  • I want to love this mic but it has issues. Probably needs a firmware update that does not exist.
UPDATED 5-1-2020 Well, you can see my up and downs about this Mic. Ordered a Blue Yeti last night. That should tell you where I’m at with it. More notes and, now, comparisons to follow. I also have a AKG2020+USB, which does sound great but I wanted a gain control pretty badly, and that AKG does not have that, and it also has no good way to sit on a desk that I have found, without a tripod stand taking up too much space. Inherently unbalanced in weight given how the stand adapter is designed. But it’s very nice gear. Have just gotten too disappointed with this Lyra now. UPDATED 5-31-2020 Great sound but the misses are adding up for me. Design is excellent by which I mean it’s physical presence, weight, appearance. It’s a cool looking mic on your desk. Mute button remains unusable because you have to press it just right, and often over and over again. Not usable if actually recording or doing a webinar. Biggest miss is if I adjust the volume level in monitor mode while using, I start to get a little more noise on monitoring. No idea why. It makes that function hard to use when you want very much to be able to do that. I am using it with a Mac Mini on the latest version of IOS as of this date. Support knows that you need to pick either the computer audio controls or the mics in a session. But I now find that the front audio control is pretty much also unusable like the mute button. Still like the gain, though it is a miss too for not having any markings to see where it’s set (you have to look at the software, which makes sense for ultimately checking but it would be nice if you know you like it at, say, a specific mark for a specific application if you could possibly know there that is. I ended up making markings on it with a Sharpee. Does not help the aethetics but that’s on the back. Still LOVE the acoustic qualities. But adjusting anything while live is just not good. On the focused stereo setting the rejection of sounds from other directions seems exceptional. I present online often and sometimes stream video as part of that, and Mac Mini fan starts up and runs. It’s not super loud (the fan) but a less focused condenser mic would pic that sound right up. This does not when pointed toward me (not toward the mini) and on the focused stereo setting. That’s a very strong feature. In pamphlet that comes with it, it says to first go download the latest firmware. There is NOT firmware update available and support has confirmed this. And, there needs to be. I want to love this mic but I am now looking for something else. So, a couple months in now, I’m moving this rating back down. if they put out a firmware update that fixed these things, it would get 5 stars from me even with the useless mute button. This could easily be the best microphone available for streaming, gaming, podcasting, under $200 but these misses had me looking at a Blue Yeti tonight. I doubt that could sound as good as this but I imagine all the features might work better. UPDATED 3-27-2020: This is a great design with fabulous features all of which are easily accessible. The sound is fantastic. I mean, it's exceptional and the choices in pattern of pick up are better than anything I've seen. The weight and heft are very nice in this day and age of plastic body mics. This is substantial. And it is quite retro. It's cool. One of the things that fairly makes it great is the presence of an actual, working, smooth gain control, right on the mic. It works really well. I have a few concerns though. I thought one of them was more serious that it maybe is. The other is just a fail in the design but relatively more minor as an issue. 1. The volume control on the front has a type of interface issue with the volume control on the device you plug this into. I now know the key to this, and it seems to hold up: Only use one mode of managing the volume back to you through the headphone jack on the mic. Don't start with using the knob on the mic and then sometimes use the system volume, too. Or, don't start with system volume control and then reach for the knob. Pick a lane. Pick one or the other during a sessions, because it does weird things switching between one or the other. Their tech support confirmed this to me. This checks out on my Mac and it works best for me to just do this in this order: - Plug in the mic - First thing, go to settings/sound, and select the AKG mic for input (It will already have selected itself, I believe) and then go to output and select AKG for output. It will NOT have automatically moved to that by you just plugging in the mic. Now, if you are using external monitoring like through headphones or ear buds, only use the knob on the front of the mic to dial in your volume. - Second, dial in your input level as desired. Many programs like Zoom will auto control this but you may first have wanted to set it where you want it in the sound settings on your device (mac or PC). So, go there, and play with that gain button on the back until it's where you want it in that range. I will try later some more with this on iPad Pro and see it I get that working well enough. iPad pros have some funky issues in such things. I do KNOW that it works but the control issues are greater. 2. The mute button is just a fail. It's functionally worthless. You have to press just right for it to work, and it makes a bit of a "thunk" and, at least on mine, sometimes it works and sometimes it does not. So, it's just not useful for quick muting and unmuting. It will make noise every time you press it and it will also not reliably work and you'll have to press again. Maybe mine is defective but I think it's a poorly designed button/switch. It will work however to press when you want to make sure that the mic is off. Otherwise, you will want to mute by software and not hardware if using this for something like recording or being on a webinar. The sound is what matters most, and this is terrific for that. And, the volume control is better than I thought. It truly does not work as well as the volume control on my Shure MV5 but it's quite good if you do what they suggested to me and set it up how I suggested above. It is easier to access and actuate than the one on the Shure. Minor note: The pamphlet that comes with it says to first do a firmware update. It gives you a website to go to. There is no firmware update. I checked with tech support. There is no firmware update to find. I have moved my rating up to a 4. It may yet get to a 5, but it won't be because of the mute button. It will be the sound, the robustness of the design (the heft is very nice), and the ability to select those four settings for sound pick up patter. Very nice. ... show more

  • Not as Portable as you'd think
I've used this mic since day one with fantastic results. The only issue I've had so far is finding a suitable carrying case. Since I tend to work from several different places and this is a big mic, I am yet to find a suitable carrying case that will protect the product but at the same time make it easy to move. AKG does not manufacture such accessory for this mic and other generic case do not adapt to this particular shape either. ... show more

  • Comically large - good for meetings
The size of this mic with its stand makes it look like a bit of a caricature. Purchased because I am a bit of a music gear junky and am quite curious about such things - particularly when they go on sale. I had a more traditional TRS microphone as a go-to for recording vocals for music, but this does quite well for meetings. The onboard mute button is really nice. Studio headphones can be plugged right into the mic. This setup will give you much better sound quality than the most popular bluetooth headsets. ... show more

  • Good starter mic, looks impressive on your desk, easy phone/tablet/computer connectivity
The AKG Lyra provides a good platform to get into recording. The feature combination I value most in its price-range and compatibility is that it has adjustable gain _and_ USB compatibility. I can record from my Android phone and my iPad anywhere, turning down the gain to deaden background noise. I’ve not noticed any hum or distortion that plague many USB mics. The stand is stable and there’s a socket so you can mount the mic to a mic boom. The USB interface can be a little clumsy in that the mic usually hijacks sound output, so you’ll want to use corded/stereo-mini headphones for playback, setup, and monitoring. The USB and headphone jacks are placed between the mic and its stand swivel restricting flexibility of the mount. The mic seems bulky to travel with, so I wish I could find a case to keep it travel-scar free. ... show more

  • Just what I was looking for!
I am so pleased with this microphone. For starters, when I decided to buy a USB microphone for playing virtual D&D during the pandemic, I wanted it to be one that I could use to do some non-professional music recording with as well, since I play a handful of instruments and I sing. I don’t have my old setup with condenser mics, XLR cables, mixer with phantom power, etc., but I knew I wanted something that was going to provide good quality for it being USB and that would work well with my MacBook, as well as any other device I might want to use it with. Having worked at Guitar Center for many years and being musician who previously helped run a studio, I was really partial to Blue microphones and Shure microphones and thought for sure that I’d be going with one of the Blue Yeti microphones. I already own a Blue Snowball but wanted something more versatile and higher quality. After looking at the Blue Yeti mics, I realized that they don’t play all that well with Apple products, which is a major issue for me. I noticed this AKG mic on the search results and decided to do a little research on it. Turns out, it was exactly what I was looking for! I knew AKG was a high quality brand like Blue and Shure, so I felt confident that I wasn’t being duped. You may think it’s snobby, but if I don’t see a brand sold at Guitar Center or find it on the Sweetwater page, I generally will shy away from it. There are a lot of low quality makers of music supplies that love to take advantage of people who don’t know any better. Beware. Anyway, I ultimately decided on buying this particular microphone out of all the ones I saw in my price range. It arrived a few days later and I was ecstatic. The sound quality is amazing. If you’re a beginner and you don’t know much about microphones but you want a good quality for recording interviews, podcasts, or making some solo artist music that sounds great without throwing thousands into a recording studio, this is a great little setup. I could see an acoustic guitar playing singer/songwriter making a nice demo with this. You don’t need to know the microphone pattern names like cardioid, bi-directional, omni, hypercardioid, etc. This mic uses simple names and they are easy to switch through. I obviously recommend this mic and am happy with my purchase. 😉 ... show more
