Frequently asked questions

Yes, the Acer Predator Triton 17 X allows for upgrades. It comes with 64GB DDR5 RAM, but you can expand this if your work or gaming needs demand more. The same applies to the 2TB PCIe Gen 4 SSD; there's room to add more storage or replace the existing drive if you need more space or a faster drive.

Absolutely! The Triton 17 X features a WQXGA 250Hz G-SYNC display, making it excellent for gaming with smooth, tear-free visuals at high frame rates. This high resolution and refresh rate, combined with accurate colors, also make it ideal for creators who work on high-definition video editing, 3D modeling, or graphic design.

The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 GPU in the Triton 17 X is one of the most powerful graphics cards available. For gamers, it means being able to play the latest titles at the highest settings with ray tracing turned on, without compromising on frame rates. For creators, this GPU accelerates tasks like rendering, encoding, and live streaming, making it a versatile choice for any graphics-intensive application.

Killer WiFi 6E provides significant benefits over previous generations, including lower latencies, higher throughput, and more reliable connections even in crowded networks. This means smoother online gaming experiences, faster downloads, and more stable video calls, which is especially beneficial for users who demand high-performance networking for both work and play.

🚀 Abunda's Overview

This is our summary and key points to consider based on customer reviews.

The reviews reveal a laptop boasting impressive gaming and performance capabilities, with users applauding its high-quality screen, portability despite its powerful specs, and its ability to handle demanding applications and games effortlessly. However, concerns about fan noise, battery life, and occasional hardware issues like Wi-Fi/Bluetooth adapter problems and system freezes temper the enthusiasm. A particular pain point is the lack of upgradable RAM in certain models, and a significant caveat regarding quality control, with some users experiencing defective units upon delivery.

Pros

  • 🚀 Exceptional performance close to desktop gaming PCs
  • 🖥️ High-quality, vibrant OLED and Mini LED screens
  • 🎮 Can handle demanding games and local AI models with ample VRAM
  • 🌬️ Good thermal management keeping it cool during gaming
  • 💼 Portable and relatively thin for its power

Cons

  • 🔊 Loud fan noise under load
  • 🔋 Short battery life
  • 🛠️ Recurrent issues with WiFi/Bluetooth adapters; some models require hard reboots or have non-upgradable RAM
  • 🚫 Quality control issues leading to potential defects upon delivery

Should I Buy It?

If you value top-notch gaming performance and portability and can overlook the potential for loud fans and short battery life, this laptop may be an excellent choice. However, the noted quality control issues mean buyers should proceed with caution, potentially seeking coverage through warranties or return policies to mitigate risks. This laptop shines for performance-centric users, but those sensitive to noise or seeking all-day battery life might weigh alternatives.

  • Flagship gaming laptop
CPU: i9-13900HZ / RTX 4090 Style: 17" Mini LED
It does exactly what it's advertised to do... game on a level that comes close to a flagship desktop gaming PC... the screen is amazing, bright and yet embodies the great contrast of an OLED.. The only flaws are what are to be expected with such a powerful machine... loud fans and short battery life. ... show more

  • A great powerhouse of a laptop!
CPU: i9-12900H / RTX 3080Ti Style: 16" WUXGA
This thing is a surprising amount of power packed into a relatively thin frame. It can handle every game I throw at it and then some... Not to mention running some local AI models with all of thag glorious VRAM. Only caveats: the speakers are a bit weak (I use headphones normally anyways) and I've had recurrent issues with the wifi/Bluetooth adapters (nothing a quick driver reinstall can't fix even at its worst). Everything else works flawlessly! ... show more

  • Randomly freezes
CPU: i9-12900H / RTX 3080Ti Style: 16" WUXGA
Usually when using web browser with a ton tabs when researching or playing a heavily modded games for some reason sometimes it can resolve itself other times it needs a hard reboot. Also the fan can get pretty loud, even when not doing anything really. Screen color etc. is extremely crisp and vibrant, this was what I most impressed by. For 3k personally speaking, it's alright no regrets purchase wise ... show more

  • Bad Quality Control
CPU: i9-12900H / RTX 3080Ti Style: 16" WUXGA
Please be aware that you are likely to get a damage or broken new $3k computer like I did. For the price of the computer you would expect the build quality to be higher. The power plug looked weird like it was out of place. It was hard to plug into the power brick, which was a bad sign. Only the power brick was connected on the computer with only one place to plug it in. Turns out it won’t power on or charge despite being plugged in for hours (know good power outlet, tested with other devices with no issues). No lights on the computer either. I guess quality has gone down hill with the Predator line and the computer was returned the same day through Amazon. Buyer beware bad quality. Other posts seem to say it gets too hot, some others bad screens, others bad motherboard. It’s clearly a trend. So good luck if you order this. ... show more

CPU: i7-13700H / RTX 4050 Style: 14" WUXGA
Had this laptop a little over a week and it's impressive how small and portable it is while keeping temp on certain more demanding games, you can't go wrong on this if you find it on sale

  • Got it on sale, a perfect device for Comp Sci major.
CPU: i7-13700H / RTX 4070 Style: 14" Mini LED
really really wish it had upgradable ram because 16Gb is just not enough but for a 14" device it's been outstanding.

  • 17 Month Update; Cannot recommend
CPU: i9-12900H / RTX 3080Ti Style: 16" WUXGA
Second update, 11/11/23 (purchased June 2022): You can see from my earlier review that the laptop had to be returned once soon after purchase because the graphics card didn't work. Acer said they replaced the main board. Kudos to them for fixing the product, but it took two weeks along with my time and effort to get it shipped out, etc. FFWD to today, and it looks like the SSD has failed and the laptop is out of warranty. Now I'm on the hook for replacing it out of pocket, along with the added frustration of reinstalling the OS, all of my apps, etc. Long story short, the machine specs out nicely and the price was lower than a comparable Alienware laptop, but Acer's component QC leaves a lot to be desired, IMO. Oh, and something else I missed in my initial reviews... The display adapter doesn't work through the USB3-C ports. Basically, you can't utilize the high end graphics card through a docking station. You have to plug an HDMI cable directly into the laptop's port. Kind of a pain if you want to use external monitors. I am going to just buy a new laptop from a better brand and hand this Acer down to my son after I replace the SSD. Pity. I received the laptop back after a two week turnaround, from the time I dropped it off with FedEx to when I got it back two days ago. According to the repair order, they had to replace the entire main board, probably due to the NVIDIA GPU being faulty. The machine is working flawlessly (hope I'm not jinxing myself) so I will give it 4 stars, knocking 1 off because of Acer's poor initial QC and the relative hassle of being without my computer for two weeks. Original review: I will update this review depending on how the repair process goes. I ordered the laptop on Prime Day and received it a few days later. I spent about a week getting it all set up. Launched a game and the frame rate was like a PowerPoint presentation. Weird... I looked in the Device Manager and the NVIDIA RTX 3080 Ti (a VERY expensive component of this very expensive laptop) wasn't working. After troubleshooting with no luck, I contacted Acer support via their chat feature. After telling the CS rep what steps I'd taken, they told me to send it back for repair. Hopefully I'll get it back in 10-15 days. So, for now - Acer gets 1 star from me. Whether that changes and how much will depend on them. ... show more
