If you buy those big heavy ugly uncoated iron weights (not these), sometimes you'll look at them and think "Forget it, I'll lift them some other time". Because that type of weight can feel cold and rough, and if you only get the heavy ones you may view them as hard to get started/motivated. The point of getting weights is to use them, not to buy and feel macho looking at them sitting in the corner, while they collect dust. These weights come in a variety of sizes and colors, they are very attractive and feel good in your hands. I bought the 8 pounds (each) red and the 12 pounds (each) blue. The reds are nice to get started in your workout, if you are a man you'll likely find them easy but that's the point - they get you started easily, they don't intimidate you or make you feel like they will be an ordeal. After starting with a low weight like the reds, you can move to the blues or whatever you want, however you want. I would guess that women will want to start at much lower weights than the 8 pound reds, and fortunately those are available too at great prices and attractive colors. I found the weights to be nicely finished, though there were some minor spots where I chose to sandpaper them down slightly to be even smoother. I wouldn't say that this is necessary but you might want to consider doing it. If they made some 16 lb dumbells I might consider buying them too, but as of now I'm very satisfied with the 8's and 12's. They do have some nice looking 15's (forest green) but I'm not sure those are enough of a bump up from the 12's to be worthwhile for me, and the 20's would be too heavy for what I want. Overall these are a tremendous value, especially when you consider the free shipping from Amazon on what will be a heavy package.

They feel comfortable to hold and have a good grip, which is important when you're working out. The hexagon shape stops them from rolling around, which is handy. They're also made of vinyl, so they're durable and easy to clean. I've been using them for a while now and they're still in great condition.

These were exactly what I expected them to be. The vinyl coating was easy to grip and didn't slip in my hands. Mine didn't have any kind of odor, unlike a cast iron set I have, which smelled like burnt chemicals for a few weeks. My only grievance is that the vinyl coating on one of mine split a few days after recieving, before using them very much at all. I'm worried it will slowly come unpeeled like a heavy blue banana. Hopefully that one was just a dud. Otherwise, the product is fine!
