  • 5.0 out of 5 stars Not sturdy enough for a 20lbs cat.
The product is perfect for smaller cats, material is nice. It was too small for my 20 lbs cat, it was not stable on carpet.

  • 3.0 out of 5 stars Plenty of Variety for Kittens and Cats, But Came with Faulty and Defective Pieces
I foster kittens and I purchased this cat tree as a replacement to my old kitten room cat tree. My requirements involved dimensions, maximum number of play and sleep surfaces, variety/interest of components, and durability. PROS: It is the correct dimensions and it has quite a lot of play and sleep surfaces for its size. The components are varied and the kittens find them quite interesting and exciting to explore. My adult cats (for whom most of the parts of the cat tree are too small) also would not stop climbing and playing with this cat tree, so from purely a feline perspective, this cat tree is awesome, but definitely better for kittens or small cats. CONS: I rated this three stars for assembly because we had to improvise due to missing and damaged parts (more below). I rated it two stars for sturdiness because of the issues with the ladder (see pictures, plus description below) and hammock (more below). I rated it four stars for stability because right now it seems stable, but the problem with one of the support poles (more below) means we don't have complete confidence that it will remain stable in the long run. While it's too early to say whether it will be durable, the quality of the parts is not great. The tree comes with a ladder that needs to be assembled, and the ladder was important to me because it will allow smaller kittens to easily start climbing the cat tree right away. Both of the long support pieces of the ladder (see images), which are wrapped in the same grayish-blue cloth as much of the rest of the tree, are snapped, broken, or maybe cut apart. The bottom parts that support the ladder from the floor (while also attached to the underside of one of the tree's main platforms) are basically broken and floating loose in the cloth, which means they're completely incapable of support and will probably rip through the cloth within a few weeks of use or less. Because the ladder is defective, we've elected not to use it at all. It's not a matter of IF it will fail, but WHEN. One of the support poles also came with a defective piece of hardware screwed into it, and while we were able to pull it out enough to attach it to the platforms, it's partially stripped and we're not sure it will have the strength to support kitten play in the long term. We're hoping that by being sandwiched between two platforms and with the support of the top weight and other three support poles, it will be okay. Finally, the hammock attaches, via hooks, to pieces of twine that are stapled to the underside of the middle platform. These really should be hardware rings that the hammock attaches to, because the kittens are going to wreak havoc on that hammock and pull it down within a few weeks. I'm really mystified by the choice of twine for purposes of supporting a cat hammock, because this simply is not a remotely durable choice of materials. SUMMARY: So all that said, do the kittens like it? They LOVE it! So do my adult cats, who could not resist climbing all over it while we were assembling it. The hammock, cloth basket, condo, and tunnel are really far too small for my biggest (17 lb. Maine Coon) cat, but this fact did not stop him from trying out every single feature and refusing to get off of the top platform when it was time to move the cat tree into the kitten room. Once assembled, it's interesting and attractive to cats, which makes it an absolute win. If Amazon can get a handle on the quality control issues, I would absolutely give this product five stars because all of the kittens and cats at our house love it. But given the assembly challenges and durability issues, it's only three stars for the price. I'm including all of this information in the review for quality control and future buyer awareness purposes. Note that I did NOT ask Amazon for a replacement because we already had it half assembled when we discovered the issues with the defective pole hardware, and we didn't initially feel it was worthwhile to request a replacement on the basis of the ladder issues alone. We didn't discover the shoddy hammock connection twine until the final step in our assembly -- when that twine fails, we'll purchase and insert hooks to reattach the hammock. If you buy this, check all your pieces carefully before you assemble anything, in case you discover too many pieces are defective to justify assembly. ... show more

  • 3.0 out of 5 stars Purchased two years ago, need new one
I bought this cat tower two years ago because I thought it was a super good deal for the size compared to other cat towers. I will say that it has lasted this long and only this week did my cats finally start tearing off the scratch posts and they started coming undone. I know this is pretty normal for cat trees. The biggest thing I wanted to point out is that the carpet on there is not carpet, and it is not meant for a cat tower. It's light and fluffy almost like a blanket, and it attracts animal fur. The fur gets ingrained in the fabric of the material on there and it is impossible to get out. The thing is super dirty at this point, and now the posts are shredding, so I have to get a new one. Also, without the ladder, it is very difficult for cats to get on the tower. They have to jump from the floor to the top level in one hop, as there is no access from the middle level to the top level. I've seen both of my cats fall off of it... Last but not least, the very top part of the tower does not line up with the rest of the levels and sticks out pretty far. The whole tower has to sit about 3 inches away from the wall because of it. All in all, the thing lasted a lot longer than I thought it would, but there have still been some annoyances with maintenance/ownership. ... show more

  • 5.0 out of 5 stars My cats love it!
I've owned cats for most of my life, and always wanted to get my pets a cat tower. I never invested in one until now. The AmazonBasics cat tree hooked me by being an excellent value for the price. Since my poor kitties have to live in the (extremely spacious) basement until we can complete our much-delayed-due-to-COVID home renovations, I wanted to make them a little more comfortable, so I purchased this tower to give them a place to perch and play. I was afraid that they would be, well, stereotypical cats and prefer the box to the cat tree. Wrong! I'm glad to report that they IMMEDIATELY took to their new tower. I assembled the bottom half upstairs (where the lighting is better) and brought that down to finish the job, as it's too heavy for me to carry once fully assembled, and by the time I got back downstairs <1 minute later with the remaining parts, all 3 kitties were on the base part. No catnip required! Assembly itself wasn't too hard. The directions were pretty clear, and the pieces went together easily. The only part that was even slightly difficult was getting the perch to screw onto the post at the very top: I just could not get it to catch the thread and had to have my taller partner do it. Once it caught, it went on smoothly. I've always been put off by the gross-looking plush fake fur coverings or the wobby construction of other cat trees, but this one appeals more to me. It is nice and sturdy. The material is more like a faux-wool, and does not show messes as much. My cats have had this tree for a few months now and have yet to destroy it! They still love it, and sleep on it every day. One cat loves the little dish/cup bed, one likes to get in the tiny hut (which is hilarious, as he's huge), and one likes to hide in the tunnel. I have seen them use every part except maybe the hammock. I would definitely recommend this to anyone wanting to give their cats a little more exercise and a comfy place to hide out! ... show more
