This LectroFan provides truly natural sounding white noise in a small, convenient package. You can choose a "white noise" option or a "fan sound" option and adjust them to be lower or higher in pitch. The LectroFan uses dynamic algorithms to create constant real white noise or fan sound, so there are no recording loops with hiccups or repeats or anything like that. It is really easy to sleep with this thing. For the lower toned options the LectroFan is not as loud as I would have expected, although it is pretty small and would be more than sufficient for most people's needs. If you are looking for a white noise machine, just get this one it is a wonderful product. There is no comparison to other white noise machines we have had or heard, the LectroFan is simply better. Two adults and a toddler sleep very easily with this in the room, the noise itself is more peaceful and effective for us than a large fan that we were using before. The one caveat I would say is that the LectroFan may not be loud enough for those who are trying to drown out very loud noises. If someone is using a chainsaw in your yard, for example, or if you have two large barking pitbulls outside your bedroom window (been there!), the top volume on the LectroFan may not be enough to drown it out, especially on the lower toned settings. But if you need to drown out that level of noise you are probably going to need a larger and more powerful machine, something more like a powerful stereo system (which was what we used to drown out the pitbulls, lol).

Very nice unit. Low (3 W) power consumption. It offers 10 colors of noise ranging in small steps from Brown (very little high frequency sound energy) to white (equal energy across the audio spectrum), 10 volume levels, and 10 simulated fan modulation styles (no moving parts). The unit works for me to mask outside noise without imposing itself on me. It works for my wife who says its sound acts as a meditation focus that lets her mind relax and fall asleep. White noise can be very harsh to many people, because there are not many persistent high-frequency noisy sources in nature or civilization, and most of those are grating rather than relaxing. Other colors of sound with less high-frequency content, can be more soothing for people. With this unit you can find the sound color that works best for you - soothing yet able to cover up life's annoying sounds. Ten volume levels is also nice. I found that I set the volume too high at first. Outside noises were covered up, but the unit's own sound was an annoyance. About 5 minutes of adjusting the volume down and laying my head back down, a volume step at a time, it gave me just the level I needed. The sound is lightly modulated as if it is being generated by a fan. There are 10 simulated fan options from the barely noticeable modulation of a ceiling fan to more industrial-style fan simulations. I found that as with the volume, I needed to adjust the choice of fan style. Similar styles are next to one another, so it's pretty easy to home in on the one that best suits you. This wide variety is a very nice feature. You might think that with 10x10x10 = 1000 options, you'll spend hours finding something suitable, but 5 minutes before lights-out and a maybe 5 more minutes making fine adjustments is about all you'll need (with, perhaps, one middle-of-the-first-night final re-adjustment). You'll be close to what works for you before you even turn out the lights, and then the small adjustments will get you to what's best for you. The unit remembers the chosen sound color, volume, and fan modulation so on future nights you can simply turn it on and not have to fuss. The unit can be turned on to run until it's turned off, or it can be set to turn itself off after a selectable number of hours have passed. I just let it run all night. I used to put in earplugs each night, and they worked to reduce outside noise to an acceptable level, but after 6 hours I'd wake up with my ears itching. I was getting concerned that using earplugs every night was not doing my ear hygiene any good, so I went looking for a noise generator. This one was recommended in a technical article I read and it has worked out perfectly.

If there were a 6-Star rating I'd give it- and I'm going to be very granular in my review as people who need white noise to sleep usually know exactly what they need and are looking for- and what they are not: Some people just need a background/white noise to gently help them fall asleep. Others, like myself, have over-active hearing and minds that take forever to settle down at night - where any sound, big or small, can trigger us out of drifting off. I think I'm on the extreme high-end of this. I've done large box fans (can't take them with you everywhere and you wake up with cotton-mouth and dry eyes), and for the last 2 years I tried different apps on my phone (none were loud enough and all had pattern cycles your brain would pick up on fast enough that don't let your mind shut down. And, I found running an app on my phone all night posed other problems on running down the battery down even when plugged in all night (I did finally find a decent app but the sound coming off a phone it was still not natural enough somehow it was weird). My mother was a flight attendant. Why is that relevant? She flew pregnant with me until she was 7 mos - and so I heard alot of jet engines before I was born. My mom used to brag that she could vacuum under my crib and I wouldn't wake up (which is true), but that she never also understood why the slightest clink of a glass in the kitchen would wake me up in a panic. I've been this way as long as I can remember -- loud, droning sounds and machines with a contant sound or rhythm will put me to sleep in minutes. On a plane I'm out before take-off. But the slightest random sound wakes my brain up, as do irregular patterns of sounds. Anyone like me knows there is nothing more soothing than the sound of a loud dishwasher going in rhythm, or a furnace working away. I also have mild tinnitus - so it's also tricky to found a sound that will cover that up in your head to just the right degree. Anyone with me so far, has probably tried everything and you eventually just make-do with something that half-works, like my phone app did. Along with the LectroFan I also got the Marpac DOHM-DS Sound Machine (wrote a separate review on it- it was far too quiet for me and not the right type of sound, though a pleasant sound). I tried the Marpac first and disappointed by it, didn't have high hopes for the LectroFan. I turned it on, and it was like Christmas for Grown-Ups... 10 different types of fan sounds, and 10 different types of white-noise sounds varying in pitch. Seriously, this was like Christmas for the sleep-deprived who crave a solution for a full night's sleep. I ran through the different sounds back and forth, amazed at how they were all unique but similar variations on both fan types and white noise - 10 of each type! My only initial disappointment, which quickly faded, was that the volume was decent compared most things I've tried--- then I realized the volume was only mid-way.... For a guy who couldn't really find anything that was 'loud enough' to block out the other sounds - I found that on some of the fan/white noise variations I actually had to turn it down from full volume. Anyone who's gone through what I have my whole life trying to get to sleep and even sleep 3-4 hours at a time will understand when I say I almost got a bit emotional at the relief-potential I realized the LectroFan has. Honestly- the hard part will be trying the different fan/white noise sounds to find which I like best (having so choices, along, is mind-boggling). These are not fake, pre-recorded, twangy sounding- these sound like the real things. I am actually excited to go to bed tonight, instead of dreading wondering what sounds will bug me and get my brain going again, or how long it will take to try and sleep, how long I'll be able to stay asleep or how exhausted I may wake up. I'm trying "Duct Fan" tonight and I'll have to put it about 3 steps down from the loudest setting (which, again, is awesome that I found something that can go louder than I even needed). I should add, the low-end of the volume spectrum on this would be fine for babies, even. Size-wise, think about a stack of drink coasters. Not huge, not small - move something to another nightstand and make the room. It's also easily portable for travel. It's not pretty, it's not ugly. I am surprised they haven't gone the extra step of adding a clock/alarm to it, because it would be a great 2-in-1. I'm making a point to write this right after trying it out, because for anyone who's been as miserable as I have for so long, I'm hoping this helps them out, as well. I will most likely add updates after using it through the night a week or two, as well. Good night!

I'm one of those light sleepers who always used a fan to drown out background noise. I'm also one of those kinds who can "hear every little thing", which means fans rarely last more than a year (if that) before the motors start to whine, eventually leading to long nights of lots of whining and little sleep on my part. After perusing the "sleep fans", I was unimpressed by their overall performance. Nothing in stores today has a fan motor without some whine to it (which eventually becomes a howl and I don't need Banshees in my room at night, thanks), and living as close as I do to a freeway, well, let's just say I'm ready to start initiatives to ban motorcycles and after market "mufflers" for young, stupid wannabe racing enthusiasts. So, in desperation, I turned to sound machines. I tried the mechanical ones that use a fan to replicate the "white noise" of a fan. It whined. I mean, really? So it went back and I despaired of a cost-effective solution to my whine-inspired insomnia. Drinking had next day drawback, pills aren't my thing (and had even worse next day drawbacks, and both were more expensive in the long run), so eventually I came across this. I reviewed the video and although volumes weren't easy to ascertain, I decided that I'd give it a try. I haven't slept better in years. It took several nights to find my "sound", which isn't the machine's fault. I tried all of the "fan" noises, but sadly, my brain played tricks on me and I heard a whine from it (My wife didn't, it was all in my head), but since it was a whine that kept me awake, I opted for the white-noise sounds and within a week I found one I could live with. As it happened, I'm thriving with it now. I have it sitting on my headboard, about six inches from my head on the lowest volume and its surprisingly rich sound drowns out virtually everything short of gunfire (which, to be honest, isn't much of an issue where I live). Even the fans didn't mask the sound of the garbage trucks. But this does. It handles low-pitched or lesser volume, high pitched sounds as if they aren't there. Back-up warning sounds, it could do better, but the fan wouldn't have been better. Compared to a box fan (my previous go-to) it is absolutely outstanding. It's consistent, it doesn't have any repetitive or looped sounds, no breaks, and it does the job better than any fan I've ever owned. It's also amazingly small for what it does. My wife thought I had put a monster stereo speaker under the bed. If I want more volume, I can turn it up to "earthquake", which is to say the lowest volume is more than adequate for my needs. The controls are positioned a bit awkwardly if you want it on its side (which works better for me) and it's sometimes amusing to figure out which button does what in the dark, but it will remember both the volume and setting even if it comes unplugged. Best of all, it's tiny size makes for ease of portability, which means when I travel, I can have it with me to get a good night's sleep away from home, too. I've used fans for 35+ years. I'll never go back to them again. If anyone needs a use fan (cheap, you pay shipping), I can swing a deal for you. In the meantime, I'm catching up on sleep after a few decades of bad sleeping episodes. [ Update 06/05/2023: My little sound machine is trucking along without a hitch. There is NOTHING to change in the review, and this thing has saved my sanity, and possibly my marriage. I bought it in January of 2016, and 7 years later, it's going and going and going. If noise is an issue in your sleeping environment, this is far more reliable, and far longer lasting, than any fan or other mechanical sound-maker. There are few things in life that I gush about, but this is one of them, and I recommend it without hesitation or reservation. ]

This is a product worth buying and the company stands behind its product and warranty. I've been using these for the past seven months at home and work since I saw a colleague using these in her therapy practice. I have shared these little gems with my other colleagues. The Lectrofan far surpasses the Dohm (by Marpak) in every way and in multiple settings. The Lectrofan blocks out unwanted and annoying noises while it also protects privacy. There are a variety of settings from numerous different fan sounds, white noise, an auto shut off after an hour, and enough volume settings that you will find the perfect fit for what you need. The USB cord end can be plugged into the wall charger or into any USB port. As a Marriage and Family Therapist, privacy is crucial. I use the Lectrofan at work to keep my clients' sessions completely confidential. My clients feel safe to share, because they know their privacy is secure in every way. My clients and I have tested it out by having them listen outside the office door while I raised my voice inside near the door and vice-versa. It's nothing short of amazing. Neither of us heard anything but muffled noise and could not make out the words. No need to spend an exorbitant amount of money on sound panels for my walls. At home, it is fantastic for blocking out noise for my young child's room when he is in bed and the rest of the household is awake. He likes to have his door open to let some light in his room and the Lectrofan in his room blocks the noise. On the Fourth of July, it blocked the firework noise and even blunted the sound of the ones going off right behind our back yard. The best part was that when I had trouble with one of them not working, I received the best customer service I've experienced in years! A representative from the company was in contact with me in less than an hour to resolve the issue. They took the time to troubleshoot with me and provided kind and knowledgeable customer service. They took care of the issue immediately. I have never written a review this long before, but I've also never been so satisfied with a product and the customer service. I will continue to recommend these to friends, family, and my colleagues in the mental health field.

I am going to base this review against the Marpac Dohm white noise machine. I have been using a Marpac Dohm white noise machine for over ten years. It is still working just fine, but noticed one night when we weren't also running a fan that that it didn't seem to sound as loud as it used to. It still works great, but I was looking for something to be a bit louder. I was looking around for another fan but my searches also led me to look up other white noise machines. Enter LectroFan... now I'm leery of electronically generated sounds, I can always hear the loop and then I spend all night concentrating on when the loop happens.But LectroFan uses some sort of algorithm to mask the sounds so they sound natural. Normally I'd be skeptical, but saw many reviews touting its performances and how they'll never sleep without it and that it masks the loudest distractions. Listed below are comparisons between the Marpac Dohm and LectroFan: Size - It is smaller in circumference and height. They sell a mini version for travel, but you could easily use this for travelling too. Power - LectroFan uses a USB port for power. It comes with an adapter for the wall, but you can also use a USB port to power it from your computer. Marpac is a standard wall outlet. Again, this option may be good for travelers and provides more options for power. Sound generation - LectroFan uses electronic sounds with computer algorithms to keep sounds from sounding looped. Marpac uses a mechanical fan in an enclosure with holes that can be opened or closed to cause the volume and pitch to vary. Choices - LectroFan gives you 20 total sound choices. 10 varying types of fan sounds (that actually sound like real fans) and 10 types of white noise (that vary in pitch from low to high). Marpac gives you a varying range of pitch by adjusting the baffles along the side and volume can be controlled by way of baffles along top and a power toggle switch in low and high speed. Volume - LectroFan can get quite a bit louder than Marpac by my observation. Additionally, the speaker for LectroFan is located at the top of the unit which focuses the sound waves to the ceiling to be reflected off of. The Marpac emits sound from both top and sides but is more spread out exiting the unit. Overall, I'm very happy with this purchase. I'm still trying to find the "right" sound for sleeping, but right now I tend to use the lower pitch white noise at somewhat louder level than what I find possible with the Marpac. The bass response seems to be quite noticeable as well.

Tired of hearing the loud music my neighbor in the house next door plays at all hours, I did a little digging on sound machines available on Amazon. Going to sleep with a small fan has worked for me before, but sometimes it’s too loud and I’m also sensitive to every little repetitive noise or variation the motor makes. So sometimes it can end up keeping me awake. Plus I detest air blowing around the room. So I decided I needed a sound machine. I’ve been using this machine for just over a week and so far am happy with it. It’s a small compact design and doesn’t take up too much real estate in the room. It can get very loud but I usually use it on a softer volume so it just creates a subtle hum. I can still hear traffic going by but it drowns out all music, TVs, and people’s voices, which are the sounds I find most distracting. I feel my sleep has improved greatly and I wake up less frequently throughout the night. The first few nights I used it, I started with a softer volume. Then gradually increased it on the following nights. It has ten different fan sound options to choose from (and white noise at different pitches, which I haven’t used). The fan sounds do sound somewhat more muffled/digital than a real fan, but this hasn’t been an issue. Also, there is a timer (that I haven’t used) but I let my machine run all night. Overall definitely recommend this machine!

Like most others who buy sound machines, I'm a light, fan sleeper and I'm surrounded by neighborhood kids, barking puppy dogs, and crowing roosters. I didn't know sound machines existed for years, so every winter I pretty much freeze my butt off with the use of a fan at night. I discovered the sound machine on Amazon about 2 years ago and saw that Marpac has the lead seller in this area. So last winter, I bought one at a local department store, tried it, and was tragically underwhelmed. It went right back to the store where I paid $50 for it. It was no louder than a small desktop table fan. I could hear my visiting sister pop the top on a soda can in the guest room across the hall. I just couldn't stand the thought that I had paid so much for something so useless, so I took it back and am still wondering what all the hype was about. Here we are in the middle of yet another winter, so I decided to give a sound machine another try. Kind of tired of running a flipping fan in the middle of 30 degree weather. I got back on Amazon and typed in sound machine. This time I didn't look for hype. I used my own deductive reasoning. The Lectrofan seemed to have a solid reputation, but above all else, it has several different sounds and an impressive volume control. And NO LOOP. I took a chance and thought, wow. I'm going to be livid if I've just spent yet another $50 bucks on a useless sleep machine. Turns out, it's beyond awesome. I have absolutely no idea why the Marpac has twice as many reviews and followers on Amazon as this machine, because the LectroFan is obviously the superior machine. It is MUCH louder and FAR more extensive in range of ability. What's even better? It's about a fourth the size of its competitor and is hardly even noticeable as just another small electronic on your nightstand or dresser. Seriously, when I saw the box it arrived in, I was thinking you have to be kidding. It's tiny, but it packs a punch. I don't have an outlet near my dresser so I placed mine on my nightstand and I think it works perfectly where I have it. Especially with the ability to turn the volume up and down, I don't have to worry about it being too loud right next to my head. I slept like a baby last night with this thing. If you're in the market for a sound machine and happen to see this review in the sea of over 3,000 others, listen to me. Skip the Marpac and pick this one. It's just a better machine.
