UPDATE Nov 2021: Everything I griped about below seems to have been worked out and the system works "almost" flawlessly. I use it on my AppleT TVs, iPad, Rokus, etc. and no longer even think about it, which is the point you want to get to when cutting the cord. This is not a negative, but I think it's funny that with their revised interface they have separated the local channels listing from the premium ones. Before we had the option of filtering them if desired, but now it's like they're reminding you that local channels are separate. They've come a long way over the past year. UPDATE Dec 2020: They have fixed many of the issues with the software mentioned below. I think the platform is getting closer to what I had expected with a couple of little annoying glitches: - every now and then the device requires a reboot to clear the buffering. Same as my router anyway. - two internal cables meant you could watch from at most 2 separate TVs as long as there was no scheduled recording happening. But now that they are using the HDD for live buffering, that ties up both lines for just 1 TV since it's always "somewhat" recording. This means that we can only watch local TV from a single TV at the same time. Rather annoying. Overall, I think the experience is getting better and the bugs are getting squashed, so this is definitely a great option for cutting the cord. ORIGINAL REVIEW: Like everyone else I looked to using AirTV to cut the cord. This COULD have been a great product but they fall way short of delivering from my expectations. I will rate this on two parts. Hardware and software: HARDWARE: The good news is that it works. You plug in your antenna and you can stream local stations on any device or TV around the house. That was the hardest part and they got it right. Then they royally botched up the easy part SOFTWARE: 1. Unless you drop everything to sit in front of the TV all day you probably rely on DVR to catch up on shows around your busy schedule. Well you can't schedule upcoming shows for recording because that doesn't work. No error message, no way to view or manage upcoming scheduled recordings. My android said they're already scheduled, but nothing records. It worked the first week, then none of that works anymore and some of the menus "went away". Tons of people have posted on their blogs that they have contacted support reps and they are aware of it. "They are working on it". REALLY?? Poor!!! 2. It works differently on Android than Roku. You can't save preferences on the roku. AirTV does not work on AppleTV. Not sure of other iOS devices. They are aware of it. I've been researching ways to get around cutting the cord and getting local channels with DVR for a while now. I may get passed the return deadline before I make a decision, and I hope they get their acts together and makes this what it could EASILY be. Otherwise, this could end up in the classifieds.

Not what I was hoping for!

I have been a long time user of HD Homerun and Channels Whole House DVR - I have a lot of experience using an over the air antenna hooked up to my WiFi to broadcast TV signals to every Roku and AppleTV in my house. Over the years I’ve gotten tired of switching between apps for premium content, then to Channels app to watch network shows. In an attempt to combine everything into one app, I signed up for Sling Blue because I read that the AirTV would put my locals from my OTA into the Sling guide, and allow me to record OTA series into the same app. Sounded great - just what I was looking for! Unfortunately, reality did not meet expectations! In order to get the AirTV 2 to record, you need to attach an external hard drive to it. Depending on which external drive you select, you’re talking anywhere from $30 - $100 dollars on top of the price of the AirTV 2. Not too bad, but needs to be considered. I connected the AirTV to my OTA, my WiFi (an Eero 6E router) and the hard drive. You can only set it up with Sling via a mobile device connected to WiFi. Setup was glitchy through out. The AirTV would lose the connection to my iPad during the setup, randomly shut down several times, but finally connected and scanned for local channels after about 30 minutes of frustration. Once connected the good parts were few - the channel logos on the guide looked nice! That’s it! That’s when the real frustration started! The frustrations - Some shows being recorded from the OTA lacked icons. Some shows could not be setup for a “Series” record - they would have to be done manually every time they aired. And I’m not talking about some local produced weekly show, I’m talking about NATIONAL shows - SNL, This Week, Celebrity Jeopardy, etc. Any show that would allow a “series” recording would only do so with the “Record new and reruns” option. It would error out whenever I tried to set it to “Only record new episodes”. The resolution for the live shows was HORRIBLE! Blocky, smearing - just miserable. Made my 4K OLED look like it was playing 1970’s low def rabbit ear antenna broadcasts. Just to confirm, I dropped out of Sling and checked the same shows on Channels - looked like they were in 4K off of Channels. Live shows were buffering so much, it was nearly impossible to watch. It was literally buffering every 2 to 3 minutes for LONG times. Again, checked Channels - no buffering. I figured a recorded show would not have issues with buffering - I WAS WRONG! The recordings looked just as bad, and were buffering just as much. I next thought maybe it was the WiFi connection limitations - connected the AirTV to the nearest Eero station via Cat5e cable - still horrible resolution and buffering like wild. Checked online for solutions to fix either issue - the only thing I found was to unplug the AirTV for 10 seconds, plug it back in, hard reset the app, wait 5 minutes, start the app again. Did that - no improvements. I contacted the Tech Support line for the maker of the AirTVs - their solutions for everything was to tell me my antenna, WiFi or Internet providers were probably to blame. When I explained that I had experience with, and still using an HD Homerun w/ Channels, and there were none of the issues with the Antenna, WiFi, Internet providers on that device like I was having with the AirTV - they basically told me they couldn’t believe it. In the end, Tech Support could not provide a solution to fix the issues. So everything got removed, and returned to Amazon. Sling subscription cancelled! Back to the drawing board!

Excellent product if you need it.

I was a bit skeptical about this product, but after having it running for a about 3 days I'm a believer! The setup of the system isn't hard per se, but just somewhat undocumented. Basically you attach an antenna (I won't go into the antenna buy obviously it's critical to have good signals to get the best results with this product), hook up your network cable and power it on. Or, you can connect to your network wirelessly as well, could be really handy if the best spot for your antenna isn't near a switch or router. After you do the hookup, use the Sling TV app on your smart device and go into setup and you'll see options for a me setup, including scanning for channels. It's nice to see signal levels after the scan is done to determine the best spot, note that they're not live levels, you'll have to scan again after you adjust your antenna to get a new reading. Now that you're setup, you just use the features of the Sling TV app to view channels in a grid format or create your own channel lists etc. Navigate to he channel you want and there you go! A nice feature of the AirTV is the ability to hook up a hard drive or flash drive to it and have a full dual tuner DVR! I hooked up an inexpensive 1TB hard drive and after AirTV formats the drive I had 140 hours of DVR. There are essentially four 'modes' of operation. Watch two different TV channels on two different devices, watch on channel and record one channel, record two channels and watch none and finally you can have one remote viewer outside the network and then either watch or record one channel locally with an active rwmoye viewer. If I were to give a critical review of something it would be the Sling TV app itself. It seems to run differently on different platforms. IE on my Roku TV you have to keep filtering the grid view to show only off air channels but the Android app retains the view preference between launches. Also, the Roku TV app occasionally stops streaming video the results in having to reset the TV from the menu, but I think this is in specific instances. Seems to happen if you had the app open on the TV and then initiated setup on the Android app. Overall though, with the Sling TV app qhirks, it's a great system. Works well for me to watch TV in my apartment on a couple TVs having the antenna in the best position possible. Recommend 100%!

Simple and straightforward once configured

I've had this for less than one day and will update if things change. I bought an open box unit so had to perform a factory reset as part of the initialization. I connected it first to a network cable and then later wirelessly and saw no difference in picture quality or performance. As others have noted the picture sometimes is not as high resolution as when the antenna is connected to the TV, but is still good. There was no loss of channels compared to when the antenna was connected directly to the TV. The installation process is not a simple "Plug and Play", but following the prompts on my Samsung tablet it made it relatively simple. I had a spare external external drive that I hooked up and was able it immediately record shows. I already have a Sling subscription and the AirTV2 integrated easily. We have multiple TV's, with ROKU, Chromecast with Goggle TV or using the Smart TV's Sling app and each one receives good signal. So why four instead of five stars: Only one viewer at a time for Live OTA viewing, but The DVR controls are basic, but still very functional, but they are not as robust as our DISH DVR was. For the cost savings, I'm more than happy with it If this product lasts for a few years, it's hard to imagine a better solution in this price range.

A cheap box provides a less than ideal DVR experience

AirTV 2 is a cheap box that provides an OK enough experience, but ultimately I returned it. Living in a large city, I am able to get all the major broadcast channels with a simple indoor antenna. The AirTV 2 was able to pick up the exact same channels as my TVs and stream them through the ethernet to my 3 Roku TVs via the Sling app. The Sling app allows you to watch the live channels, regardless of whether you have a subscription. However, all of my TVs have antennas anyway. What I wanted was a DVR, and that's where AirTV 2 falls short. I had a 1TB hard drive hooked up, so I had potentially hundreds of hours of recording time. To take advantage, I set it to record the "NBC Nightly News" as a series, which it (usually) did. After a period of 2 weeks, I had about 14 episodes saved, and I wanted to watch the latest. I chose the newscast, but from the DVR interface, there is no easy way to tell the date the episode was recorded. Worse, when I was searching each episode for the latest by playing them, the app stopped playing any DVR videos altogether. The non-responsive DVR issue happened multiple times during the 45 days I had this product. One time, I went to watch some programs that had been setup, only to find that the AirTV 2 had completely crashed and had to be hard booted. It had therefore had missed the recordings. There was no indication from the Sling app that this had happened. The iOS app for Sling worked pretty well, even outside the house. I thought I could work around the buggy Roku software to watch TV through an HDMI cable or AirPlay to an Apple TV. When I hooked up the HDMI cable to the phone using the Apple adapter, the phone did not send the image to the TV. It only sent the Sling interface. Using AirPlay to the Apple TV had the same problem. The experience may be better on an Amazon Fire device, but I do not have one for testing. The Roku TV was less than six months old, though, so I was not using old hardware. The Sling app itself worked OK on Roku, it was the AirTV 2 DVR that didn't work well. I wasn't expecting great things from the AirTV 2, but the fact that it didn't perform its basic DVR functions was an issue. The lack of AppleTV support and the buggy Roku app were the final things that caused me to send it back, which is too bad, because it did make a good compliment to the Sling service.

It seems this has a bad tuner. I do know the software can be buggy on the installs for sling as I have one. This was for a friend for a Christmas present that went bad. When this unit got to the point of looking for the tuner to scan for channels it just never went anywhere from that point. He even let it run all night to try to connect after trying both wireline/wireless connections and rebooting phone multiple times and even using another different phone. I am reading there are a bunch of these failing so maybe there were a bad batch of them produced. My AirTv2 that I have had for a couple of years now is working great still without issue. I did buy this used, so it was most likely a new customer return and it wasn't properly checked to see if it was a good unit before it was sent to me. These units are great if you get a good one. I do recommend them still but if you purchase get a new one, or get the Anywhere which has 4 tuners instead of 2 and 2TB of DVR storage. *** UPDATE! *** I had my friend send this back as I thought it was defective, but I have learned that it most likely was NOT defective. He uses apple phone and I learned that there is issues with Apple's operating system causing the problem. I recently bought an AirTv Anywhere for myself just before getting him this one and I didn't have a bit of trouble installing it, but I use Android operating system. I raised this to a 5 star review as This isn't fair to the AirTv folks that make these units and the software issues are all caused by Apple. My advice to everyone is that if you are indeed an Apple user and you do not have access to an android phone or tablet then do NOT buy this or the Anywhere unit until you do right now. Until somebody gets in gear and fixes this problem you MUST have an android device (phone or tablet with Sling app and created account) in order to get it installed. It will get to the ready to scan point, then hang up and stay completely stuck with Apple's operating system. I wish to alert everyone of this problem and clarify that there isn't a bunch of bad devices out there, but rather an Apple software problem. Once you get it installed with an android device it will function fine on the Sling app on Apple phones from what I understand. Please don't beat up on the sellers over this.

There are much better internet-based TV tuners

This was a very hyped TV tuner that I saw numerous positive reviews on, but in practice, it has been very disappointing. First of all, you will find the DVR function is almost completely unworkable. I have not been able to get it to work. It has numerous issues with "compatible" external drives. I ended up buying one on AirTVs list and the DVR function still does not work. The account page sees the drive now (sometimes) but when you try and record something, it throws you an error. The device as a TV tuner is decent. It starts up pretty slow (takes a few seconds to start up, once a channel is selected). The Guide is hideous though. It integrates a bunch of (generally worthless) free channels with your regular TV tuner guide and when you try and unselect these free channels, the navigation in the guide is very cumbersome. You have to realize that if you intend to use this device, you will only be able to use it within the Sling app. It is not a generally recognized device on your network. Luckily, many devices support the Sling app, but if you think you will access it from Windows as a network device, you will be mistaken. One benefit of this device is the broadcasting feature. Basically, if you have a profile setup with Sling, you can access the tuner content when you are not at home. You need to be aware though, that you can eat up your internet cap usage (many ISPs place caps on how much data usage, you can use in a month). ISPs will then charge you surcharges for every block of data you use in a month. Also, many ISPs are more restrictive on data uploads (since this device will be uploading its data onto the internet) than they are on downloads. Overall, I have found Silicon Dust devices to be much better, with greater flexibility and consistently solid performance. The homerun software used with Silicon dust has its own deficiencies, but at least Silicon Dust has much more interoperability with other software packages than AirTV (Sling).

Started off ok but developed problems.

::edit to update review:: After having this thing for over a month it turns out this product is not that great at all. As of last week I intermittently lose the local channels. They show up in the guide but instead of programming info it just shows "Click here to view programming options" or something like that and when I select the channel I just get a blank screen and the Sling app freezes. I rescanned the channels, did a factory reset, all several times and nothing worked. I contacted their support via chat and the support person said they couldn't help me and I'd have to call in but he also said he had talked to several people reporting the exact same problem. I had to go to work but when I got home it was working again. Today the exact same thing happened again. This time I called and the person I talked to played dumb and said she had never heard of this issue and suggested I do a factory reset and if that didn't fix it I should just send the thing back. Well, I'm past the return window so I'm stuck with this malfunctioning piece of junk. BTW, when I got home it was working again. Go figure.... Below is my original review for reference. ::original review:: Like many others I'm in the process of ditching my regular cable/internet company because I'm tired of paying $175/mo. Switched to Sling for TV and T-Mobile 5G for internet. The only challenge was getting locals. I already had an antenna which worked great but I was only getting locals on one TV and found it very inconvenient to have to change inputs when I wanted to switch between Sling and one of the local channels. I bought this hoping it would solve the problem. So far so good. I've added all my local channels to the Sling guide and now I have everything in one place on every TV. Initially I experienced buffering issues and messages that it had lost communication with the AirTV 2 but after a lot of troubleshooting I found that the placement of the actual antenna is what makes all the difference in the world. Once I found a good spot where I got a good signal from most of the stations, all the buffering and loss of connection issues went away. Bottom line, the placement of the antenna and the strength of the signal from the local channels makes all the difference in the world. If anyone is experiencing issues, try moving your antenna to a different location. Fortunately because the AirTV 2 connects to your network via Wifi, you can move it to wherever the antenna works best. This morning I canceled regular cable/internet and am now saving almost $80/month.
