  • Stopped working in 6 months
Watch looks nice, I liked the very readable watch face, but the battery ran out in 6 months ( I assume it was the battery as it slowly started running slower and slower). I didn't get the warranty so can't return it - I would regard paying extra for the warranty as mandatory if you're going to get one. All-in-all I would expect a watch to last at least a year. ... show more

  • A Mediocre Watch That Can't Compete on Quality or Price
Pros: Relatively cheap Good quality movement (Hattori PC21J, i.e. Seiko) 3-year warranty Has an expected amount of weight to it (may be a con for some) Cons: Second hand does not hit indices properly Basic, high polish brass case and strap Uninspired dial Fit and finish are just serviceable Much better options at similar price points (paid $31, plus tax) The green dial is a basic sunburst pattern, but in bright light comes off as slightly dulled. The major indices appear to be discrete parts, but upon inspection quickly reveals that they are not aligned properly. I'm uncertain if the dial itself is properly even, but I think any crookedness may be an illusion caused by the misaligned indices. The minute indices are applied upon the dial, the tell being an indice that failed to cover a speck of the dial. On the other hand, this wasn't dust or debris, and I don't see any under the watch crystal. The hands themselves appear to be somewhat roughly cut, and the metal itself doesn't seem to have any polish, just being cut so that the grain of the metal is horizontal across the hands. The color of the metal is likely inherent to it, as looking at the cut cross-sections at the end of a hand reveals no discontinuity or unevenness, but I can't rule out electroplating. The minute hand is all over the place when it comes to hitting the indices; sometimes, it's almost spot-on, then it will hit between two indices, but most often is just hitting somewhere in between two indices. This is unacceptably poor quality control, as I have $16 and $41 dollar watches that I purchased at the same time, and they seem to always be hitting the indices properly. The watch case and bracelet are a simple high polish. They must be made of brass, not steel, as neither are magnetic. Brass will scratch the easiest of materials used for watch cases. The caseback itself is stainless steel. It's likely the silver-colored variants of this watch are nickel plated brass. While more durable than brass, it will eventually wear away to reveal the brass underneath. The bracelet surprisingly uses solid links, although they were cheaply cast. A major issue is that the last "link" of the bracelet is integrated into the lugs, and the bracelet connects to the outer ends of it, so replacing (and finding a replacement for) the bracelet at minimum will not be as easy as most. Speaking of the caseback, it's a snap-on. Unfortunately, the gap where you insert the caseback opening tool to remove the caseback is largely hidden under a lug. This does not seem to be a design defect, as the engraved caseback, which includes "Amazon Essentials," is properly oriented in that position. The caseback mentions "PC21J7" on it, which tells us that the Japanese movement is a Hattori PC21J (I'm uncertain what the 7 means), which makes it a Seiko product. The movement is perhaps higher quality than many of watches that cost about the same as the Amazon Essential one, as its +/-20 sec/month accuracy compares well with the +/-30 sec/month you may find amongst some of its competitors. The battery life is also rated at 3 years, although bear in mind the crown was not separated from the case with a placer, meaning it has been running before it's gotten into your hands. It takes a SR626SW/377 coin battery or equivalent. The movement is cheap (likely cost Amazon a couple dollars at most, in the volume they purchase in), but good and from a top watchmaking and movement production company, if nothing special. Is this Amazon Essentials watch better than the no-name or off-brand watch brands (e.g., George. Uncertain if someone into watches was thinking George Daniels, because no one buying one of these would know who he was)? Since those have been known to break within just months, yes. Is it better than stuff like Geoffrey Beene watches you can find in a department store? Probably. At least you won't find any fake chronograph subdials that you can find on the other watches mentioned in this paragraph. The Amazon Essentials dial (which Amazon oddly leaves naked) is going to be outclassed by Geoffrey Beene, et. al., though, and I don't have any of those brands/non-brands to compare feel and wearability to. The 3-year warranty is worth notice, as other watches at a similar price point generally have 1-year warranties. Will I keep this watch? Probably, as I purchased it more out of morbid curiosity than anything else. It's a quirky thing for Amazon, which has no watchmaking pedigree whatsoever, to try to make (or at least buy and sell under their brand) watches. It's pretty blah, Amazon didn't try to add or take away anything unique or interesting. I'd love for Amazon to break into the watch industry, expand the customer base, and while they aren't charging $100+ or $200+ for a $5 or $20 watch like some new fashion watch brands, their efforts are tepid at best, and clearly shows they are not talking to or marketing to us watch people, or people that can become watch people. Get a Casio, or look at Armitron, and/or consider slightly more expensive watches from brands like Seiko, Citizen, or Timex. Except somewhat for Seiko, all of those brands start low or relatively low, and go to what most people would consider to be expensive for a watch. Because if this is your first watch, it will also probably be your last watch. And that would be horrible. ... show more

It is a nice watch. I do get a lot of compliments. I had to replace the battery after one week. I would recommend this watch for the price.

Color: Silver
Just what I was looking for in an oversized everyday watch. It is lightweight and a bit shiny but figured the shine will fade in time. I did have to find an alternative to have it sized since did not work per instructions.
