When I ordered the 10''x 14.5'' Kindling Splitter I didn't read the one sentence that read the Splitter was easy to assemble. The Splitter arrives with 4 special-ended bolts so now I must figure out what size Allen wrench I need. I have a large assortment of Allen wrenches, exceeding way over 100 of them plus multiple cases of driver tips, so I would have appreciated the online instructions to provide the size. I used a driver tip size of 3/16-inch although the metric size would be better. The 10''x 14.5'' Kindling Splitter is different from some other styles with its open cradle for supporting the log. Being open, it's quicker to place the log on to the splitter but balancing the log is more difficult when there is an uneven cut on the bottom of the log. The blade isn't as sharp when compared to another kindling splitter I have and I will need to have the blade sharpened. There are 4 lag bolts to attach the splitter to a stump to have a secure work area. The well-made kindling splitter, along with its 4-pound maul, is designed to be an easier way to split kindling and is a tool that will serve a long life. Arrived as expected, with no issues noted for a comparatively heavy item. First up - Between home fireplace, fire pit out on the patio, and s'mores in any number of campsites we visit on the regular - we're always ready to start a fire! Obtaining firewood for any of these is relatively simple for us; as many stores in our area sell bundles; and so do many rural landowners. But what you usually get in those pre-packed bundles is almost entirely hardwood logs that have been quartered. Great wood to burn for all the purposes listed above. But near impossible to light without kindling (smaller wood). This splitter seems ideal for making that kindling from some of the logs. Enough heft to it feel like a multi-year tool Setup is pretty straightforward - which is good, as there were no instructions in my shipment. Simply push the handle unit into opposite holes on the base, push the splitter unit into the other pair of holes - and for light work, you're done! There are some small set-screws provided which are for locking in the splitter unit to the base with an appropriate Allen wrench to do so. There are also additional bolts to attach the base to something solid, such as a stump if that fits your need. Either or both of these steps will improve the stability of your unit while you're cracking logs with the provided hammer (3.94 pounds by my trusty fish scales). Either or both may limit the portability of the tool if needed. Regardless - recommend a solid base (dry ground, stump, large flat rock) underneath the unit for use. Assembled or not, unit is a bit heavy and bulky to go into our standard RV load. But since we normally carry a few hours worth of firewood, it will be simple to make kindling beforehand. ... show more

I had three trees taken down this fall, and I've been splitting the resulting logs by hand, so I needed something to split some of the firewood into kindling. This kindling splitter works quite well for what I need it to do! It was pretty easy to put together, and came with an Allen key to tighten the four screws that hold everything in place. It felt very sturdy as I used it, and it only took me about two minutes to reduce a decent-sized piece of firewood to kindling, which I promptly used to start a fire. I'm very pleased with this splitter, and I look forward to many more cozy and warm nights courtesy of my homemade kindling! ... show more

    • Safer than an axe
Until now, I have used an axe to split wood into smaller chunks and kindling. It never felt safe, and I've damaged my garage floor because that's where I store my wood. This makes it easy to split medium-large chunks of wood into small/small-medium chunks safely. It assembles easily. The screws to hold the pieces together are not really necessary, but don't hurt anything. The only complaint I have is that the packaging was a bit weird. Everything came in plastic bags, and one of the bags was sealed with super sticky goop that got all over the place and was hard to wash off. Just cut the bags open and you'll be fine. ... show more

    • A way to split firewood with all items included
As soon as I received this I was able to put it together rather quickly and in less than 30 minutes I was able to split many larger logs into smaller pieces. This works very well, and it also provides a 5 lb mallet with a comfortable handle which allows me to break the wood without much trouble.

    • Sturdy
I'm always a bit anxious about buying no-name products when it comes to things that need to be super tough. So far this thing does not feel like a cheapo product, it is heavy and solid. Like the listing says it is only for kindling, you will not have a good time if you try to split full logs on this. For kindling, it works really nicely and the hammer they include with it is perfect. This is saving me so much time and back pain compared to splitting kindling with my full size maul, and it's even easier than using a small axe for kindling because the pieces don't fall as far away when you split and you can tap them once with the hammer to get them to stick upright on the splitter then remove your hand and give it a good whack, instead of playing "how fast are my reflexes" with your finger joints.
