The Airfree Onix 3000 Filterless Air Purifier uses unique Patented Thermodynamic TSS™ Technology to purify the air in a room space no larger than 650 ft². The technology used in the Airfree utilizes the similar concept of how boiling water destroys microorganisms. The Airfree uses air convection to drive 14,000 to 20,000 liters of air into the purifier every hour. It takes 24 hours to complete the air purification cycle in one room, so it is important to keep the Airfree in one space and not move it from room to room. The inside core is heated at temperatures close to 400 degrees F in order to successfully kill harmful microorganisms. Prior to returning to the environment, the purified air is cooled. This clean air then dissipates throughout the entire environment of the room. The outside of the Airfree gets warm, but is not too hot to harm anyone that touches it. We could smell mold when we entered our place. No longer noticing the smell. Seems to be doing the job. Like the idea of not having to replace a filter. Heat comes off the unit but hard to know what the impact will be.

I purchased this because my home contained visable mold and who knows what's hidden behind the drywall. In addition, the lower level of the home often had a funny smell (not really moldy, just funny, kind of earthy), and since I moved, the dog and cat are really itchy. I read one of the reviews for this product on another site where someone had a mold remediator come in 4 times and it didn't work, so I decided to try this first, since it's cheaper, and it is supposed to remove more than just mold. I plugged this in in the family room on the lower level. It originally gives off a mild burning smell that subsides after a few days. Soon, the lower level of my home had no more funny smells and both the cat and dog prefer to sleep in that room as opposed to all other rooms. I just ordered a second one for the mid level of my home and plan to get a smaller one for the bedroom. I'm very pleased with it. Don't know that it got rid of the mold, but it did get rid of the smell and both the dog and cat think it's doing a good thing, since they had no interest in that room prior to the Airfree. To me, that says a lot. Ok, had to edit this because I got the second airfree for the living room level and that's been running about 2 weeks now. They say it takes a month to work, but my itchy dog, who had rubbed all the hair off her eye and had large scabs on her rear by her tail (the vet was the one who originally put the air purifier idea in my head) has stopped rubbing her face, her eye's no longer red and it appears that the hair's even making an effort to regrow and all the scabs on her rear are gone! She's not on any meds for this either so that's not the cause of her improvement. This is more than I could have hoped for. She's much more comfortable and will now hang with us in the livingroom. I just ordered a small one for my bedroom. Now we'll see how it does on my morningtime stuffy nose :-) Ps. still no funny smells on the lower level!

The Airfree website has documentation and videos about the science and testing done on the airfree devices. As a layperson, the theory behind it is solid too. A ceramic chamber heats air to 400 degrees where basically anything organic will burn. Natural convection will pull air and any viruses/bacteria/fungus through the chamber, burning any said organisms. However, unlike a filtering air purifier, there's no filter media to visibly show dust or smoke collected or filtered. So, there's a lot of skeptics on this product. I gave one unit to my brother, who said after running the airfree in his basement bathroom that it's the first time he's not smelled mold in the bathroom (yes, I've told my brother that he shouldn't run it directly inside the bathroom). The skeptics and people who don't read through or understand the theory behind the product will think that the airfree collects viruses or bacteria or fungi spores inside the unit and that moving the unit to another unit will release those things back in the air or something. No, the airfree takes a long time to process the air in a room because it relies on convection and not a fan to pull air through the heating chamber. There is a lot of air in a room which is why it'll take a while to start reducing airborne contaminants. Because the airfree is only killing airborne spores if you move it out of the room then the mold that is still living in the wall producing said spores will just continue spreading those spores, they just won't be killed by the airfree. Just like with any air purifier, this is only a piece of the puzzle. Take care of any contaminants (mold, decay, messes, etc), keep your areas as clean as possible and the air purifier will help in maintaining the air quality. I recommend this product, especially for a moldy bathroom that you haven't remedied yet.
