I lived on a coffee farm in Kenya for over 10 years. If you like quality coffee it must be arabica variety, not robusta. Kenya coffee is grown at high altitude, generally over 7,000 feet above sea level. Arabica coffee is bold in flavor but not bitter. Growing arabica coffee is very labor intensive and the beans must be hand picked at just the right time. These coffee trees are pruned and often grow under larger shade trees. I sometimes purchase coffee from Tanzania which is called peaberry. It is also an excellent coffee. It is hit and miss to find Kenya coffee in supermarkets. But it is always available from Amazon at a reasonable price.

At first I wasn't sure what to think about this coffee. I was used to folders which you know is a commercialized kind of run-of-the-mill coffee. Although I really do like Folgers I feel like the taste is pretty smooth. When I first tried this I felt like the taste was a little strange to me. It wasn't a bad taste it was just different I guess I wasn't used to it. But the more I drank it the more I really enjoyed it. It's very smooth with almost like a slightly nutty flavor. I will reorder it again it just took me a minute to get used to it. I think I will have it occasionally as a treat.

I love this extra dark french! It's the absolute best smoky roasty toasty yummyness in my morning cup!! However this order they sent 1 extra dark French whole beans and I ordered 2..but the 2nd one was ground med dark organic sierra...it isn't what I ordered and I just spent a half an hour trying to send in the return and it won't let me..ughh

More of a medium roast flavor profile and chocholatey vs a lighter roast flavor profile. I brewed with pour over V60 and clever dripper and I found that pour over was slightly more defined. Overall not a bad coffee on a budget. Its a safe intro to lighter roast if you want to show others what the difference is between big brand roasts and specialty roasts. Though I know this is not "specialty" perse. It is still a good enough alternative to keep on hand for those days you just want a good medium roast.

If it's cheap, then expect the expiration date to be around 2 months. Since Allegro doesn't do a roast date (ugh, supermarkets demand that so customers don't find out it's old), at roughly the 2 month expiration date, the beans were probably sitting around 22 months. I got mine for $6, with a 1.5 months to go before expiration. It tasted ok, but we will never really know how the beans should taste because they are too old. Wouldn't buy again, will try to buy it locally or order direct.

This Grand Cru coffee by Allegro is the most aromatic yet not sweet that I've ever had. Whole Foods used to carry it. Now they carry a similar, but not the same, type of coffee which just is not as good. I hope that Amazon never discontinues it.
