I can't state strongly enough how much I love my new mattress. I've only been sleeping on it for 7 nights, but I feel like a new person, honestly. Back in November, I made the mistake of buying a memory foam mattress, and I had no idea how body heat gets trapped in that foam. I roasted every night, so much I left my window wide open in the dead of winter. It was tolerable during the winter months, but as soon as spring arrived, I discovered I could not get a full night sleep because of the unbearable heat trapping properties of the foam. That led me to a deep dive on an organic mattress made from wool, latex and cotton. After WEEKS of researching, I finally decided on the CottonSleep. I even talked to one of the owners on the phone, he was so helpful and courteous. As soon as we hung, I placed my order. No exaggeration, this mattress was one of the best purchases of my life. I keep so cool during the night, I'm clocking a solid 8 hours of deep sleep, primarily because of the cooling properties, but also the mattress comfort is 5-Star, top notch. This bed is very comfortable and firm, and worth the price. It's very heavy, so if you're a woman, don't necessarily count of getting it up to a second floor bedroom without help! Btw, it's rolled into a scary small size -- at first we feared we had received a twin instead of a queen-- but once opened it was immediately firm and wonderful to sleep on. Good mattress once it’s on a completely solid surface, but that’s really the key point—you have to have a completely solid base. It has no structure at all, so a standard slatted frame won’t cut it, even with added reinforcement. I added extra 2x4 slats to my king bed with only 4” gaps in between, and the mattress still visibly sags between them and can be felt at night. Even with those modifications, it really doesn’t perform properly unless you use something like a bunkie board or solid plywood platform. At this point, I’m into the mattress itself plus extra lumber, and still planning to buy a bunkie board just to make it work long-term. On the positive side, it is organic, non-toxic, and completely odorless, which was a big selling point for me and important to my wife. One thing worth noting is how difficult it is to move. Because it has no internal structure or rigidity, it doesn’t hold its shape at all—it’s awkward to handle and you can’t even really lean it against a wall without it collapsing or folding in on itself. Comfort is good once it’s properly supported, but it definitely requires more setup and consideration than a typical mattress. ... show more

    • Comfortable but weird and persistent smell

We have previously purchased Avocado mattresses but decided to give this brand a try. We bought a full size for our Son (10) and he loves the feel of it better than his Avocado brand. It is very soft and comfortable! The only con we have had so far is that ever since putting this mattress in his room there is a distinct and strong wood or barnyard type smell. I am not sure if it is the wool or cotton in the mattress, or something else inside, but we have not been able to get it to go away. After almost 2 months I still have to make sure to air out his room everyday or the smell grows very strong and overpowers the space. It does not smell like chemicals, which is good, but almost like a barn animal smell. Not offensive per se, but strong, and not how we want his room to smell. UPDATE: I reached out to the seller and they promptly got back to me. Below is there response which I appreciate. We are going to try the methods they suggested and I will update my review. FROM SELLER: Hi, Thank you so much for reaching out and for being so thorough in describing what you are experiencing. We are glad your son is enjoying the mattress overall and we want to help resolve this smell concern completely. You have done excellent research and you are correct. Natural wool contains lanolin, which is the wool's natural oil, and it can produce an earthy or barnyard-like scent. This is actually a sign of genuinely natural, unprocessed wool rather than synthetic alternatives, it is definitely not a sign of a defect. However we completely understand that an intensifying smell two months in is not acceptable and goes beyond what a normal break-in period should involve, especially with the warm summer months amplifying it. Here are some steps that have proven effective in neutralizing lanolin odor in natural wool mattresses: Baking soda is your best friend here. Sprinkle a generous amount of baking soda over the entire mattress surface, let it sit for several hours or ideally overnight, then vacuum it thoroughly. Baking soda neutralizes odors rather than masking them and is completely safe for natural materials. Direct sunlight and fresh air is the most effective natural remedy. If possible, move the mattress to an outdoor area with direct sunlight and airflow for several hours on a dry day. UV rays and fresh air together work significantly better than indoor ventilation alone. A wool specific spray such as diluted white vinegar in a light mist can help neutralize lanolin odor. Allow it to dry completely before putting bedding back on. If after trying these steps the smell remains unusually strong we would like to know as that may indicate an issue specific to your unit that we would want to address.
