YIKES! doctors have a government (police-state) enforced monopoly on health care. is it really so unreasonable to think that the same government (allegedly of the people, by the people, and FOR the PEOPLE) should set limits on the fees and profits of doctors/hospitals/drug companies? the FIRST argument that you will hear if you voice this idea is that qualified people won't go into medicine and won't become doctors if the government restricts the profit motive. that is equivalent to saying that the best predictor of whether someone will be a great healer is their level of greed. nothing could be more ludicrous. in fact, the only sensible opinion is exactly the opposite, ie, if we remove greed as a motivating factor (and the total lack of conscience that so frequently accompanies it), the only people that will want to become doctors are those that genuinely want to help their fellow humans. won't THOSE people actually become the most qualified doctors of all? i think yes. nurses are paid far less than doctors, yet there is no shortage of nursing students. and the answer to the high cost of medical school is for the government to pay the cost for any QUALIFIED applicant, in exchange for 4 years of practice wherever the gov't assigns them, thus bringing qualified doctors to underserved areas. concommitantly, all medical research should be conducted by independent scientists (academics) who are NOT employed by OR funded by big pharma, with the research all funded by the gov't. the benefits are twofold. first, we would get CURES instead of treatments. very recently, a vice-president of Glaxo had the audacity to blatantly state on MSNBC that their goal was to make cancer a "manageable condition," which is just double-talk for saying that they DON'T WANT to cure you, they want to make you an addict, hooked for the rest of your life on their outrageously overpriced patented dope, which only relieves the symptoms WITHOUT EVER curing the underlying condition. this is their stated goal, not just for cancer, but for ALL diseases and conditions. and not only Glaxo, but ALL of big pharma. stop and think like a big pharma CEO for just one minute, and you will realize this is the only paradigm that makes business sense. and not only are cures NOT researched, anyone outside the big pharma establishment who DOES find a cure is persecuted mercilessly. there are hundreds of historical examples for any doubters who care to learn the truth. second, when new cures or even new treatments are discovered, they will not be the "intellectual property" of a soulless corporation that will exploit them for the maximum profit, they will belong to EVERYONE, and drug manufacturors would be forced (by free-market competition) to sell them at a REASONABLE mark-up over actual cost of production, which is generally no more than a few cents per pill. in other words, all drugs would be available in low-cost generic form from the first day that they are approved. and finally, we must have a national health insurance program that puts an end to rich corporations PROFITING from the misfortune and suffering of others. medicare and medicaid currently provide healthcare more efficiently to those who qualify (a greater percent of each healthcare dollar goes directly to healthcare costs) compared to patients covered by the private insurance industry. but there must be big changes to the existing gov't plans; - specifically patients should bear the burden of filling out and submitting the paperwork to claim benefits for treatment, while providers would be PROHIBITED from billing the gov't directly, because this is the ONLY cost-effective way to police the system for fraud, which is currently rampant and taking a huge bite out of every healthcare dollar. at the same time, patients MUST have the FREEDOM to choose WHATEVER form of treatment they wish, and to receive it from whomever they wish, and NOT be limited by the AMA or FDA. it is the PATIENT'S well-being or very life that is on the line, and ultimately it is the PATIENT (taxpayer) who is paying for the treatment, so how can anyone justify denying treatment or payment because the therapy is not "approved" by big business or big gov't? my life; my money paying for it; MY CHOICE! the end result of these changes, taken together, would be that the real cost of health care for everyone would plummet to a fraction of the present corporate controlled and taxpayer subsidized abomination, while the quality of the healthcare dispensed and the proportion of people receiving it would substantially increase at the same time. that's MY 2¢. ... show more

    • Being the definitive medicine book by also including the alternative advises.
Beside to this book, I at the same time, half a year ago, also bought a copy of the "Mosby's Dictionary of Medicine, Nursing & Heath Professions". But while the Mosby's is mostly a lexicon explaining what's hiding in the actual words, and besides is showing to where the authorities now have reached, and are accepting, when it come to medicine. Opposite to this the "Alternative Medicine" besides also brings many further advices telling much of all of the known alternative medical methods which also now a days are being used for solving the actual medical problems. And in this book, based on the knowledge and experience from more than 400 persons, M.D. and Ph.D., we in many cases are told the names of doctors who have come with the actual advise. And in most of the cases we as proposals are getting a lot of different possibilities. My reason for buying this book is that through out history we again and again have seen how authorities for years have waited to start on using healing methods which persons have shown to be better than what until then had been used and thought. So therefore to be up to date much knowledge we will be missing if we only are owing books like the Mosby's. Looking back on history we for example 350 years ago had an English captain who on his ship always gave fruit to the seamen, and after having been around on all of the oceans returned home to England with all of his sailors still being alive, opposite to the normal only being 50 %. And then around 200 later a person in the English navy proved how necessary it was to get fruit while being out on the oceans, not yet knowing the C vitamin. But after this it took more than 40 years before the English navy started giving fruits. And for example we still are remembering that when Linus Pauling 40 years ago started talking about how much C vitamin helps for many things, how the medical firms then opposite to this even were telling us that we might die if we got too much C vitamin! Or how for example, at nearly the same time, Kilmer S. McCully, M.D., after some years were fired from Harvard Medical School, because having discovered the potential importance in Homocysteine, and thereby disproved much on what earlier had been "proved" by some colleges, and what was internationally thought. So for being up to date, and thereby having the possibility for getting the best doctor advises, or maybe controlling what being told from doctors, we need to read in books like "Alternative Medicine.     • Biased analysis of alternative medicine
1. While the book has glowing reports of all areas of alternative medicine and refers to many hundreds of articles there is not a single mention of a research article that has had negative results, of which there are many. From the authors’ point of view, anything negative said about alternative medicine is either a conspiracy by drug companies and physicians against alternative medicine for financial reasons; or a blind following of the idea that if a practitioner ahead of his time does not uphold the standards of the community, his practice should be condemned; or that anyone with negative results simply hasn’t performed the procedure correctly. There is no suggestion that any of the articles describing positive results may be poorly controlled studies, or that anecdotal reports are often open to question. What the authors appear to have done is simply to report as fact everything positive they have heard about alternative medicine, with no consideration about reliability, while avoiding mention of anything negative. That is biased and dishonest. 2. One of the most significant questions about both western and alternative medicine is the degree to which the placebo effect and spontaneous cure play a role. I found no discussion or even mention of these factors in the index or any place in the book, except for one anecdotal report in veterinary medicine in the which an animal with spinal paralysis was reported in the newspaper to have been cured by acupuncture. The authors are quick to point out that this could not have been a placebo effect, ignoring the possibility that it could have been a misdiagnosis with a spontaneous cure (a sprain?), or an exaggerated and misleading report, which is the problem in general with anecdotal reports. 3. Out of the gate, the authors issue the standard criticism of western medicine for focusing on treating symptoms, while alternative medicine focuses on treating root causes. This is nonsense. Western practitioners are trained at the outset to look for vascular, inflammatory, infectious, neoplastic, degenerative, intoxicant, congenital, allergic, autoimmune, traumatic, endocrine, metabolic and psychological roots of a disorder. Moreover, in medical school, students are trained in a complete history and physical, to look at the patient holistically and to then refer to a specialist if necessary once the root cause is determined or could not be found. If the western general or family practitioner is not looking at the patient holistically, it is not because of something intrinsic in western philosophy that dismisses this, but because of the limited time the practitioner has to spend with the patient, a significant problem in western medicine, but one not due to underlying philosophy. And what root causes does alternative medicine seek out? Problems with meridiens? Subluxations? Doshas based on earth, air, fire, and water? Energy fields? All of these have no scientific basis. Any field of quackery will have positive anecdotal reports simple due to the placebo effect and spontaneous cure. This goes for western medicine as well. But the book does not discuss the placebo effect or spontaneous cure even superficially. 4. The book claims on the cover that “over 400 leading physicians explain their treatments.” Who are these leading physicians? I would have expected a multiauthor book, but there is no mention of who wrote the chapters. Perhaps the authors just added up the number of people they cited or listed in the reference section who issued positive reports. ... show more

This book is a great place to start if you are looking to expand your knowledge of healing practices. It explains various types of medical practices and gives you examples of their application for many common ailments. It's best used as a reference to find therapies that work for you. It is not a diagnostic tool but if you know what's wrong you may find some great tips in this book. ... show more

    • A lot of info!
I have had this book for at least six months and have yet to work my way through all of it. I have read through a number of chapters, as the mood strikes, and I haven't made it through a page yet that didn't strike me deeply in some way, and change the way I look at something important in my life. I very much feel that reading this book has increased my knowledge, as well as my quality of life where I applied this knowledge. This is not simply for the "hippies" and the alternative-medicine geeks like myself, this is something I truly believe anyone could find something useful and positive in. This book also weighs as much as a toddler, so it's not some BS pamphlet trying to get your attention- this is legitimately an educational text, and I cannot recommend this highly enough. ... show more

I got this book because I am most definitely interested in my health and wanted to learn more about alternative medicine, and I have found it very informative, useful and comprehensive. It is a huge book and quite large so don't think you can take it on the bus with you unless you think of using it as a self-defense mechanism ;) This book is great, as it answers all the questions one may have on each different type of alternative treatment, and the answers are actually done by the experts on the field. It also uses studies that have proven the effects of the different therapies and gives a bit of history on each therapy.     • 2nd Edition is Excellent!
I had the first edition of Alternative Medicine and felt it was great. But, too often recommended supplements did not give doses. As newer therapies and research developed, it became a bit behind the times. The second edition is outstanding and I see that supplements usually have recommended amounts. I love the additional therapies. There is so much information it takes time to put it all together but is surely worth that effort. The Internet is a great source of info but you never know who is a crackpot out to make money. The editors of Alternative Medicine have done their homework. They present a wide range of information to choose from but it appears to me that they have left out the crackpots. It is a solid resource of information that I can assimilate along with allopathic recommendations from my M.D. I give it five stars! ... show more

Loaded with excellent information from top authorities in alternative medicine. Covers too much info to adequately describe here. Highly recommend for anyone that is in the alternative medicine field, even nurses, doctors! Written for layperson to understand most of the info too. Recommend that everyone take an interest in looking at ways to help themselves other than prescription drugs! There is so much more out there that is proven to help as much or more than what your regular doctor was trained to tell you! Not suggesting that anyone not see their doctor or take their medicine....just saying that there can be better and more answers if you look! ... show more

This is a very large book that is loaded with information. It is easy to read, covers almost any condition you can think of and gives several choices of alternative treatment. Even if you aren't interested in alternative medicine, you will like like the extensive medical information in this book. It clearly explains, in laymans terms, your body, how it works, medical conditions and many alternative treatments.
