitely there. Now, battery life. I use my Kindle 3-4 hours each day and I usually keep the light level around 18. This is necessary because I have old eyes. I have the vision of an older person, So I am more comfortable reading with the light turned up. But in the past, I took my Kindle with me on trips where I would not be able to recharge it for 4+ days. With a Paperwhite you can turn off the light completely to save the battery. Then you can read for weeks without recharging. You cannot do that with the Colorsoft. The screen when it is turned off is just too dark. Too dark for me anyway. I cannot distinguish the text at all until the light is turned up to at least 12. And at a 12, it is still too dark to be comfortable. I have to turn the light to an 18 to read comfortably on the Colorsoft. So far this is meaning I must charge it every 4 1/2 days. This is not ideal, but I think this may be just the way it is with a color e-reader. If I leave home for a week, I will have to take one of my older kindles that I can read with the light turned completely off because that is not possible with the Colorsoft. You have to turn the light on in order to be able to read from it. I’m still not sure whether 4 1/2 days is reasonable for my level of reading and lighting. So I do plan to check that out before the 30-day deadline to be sure that my device is working properly. But that does not keep me from loving the Colorsoft. I mean, I’m really crazy about it! I am really happy with it! I am totally 100% comfortable reading from it. There is nothing about it that is distracting. So far, I haven’t noticed any difference in the software between this and the 11th generation Paperwhite. My needs are very basic and I don’t make use of many of the advanced features that the software allows. I have read comments in the ratings from people who are upset about one thing or another that is different in the software from previous generations. I do not detect these things. I read for pleasure alone so my needs are simple. Therefore I cannot address some of those issues that other people seem upset about. My books download from Amazon and from my local libraries just exactly as they should. For example, I just downloaded, read, and returned the nearly 600 page new book by David Pogue: Apple, The First 50 years. I am easily able to move back-and-forth between the kids Kindle and the adult e-reader. It is a simple matter of putting in the right code. As far as size, it is only slightly bigger than the Paperwhite. I think that satisfaction with the size of your Kindle is a personal matter. Some people want a lighter weight 6 inch Kindle that they can tuck into a small bag. Some people like the 6.8 or 7 inch readers. I have been happy with all of them. But I don’t take the Colorsoft out of the house. It is too expensive to take a chance of losing, so I only take my oldest Kindle out of the house to read in doctors offices and so on. I read complaints in the ratings about the on/off switch being on the bottom. Since every Kindle ever made has had the switch on the bottom, I think we need to get used to it. But it is not ideal. It makes a heck of a lot more sense to put the switch on the top where it would be so much easier to operate and where it would not get in the way. But I have always put my kindles in a case, so I never have had to deal with accidentally having the Kindle turn off while I am reading it. I use a slide-in folio case from Fintie. The cover opens all the way to the back and has a stand so I can read comfortably without holding it while eating, etc. So the location of the switch has not been an issue for me. It is a bigger issue for me having the charging location on the bottom. I would so much prefer if the switch AND the charging slot were on the top like on the Kindle Fire. That way you don’t have to turn the entire thing upside down to charge it! So you can number me among the people who would pressure Amazon to put the switch AND the charging slot on the top of the Kindle rather than the bottom. But that is not unique to the Colorsoft. As far as flashing pages, don’t the pages stop flashing when you turn off Page Refresh? If not, then that is definitely a serious problem. I have not had that happen with my Kids Kindle software. ... show more

  • Game Changer for Parents and Kids
Color: Fantasy River
As a parent to two young children (ages 5 and 3), this Kindle Colorsoft Kids has been a total game changer. I never realized how much easier bedtime reading could be until now. No more fumbling with physical books in the dark, balancing a phone light, or flipping pages awkwardly — this device eliminates all of that. The screen is fantastic. The colors and images look like real paper, not an overly bright or saturated OLED phone display — exactly what it’s supposed to be: paper-like, comfortable, and engaging for kids. My children love it. The Kids+ subscription is another huge win. There are countless books, including popular titles like Paw Patrol, that download almost instantly. We get through so many more stories this way compared to the old-fashioned method. I also wanted something I could use myself, and this works perfectly for that. It’s essentially the same model as the regular Colorsoft, but with the bonus of a case, a great warranty, and the Kids+ subscription. Setup was seamless — the device is tied to your Amazon account right out of the box. Creating a kids profile and linking the subscription takes just a minute, and switching between kids and adult profiles is quick and secure with a PIN. I’m blown away by how well this works for both my kids and me. Zero issues with the screen, great selection of content, and a very thoughtful design overall. Highly recommend — this is an awesome product. ... show more
