I bought this as a backup pump and I a glad I did, I have a new sump pump and we just had a very bad amount of rain. I ended up putting this pump also in my sump pump hole and it pumped beautifully for 7 straight days. I use this for a homemade pool heater. I have an in ground pool in New England so our pool season can be very short without a heated pool. I bought this pump & 2 black garden hoses & some landscape cloth. The pump sucks the water out of the deep end, runs it through the hoses while sitting on the black landscape cloth for extra heat, and drops it back into the pool. I use this pump to suction seawater into a huge above-ground pool that I use for holding marine fish. The pump is lowered from a seawall and pumps water up about 10 feet at a ridulous volume. The turnover rate for this large pool is about once per hour, keeping fresh oxygenated water at high levels constantly. The float switch is an added benefit.     • Won't work in shallow water

The automatic float switch on this needs to be above the pump itself. The pump is over a foot tall. This means that in order for this thing to work, the body of water you put it in needs to be deeper than the pump. It also means that it won't completely drain that body of water. Once the water level gets to the top of the pump, the float switch is no longer at the height/angle it needs to be in and the pump turns off. If the float switch cord was attached lower to the pump or if the cord was more flexible and longer, it might be able to function properly. I would not recommend this to anyone that needs to completely drain the body of water they're using it on. I tried to use it for a popup drain and a small fish pond and the automatic float switch was basically useless. ... show more
