  • Not bad for the price, a few issues
Assembled this thing over the span of a couple days. The online manual is "ok", the illustrations are sometimes a bit hard to get a bead on the correct angles but as long as you pay attention it's not too bad. The software download/installation was probably more time consuming than hard but seeing as you're working with installing software on basically 2 machines, it's tolerable. I did have 2 issues: As noted on another review, one of the capacitors fell off the driver hat as soon as I took it out of the bag. Cold solder joint. I re-soldered and everything worked fine once the robot was finished EXCEPT I can't for the life of me get an image out of the camera. According to the manual, as soon as the client program connects to the Pi you should see a video window open up. Never happened. I could otherwise control the robot, the camera servos, everything except get a video to display. I've sent an email to Adeept support so we'll see. I've got enough to play with as it is but the color recognition would be a nice addition. ;-) ... show more

  • Bad 1st kit. Great customer service. Once build WOW....
Quality control is not there. Started putting this kit together open the static bag for the motor hat and the capacitor falls off the board checked the other one and sure enough one side is not soldiered. Upsetting cause I’ve already invested hours in this kit. Ordered a replacement kit but doubtful it will be problem free. I’ll update once I get the new kit. ***Update I’ve reached out to Adeept and there customer service is amazing I have changed my rating to 4 star they are sending me a new robot hat. I’ve completed the build and must say this thing is awesome minus a few hiccups. There seems to be an issue with the WiFi loosing connection but on a wired LAN this thing really moves and does everything as described. I will mess with the code and see if I can work out the bugs on the WiFi. Make sure and tighten down the screws due to movement vibration if they are loose they will fall out. Instructions were ok but left a lot of room for head scratching. If you take your time you can figure it out. ... show more

  • Awesome Kit, the kids love it!
The media could not be loaded. TLDR: This is a great kit, very affordable, follow the online PDF as it did not come with instructions in the box. The programming part is straight forward to get it running. simply clone the repo and run setup script. Have fun! I got this RaspClaws kit for my kids as a Christmas present, and couldn’t be happier. It’s is a great start for anyone trying to get started playing with robotics. The price is fairly reasonable given the parts that it comes with, Picam, servos x15 +1 one extra, Accelerometer, LEDs, ect. Once assembled, it is fairly compact and even looks pretty cool. There were no instructions in the box, but instructions could be found on the link provided on the product page of amazon. The assembly process is straight forward simply follow the instructions and you’ll be setup in no time. Overall, it took me less than a day to put it all together. Everything is OpenSource, so you simply have to download the code from their Git repo, and run the setup.py. The setup script will take care of installing everything needed for the RaspClaws to work. Once everything was setup and installed, I was able to run the RaspClaws.py without any issues and connected successfully to the ‘spider’, and It crawls … it’s creepy Overall, this is a great learning/fun kit! I look forward to see how they play with it longterm. P.S: you may want a second sets of batteries, to limit your play downtime :-D ... show more

  • Firmware is a work in progress
The directions for loading the firmware and all of the drivers & libraries is not that good. I am a retired software engineer and I still have not figured out how to get OpenCV running on the Raspberry Pi. I have it running on my desktop, but cannot get it to run on the Pi. Also, the firmware will not run on the new RPi model A or the Model 4B. The reason is that these boards use a different version of the Broadcom CPU that is incompatible with some of the drivers. ... show more

  • Worth it even for parts
Looking for separate parts to build hexapod and came across this. This is not for the beginner and pdf manual lacks clear step by step guide. However, if you are planning to build a hexapod, this kits actually is a great value. Towerpro MG90S Servo costs around $5 to buy separately and there are 15 of them in this kit. And Raspberry Pi Camera is about $20. So those alone worth ~$95 and you get the rest for $5. Still trying to put together the robot and will update the review after the build. ... show more

  • This robot kit is Awesome!
I had to watch the video along with reading the assembly document due to 2D vs 3D. Set up your Ras Pi first, get your servos aligned. If you align while assembling make sure the camera is connected or it won't boot the software. I have built more than a dozen kits in the last year. This one has the most accurate instructions (almost dead on) and the software worked perfectly though i did have a little trouble getting the right CV file. Trial and error got me there. I would recommend this to youngsters who want to start using and programming a Raspberry Pi as it is very accurate and easy to follow. I used a RPI 4, it worked first time and every time. GREAT PRODUCT! ... show more

  • Fun but disappointing.
Many of the pieces broke during assembly because the nuts would not fit in the slots without modifications. Luckily CA glue fixed the pieces. It is also very difficult to swap out micro SD cards after being assembled. Batteries don't last very long so I would suggest batteries with much higher mAH.

  • Major Software Support Issues
It says raspberry pi 4 in the title but it will not work with rpi 4 unless you are willing to spend hours debugging code that uses deprecated libraries and changing your rpi 4 configurations. Adeept currently has no guide for how to do this so I would not recommend purchasing this unless you are confident in your understanding of Python and your troubleshooting skills. Even if you have an older version rpi or rpi os you will likely still have much troubleshooting to do. If you manage to figure all that out, you will be confronted by the fact that the batteries provided do not supply enough power to run an rpi 4. This is probably fine if you have an rpi 3 but the listing is very misleading. ... show more
