Before ordering this one I already an echo show 8”, first gen. I was about to buy another one when I got an add saying that I could pre-order a second gen. I could not find a good comparison anywhere so I asked myself, should I pay 20$ more for an unknown. I did and spoiler alert, it is worth it, kinda. Positives: - The new camera features are great. The camera can track you and center you for video calls, real time, and it does it accurately. - Speaking of the camera, the camera upgrade is insane. Went from 1MP to 13MP. - The processor is supposed to be much more powerful. Looking at the new camera features, understanding where you are in a group of people and tracking you accordingly, it is noticeable. However, given that a lot of the actions on the device are web based, there is not a huge difference on other apps. The responsiveness of the touchscreen is perhaps a bit better but it was good to begin with. - The unit will go to low power mode when idle, helping you save a penny here and there… - Several privacy features. The stop listening button we have grown used to. The camera can be manually closed shut for privacy. When remote viewing through the show, there is a warning message, etc... Negatives: - Amazon did not learn from their mistakes. Just like with the Show 10”, the power cord is white for every unit, whether the unit is black or white. The camera shutter, is white too. - The 3.5 jack is gone. Other thoughts: The sound quality___ One of the items on my wish list for this one was an improved audio quality. The sound quality improved over the previous gen, I think, but I would say its marginal if that, not enough to even be sure it did. The white cord___ What I hate the most about my Echo Show 10 is the white cord on a black unit. Since I fell for it with the Show 10 and white would go well with my decor, I preemptively went for a white unit, to eliminate the eyesore, in case Amazon did not learn from their mistakes. To a certain extent, I was secretly hoping the cord would be black so I could swap it with my Show 10” and fix two problems with one move. Nope, its white. Even with a warning from me that it could happen, a friend went for the charcoal one and he is still fuming. So, if you are like me that the white cord on a black unit would drive you crazy, and you are going for it, order the white one. The environment___ If you are still on the fence about this one, be aware that 2nd gen uses recycled materials on its manufacturing. To me this is a selling point. _____________________________ TLDR, 1) If you use it a lot for video calls, the improved camera and improved camera features, makes it a worthy upgrade. If this is not your cup of tea, waiting for a prime day sale on a previous gen might be better. 2) If having a white cord on a black unit is something that would drive you crazy, get the white one or go for the previous gen. Updated (JUNE2022): It appears that Amazon did learn from their mistakes. Another friend I warned about the cord, told me he didn’t really cared and went for the black one. Well, he got it with a black cord. Given that to me this was the worst negative, I just raised it one star. ... show more

  • HUGE disappointment...updated to 5 STARS after receiving a different device!!! HUGE disappointment...updated to 5 STARS after receiving a different device!!!

I was anxiously awaiting the delivery of my Echo Show 8. I got this for a good price on an Amazon deal, so I placed a rather large (expensive) order to start the transition of fully integrated "smart" home. This order included 12 smart recessed lights, 18 smart light bulbs and this device that I was hoping would pull everything together and allow me to be "hands free" and enjoy all the wonderful things I've heard the echos have to offer. We had issues with it right out of the box, sadly. I will list the pros and cons: Pros: Great price( amazon deal), fast delivery, well packaged Set up manual minimal, easy to read Size of unit was great, display is clear Initial set up was easy. Synced my other smart devices easily. Cons: •Voice recognition has not worked at all, ever so I am unable to "talk" to Alexa. Which really bummed me out. I pictured cleaning my kitchen, requesting some wholesome music for the entire family, "Alexa, play WAP" 🤣 ok, maybe a different choice then "Alexa, play Jason Mraz." ... nothing. Of course I also signed up for unlimited Amazon music so that I could hear the actual song I wanted and be the Dj of my house when the mood struck. I attempted to set up our profiles, first starting with the voice recognition. I must've turned that 🎤 off and on 50x trying to figure out this thing. I started to feel like maybe it was "user error" and I was missing something. So, I "googled" ( which is obviously a verb this day in age) troubleshooting options and I tried EVERYTHING it suggested to no avail. I noticed my bar light was orange which suggests connectivity issues, so I went down that troubleshooting path...nothing. I restarted my router, I made sure i was on 2.4gHz not the 5gHz (though it had issues even staying on that frequency) despite my internet connection reading "excellent".I strategically went through every possible avenue I could to attempt to correct the issues and ended up spending HOURS ( literally 10 hours) attempting to troubleshoot. I factory reset it probably 8-10 times. Literally nothing worked. • Screen calibration is slightly off and slow to respond. It didn't matter if I touched it lightly, with gentle pressure, a quick tap or a long firm press...it wouldn't register and was delayed 99% of the time. • Has a mind of its own. I would select a screen, for instance, a receipe ...it would initially open then within seconds close out and go to a different screen. Maybe it was catching up with the previous 10 request I had tapped on the screen, but weird that it did that only after my last selection and I had not selected what it was closing out and opening up. • Speakers aren't great. Kind of muted sounding. I only know this because the only way I was ever able to use it was through Alexa app on my phone. I did also contact chat support through Amazon and when it suggested all of the same things I had been trying repeatedly I just decided I was not going to continue in this maddening process. So, I finally gave in after less than 24 hours with this thing and requested a return. I was only able to return it for a refund, not return for a replacement. Which, is fine with me..I am researching older models. So, today I have it all packaged up and am anxiously awaiting my UPS pickup so I can receive my Amazon credit. I may go with a previous version of the Echo. I'm not totally against it...I may have just had a 🍋 because there are those in every bunch. However, if the 2nd one doesn't work out, I will just be keeping my home smart devices controlled on my phone and purchase smart speakers to install throughout my house so I can jam out and just print my recipes the old fashioned way 🤣 or use my awesome JBL flip that has NEVER let me down. For my lights, I may have to go with an oldie, but a Goldie "The Clapper". At THIS point in time I 100% would NOT recommend this item. However, once I order a different one I may have a change of 💙 Update: 11/2/22 I reorderd the same echo show and recieved it. I know, I know what was I thinking!! The first one I had received was obviously a 🍋after receiving the 2nd device I ordered. It literally took 2 minutes or less to set up and it has been working beautifully since we got it. NONE of the issues that the initial one had. I'm glad I went with the same model and trusted my gut that the previous one was just a faulty device. It picks up ALL of my smart devices throughout my home and the sound quality is pretty great! Not quite JBL or Bose Bluetooth speaker quality, but WAY better than I had anticipated. I am super happy with my purchase and my kids are fighting over who gets to choose the next song. I told them cleaning the house/ their room is ALWAYS better with loud music. So far....its working to get them to clean their rooms without complaining about it! 🤣 ... show more

  • From sceptical to IMPRESSED
Color: Charcoal Configuration: Device Only
At first I was a bit apprehensive based on feedback from others and watching several YouTube videos about blah blah blah. So i took the plunge and bought one of these just to test it out and see how it performs as I wanted my own experience to be the judge, and boy oh boy, i am officially impressed. SOUND The sound is clean and you would not believe the high volume that is coming out of this device. I have mine set to about a little over quarter and it is just good for everything on a daily basis. SCREEN I think the 8 inch screen hits the sweet spot, not too big, not too small. Its clear, the touch response is good so far with no complaints. ALEXA Damn, that woman can catch her name every time, all the time. She doesn't miss a beat and she probably misunderstood what we asked her to do but after the basics she is quite capable of executing skills. MY USAGE I have this device connected to my home security cameras (LOREX) and the integration is very good. I can ask Alexa to view different cameras and I'm not disappointed by how she handles requests. The "Drop In" feature is nice as sometimes I check in with my family when I'm not at home. YouTube is functional, in that you have to ask Alexa to open YouTube and then you manually input your choices, Netflix goes through a similar process, but all in all it works and its functional. NOTE I liked it so much that i bought another one for the Kitchen. NOTE 2 I found it so useful that i bought 2 for my in-laws to also view their security cameras and YouTube. CONS (1) I'm not a big fan of the split screen keyboard... probably there is a way to adjust it and I probably haven't figured it out as yet. (2) Sometimes the cameras open on screen like a picture in picture and i have to pinch to zoom. It does this sometimes and again its probably a setting i have to adjust. Overall i think this is a very good device based on your use-case and it works well for me. ... show more

  • Great product but can sometime be frustrating when speaking.
Color: Charcoal Configuration: Device Only
I love the Echo Shows and currently have a 5, 8 and 15 in my house. I plan to purchase an Echo Show 10 and will be on the lookout for similar products in the future. I love the integration with each other and with my other Amazon smart home products (such as the thermostat and ring products). However, my biggest complaints with the Echo Shows (and this is a problem in every version I have) is the voice recognition. My Echo Show 15 feels like I have to scream at it in order for it to pick my voice up. My Echo Show 8 will often mistake what I said, even though I have setup Voice ID and have spent a decent amount of time talking to it. This can be especially frustrating when asking it simple questions or trying to accomplish simple tasks like adding an item to a shopping list. Since I usually have my phone on me it makes me feel like I should have just asked Siri to add it, as the overall time it took to complete would have been faster. If Amazon can improve this aspect of the devices, I will be MUCH happier with the entire Echo Show line. The other issue I have is with the camera features. Drop Ins seem to work almost every time, without any issues at all. Live View however, works about 50% of the time on the Echo Show 15 and 8. I could only get it to work once on my Echo Show 5 and had to send it back for a replacement (haven't tested it again since I received my new one). I see others mentioning this issue online and the recommended solution is always the same, try turning off the camera features and turning them back on. I have repeatedly tried this and have tried using the Live View from multiple devices, and the success rate is very low. It's to the point now that even if I don't want to make a call to another Echo device, I will still just use the Drop In feature because I know Live View won't work, or will take multiple attempts before it actually connects. Overall though, I feel like these issues are mostly software related and could be fixed with future updates. The product is awesome, particularly if you bought in to the Amazon ecosystem and can make use of the easy integration of all the different Amazon devices. ... show more

  • What took me so long?!
Color: Charcoal Configuration: Device Only
Why did I wait so long? Now I wish I'd bought 2 or 3 (it was a super good buy at about $70 that day), but I'm really happy I finally jumped and got one. If they lower the price again, I will get another one at least! Amazon generally set it up with my other Amazon account/Alexa enabled devices. Screen is great size and clear with good pixels. Speaker is good enough quality to listen to music/radio and I can play it through other wireless speakers or Dots in the house (I use play Everywhere feature). I linked up to my Ring doorbell and my Ring camera easily and easily integrated with the house finding smart switches etc without any effort. Notices come through, and I can ask Alexa to see the door or other camera, sending it on screen and enabling the microphone if I need it. I'm installing an Alexa enabled smart front door lock today (wish me luck) so that'll hopefully go smoothly. The photo feature was nice to have for my fav photos running and it was fairly easy to set it up (I had to go find info on line in order to remove some photos that I didn't want in the slide show). I love that I can always see time/temp in a large format. So far, recognizes everything I say perfectly. Some great widgets (just figured that out) available. Plenty of videos on-line to show you tips and tricks for these which helps get things added and find fun features. Really, it has some great applications like announcements to all other Dots in other rooms, etc., and makes for a great safety feature if something happens. You can have it call a specific telephone number simply by saying Alexa, call 555-555-5555 (for instance), without needing a mobile phone. You can integrate your contacts to call also, including the Police or Emergency services. Great for kids and elderly. This is a feature I need to play with setting up still. With the cameras on these, you can also drop in on kids, other rooms, check on pets or elderly parents if they also have one of these in their room. Now I need to get friends and family on board so we can use it for video calls. Will be considering a Show 10 later also, since this is working so great. ... show more

  • Love and use all the features available
Color: Glacier White Configuration: Device Only
Was gifted one for christmas and LOVED it. Life changer and even my kids talk to alexa. I have now gifted them as house warming gifts. The display window is huge, the sound is very sound and great quality, the option for personal photos to appear warms my heart and access to information quickly is amazing. Setting timers for when I cook is easier. Asking about the weather or how long a drive to a certain location will be is very useful. The device can show me the doorbell camera, and turn on/off the lights in certain locations for me. I made sure the bulbs and doorbell were alexa compatible. I am able to watch some shows on the alexa while washing dishes and cooking. This device is very well rounded! Spotify is accessible on it and can be controlled using the Spotify app. ... show more

  • I loved the 5 so much I upgraded to the 8
Color: Charcoal Configuration: Device Only
This was my fourth Echo device purchase. I have two Echo Show 5's, a 2nd generation dot, 4th generation dot and now this. We originally purchased an Echo Show 5 for our kitchen and I loved it so much, I decided to upgrade to the Show 8 and move the 5 to the living room. Luckily, the app makes it easy to change rooms for your devices because a lot of echo shuffling went on after that. We now have one in the kitchen, living room, basement, bedroom and bathroom. While I'm getting my lunch ready for work in the morning, I have Alexa show me the latest local news. Sometimes, I'll play some music, stream a show or watch a game while cooking. The resolution is pretty good for a small device and the sound is great. It's not stereo quality of course but it's not bad either. It was super easy to set up. I'm talking suuuuuper easy. Other than plugging it in, I didn't have to do anything. I didn't even have to add my wifi password because I was able to set everything up before the device even arrived thanks to a setup email. I didn't buy a stand for it but it fits just fine where I set it. It's not wobbly or unstable. I don't use my echos for phone calls so I can't say how well that works. I also haven't used the camera on this one, nor do I really have any immediate plans to, so I can't attest to that either. I honestly use these mostly to control lights throughout the house as well as the TVs, create shopping lists, set reminders and timers, view the cameras we have set up outside, check to see who is at the doorbell, ask about the weather and use for entertainment purposes. Speaking of entertainment, I have had issues with it opening Netflix. This isn't isolated to this device though. It's something I've had issues with on all my echo shows. You can ask her to, and she'll say she did, but nothing happens. I need to play around with it but haven't had time yet. Obviously not a priority. Other than that, she opens Amazon Prime just fine (of course) as well as Tubi. What's really nice is that I was also able to open my YouTube TV via the internet and scroll through the live guide with no issues. I have Amazon Photos and have made albums specifically for the show. I just did one that is all Christmas backgrounds and it looks so festive! I love it! I've also used their nature one and really like it. The photos are beautiful, although you do get news bits and Alexa tips inbetween. That doesn't bother me. Some of the tips are interesting and the news bits are informative. All in all, I think it's plainly obvious that I love the Alexa devices, having 5 throughout my house now. I'm not even sure I will stop there as I have considered getting one for our shop/garage as well as my workout shed. Time will tell there, but if you like the dots, upgrading to the shows are totally worth it and I'd definitely recommend. ... show more
