Ever heard of a cloud chamber? It is a simple and safe experiment that you can do at home to observe ionizing radiation particles (alpha, beta, and gamma) that are naturally occurring in the environment around us. For this, you need high purity alcohol and 99% isopropyl is just perfect. You also need black construction paper, a small container (I used a petri dish), dry ice (handle carefully), and an absorbent material (I used coffee filters with the flat center cut out. Take the small container (such as a petri dish). Cut black construction paper so that it fits on the bottom plate but don't allow it to end up raised. It is best to cut a little more around so that it goes in flat. Take an absorbent material (the cut coffee filter) and wrap it around itself and then use it to line the perimeter of the petri dish. Saturate but don't flood the black construction paper and coffee filter with the alcohol. Place the prepared petri dish over dry ice, but be careful not to burn yourself with the dry ice. What you should now observe is a saturated cloud of isopropyl alcohol vapor. Use a flashlight and position it in a way that allows you to see the vapor cloud. If you see it, then you did everything right. If you don't, give it a few minutes. If the alcohol dries, add some more. If it freezes, you may have to start again. Continue observing the vapor cloud and you will at one point start seeing some trails of the vapor being disturbed by ionizing radiation particles. These trails are of varying characteristics with some being very short and faint and others long and thick corresponding with the different types of particles. On Youtube you can observe videos of this same experiment but with a radioactive material placed on the center to emit these particles continuously. However, it is dangerous to handle even mildly radioactive materials. Such particles are naturally generated in the environment in low levels and with some patience, you will see them.
