Description

The D3V is a fully active desktop monitoring system designed for songwriters, producers, and music lovers who want to enjoy ADAM Audio sound quality as conveniently as possible. Available in white or black editions, the active monitors feature the iconic golden ribbon tweeter and stay true to ADAM Audio’s German industrial design heritage. Each active pair features 3.5” aluminum woofers and ferrite magnet system driven by 80 W amplifiers. The woofers are further complemented by dual-sided 3.5” passive radiators which allow the D3V to extend as low as 45 Hz. With 25 years’ experience working with ribbon tweeter technology, ADAM Audio has created a compact 1.5” D-ART (Desktop Accelerated Ribbon Tweeter) so D3V customers can enjoy the precise and unfatiguing high-frequency reproduction that their established monitoring systems are known for. The D3V features a USB-C input which means the monitoring system behaves as a digital output device when connected to a computer and negates the need for an additional audio interface for playback. This plug’n’play functionality extends to mobile devices so high-quality audio can be enjoyed without the compression or conversion normally associated with such connections. The D3V also features balanced ¼" TRS inputs for more traditional analogue audio applications. The backplate of the left speaker features a range of user-friendly switches to address the common acoustical issues arising from speaker placement, while the front panel includes a headphone socket and volume knob that doubles as a control for the audio input selection, muting and other functions. The D3V comes complete with detachable monitor stands that are angled at 15° toward the users’ ears. Additionally, there is a standard threaded 3/8” hole for microphone stand mounting on the underside of both monitors.

  • Amazing Bass, High-End Detail and 3D Soundstage in a Tiny Speaker!
Style: D3V White
Astoundingly loud and detailed for being so tiny! The bass that comes out of these little things is hard to believe! The stereo field is very 3D. What you have to realize is that EACH speaker actually has 4 drivers - a ribbon tweeter, a woofer and 2 bass radiators (one on each side). That's EIGHT total drivers you get in just 2 tiny little speakers you can fit in a small backpack. Sure, they don't have Bluetooth, but these are professional audio tools, not consumer speakers. They're designed for professional music production. They're engineered to be highly accurate with a flat frequency response at very short distances. If you're looking for speakers just for casual listening and don't need reference-level reproduction and accuracy, you should get something else. These are total overkill for the average listener. That said, as mini monitors in any kind of professional or semi-pro application these things are unbeatable for the price! I have a pair of Dynaudio LYD48 speakers that cost $2,400 and while these little guys can't match them, they come surprisingly close for a tiny fraction of the price. I definitely feel comfortable producing music and mixing on them. I have them hooked up to my TV in my bedroom and it's turned what used to be just an entertainment center into a respectable audio production space. I love lying in bed with a wireless keyboard, mouse and Bluetooth MIDI controller and producing music on these things. They'd be great for a home DJ setup too. The latest firmware update allows you to disable the auto shut-off feature and solves the problem some users were experiencing with the high end being muted at low volumes. Overall I am extremely satisfied with my purchase. I'll be taking these with me when I travel. They'd be perfect for working at small desks and in hotel rooms. ... show more

  • Not Bad, but the Instructions Are Difficult to Understand
Style: D3V White
The sound itself is quite good. In terms of overall audio quality, I would put it roughly on par with the excellent speakers in a MacBook Air. However, these ADAM speakers have more of a flat, reference-monitor sound than a warm, fun, or “musical” sound. If you understand how headphones are often described as either reference-oriented or designed for enjoyable casual listening, you will know what I mean. You can use an EQ app to adjust the bass and treble if you prefer a more lively sound. My biggest complaint is the setup. For the first 30 minutes, I could not get any sound from the speakers. I am a software engineer, and after repeatedly checking everything and beginning to suspect that I had received a defective unit, I finally figured it out: you must quickly double-press the volume knob to switch the speakers into DATA/USB mode. The indicator light on the left should turn cyan or light blue. Buried in the instructions is some tiny text saying to press the volume knob. Elsewhere, another small diagram says “Press ×2.” I pressed it twice, but nothing happened and the light remained green. Eventually, using my engineering brain, I guessed that “Press ×2” actually meant a rapid double-click, like double-tapping a mouse. That finally worked. My goodness. This was one of the most unnecessarily difficult speaker setups I have encountered in the past 20 years. Is this what people mean by “German engineering”? One more thing about the speakers: whenever I shut down or turn on the laptop, they make a moderately loud “DUK” or popping sound. If I restart the laptop, the sound occurs twice: once during shutdown and again during startup. It may be a glitch or a power-handling issue, but it is definitely something that could be improved. ... show more

  • Great small reference monitors for smaller spaces
Style: D3V White
Our home studio already had a pair of Adam A5X setup with a 10 inch Adam T10S sub and we love the sound from that set up so much that when we saw that the D3V was release and came in white, we wanted them as reference monitors for our home DJ set up, we had larger alphatheta wave eights before and the small space just couldn’t handle the power of them so now that we have these space saving speakers we can stage the wave eights out more and have room behind the decks to dance. Right out of the box they sound really nice for the size while used a reference speakers, the feel and frequencies hits just right. The sound is really sweet from these, really makes you want to move. I would highly recommend them to any beginners to pro that wants small speakers with sweet punch. They were able to do this with the x-art tweeter and the 3inch driver on each speaker paired with a passive radiators on each side of the speaker a feature in which you find in most high end Bluetooth speakers. During most dj sessions with my partner we pair these speakers with a 10 Adam sub from our desk and together they sound alike a $2k+ studio system, it’s so awesome and for a quarter of the price. The build is pretty nice, the plastic housing is thick and though because I have accident knock these off the table without any repercussions other then small minor dents or scratches. Come with nice angled up stands. A little mediocre that the speaker only has one input of TSR on it but there’s so many input adaptors out there to fit your need. Having a control knob on one side is nice, the other speaker will be connected by a 4-pin audio cable. The power cord and brick is pretty longer the package was very nice and recycle martial which is always plus these days. They functionality and price of these are for anyone looking for great compact sounding speakers for music making or just plane listening. ... show more

  • Awesome sauce
Style: D3V White
I don't usually leave product feedback but these are actually insane If you close your eyes you might think you're sitting in front of a pair of HS8s or something. They sound fantastic with awesome volume and strong bass. I'm probably not gonna bother with a sub. Perfect for desk units Cons: The auto power off is slightly annoying BUT CAN BE DISABLED The volume curve on the front dial is a bit wonky it's a bit too quiet then it's too loud. I'd have some sort of volume control on the device. My keyboard has a nice wheel ... show more

  • Great monitors for most people
Style: D3V White
I love these things. Tested them out a bit by playing a couple old mixes of mine. The mix I knew was not great sounded terrible, but the mix I knew was good, sounded good. That’s exactly what I want. I bought these to fill in for my rockit 8s because they were way too big for my new smaller space. I’ve seen a few complaints about them not being loud enough, but I completely disagree. At unity level out on my master, i have d3v’s at about 35% before they become obnoxiously loud. Did not test usb input, and I probably won’t, because I don’t need it for my situation. ... show more

  • I made a mistake getting these

Disappointed with the sound at the low volume I need. They just quit working but are not missed!

  • High quality, amazing sound, annoying quirk…
Style: D3V White
Amazing, but for the short cord that connects the speakers…(would have given them 5* (cord not long enough to use cable management solutions to make it look clean on a desk with triple monitors). Stereo imaging is fantastic, even at low volume. Has an annoying ‘pop’ wen computer powered off or reset (as when updated) if you don’t turn them off first (as recommended by manufacturer). Recommended. ... show more

  • Great value for money. Enclosure still vibrates.
Style: D3V White
Great value for money as entry-level monitors but not more that (see Erin's Audio Corner review). Good balance of size and performance. Plastic type enclosure vibrations are slight but noticeable which will degrade the sound.
