I've used airbrush sets with a stand-alone compressor long ago for painting plastic model kits but since my kids love decorating their baked goods, I thought I'd give one of these rechargeable airbrush kits a try. The box contains all the basics you need to get started although I do wish there were two additional items, which I'll address later. Very first thing you should do is to clean it well. I completely dissembled the airbrush then soaked everything in a sealed plastic container with 80 proof vodka since I did not have any "banana oil" or any higher proof food grade alcohol. When I disassembled the airbrush, I also made the mistake of removing the operating lever, which isn't mentioned in the "cleaning method" of how to reinstall after removal; the other parts are self explanatory. With some trial and error I was able to reinstall the lever properly so it's working as designed again. One issue I had after soaking was cleaning out the body completely. I tapped the airbrush body firmly into a napkin in the my palm of my hand to expel as much of the vodka as possible and in turn shook out some metal fragments. This is when I wish the kit came with a small tube brush to help clean out the body. After I saw the metal fragments, I proceeded to poor more vodka through the openings while held over a bowl to see if any more fragments came out and there were a few smaller ones in the bottom of the bowl. I ran more vodka through the body a third time over the sink to flush out whatever else I could and then proceeded to dry it as much as possible with shaking and compressed air followed by overnight drying on a paper towel. I haven't tested it with food dye yet, but with blowing out remaining liquid, the mist seems fine and easy to control for adult hands but might be a little challenging for smaller hands due to the size of the compressor. That's when I wish it also included a hose for some flexibility to separate the airbrush from the compressor for better handling and control. In any case, we're planning out our next design and hope to be able to airbrush some macrons or add some color to cake frosting.
